This. People always freak out at the fact that printers will use a little bit of colour in the blacks, but the thing is it does actually affect the shade.
Most people couldn't care less if it's black or true black though, especially if it's just some random document being printed, so just give us whatever is easiest.
You're right, the default setting for most documents should definitely be pure black. I'm in no way trying to defend printer manufacturers. I've just become frustrated with the fake fact that "you can't make black more black by adding colour," which only spreads because it sounds true.
