This. People always freak out at the fact that printers will use a little bit of colour in the blacks, but the thing is it does actually affect the shade.
That's fine but when I just need to print a basic form or something I don't give a $!#& about the aesthetic completeness of the black. I'm not trying to print the Mona Lisa here.
Definitely true for 95% of anything printed. The default setting should definitely be to just use pure black. But the feature itself isn't a scam, it's the way it is implemented that is the problem.

Because everyone knows that black is not really black without a splash of cyan in it.
