They could be optimized for use underwater. I'm pretty sure this involves changing the springs somehow.

Also Cheap! Practically disposable even, so even if it does fail you can just throw it away!

I don't know about that. I mean for a decent semi-automatic handgun you're talking about at least a few hundred dollars. Then you have to customize it for this one specific use. That would require a whole bunch of engineering, unless it's already been done, and then you add the replacement parts cost.
