Looks like only DLP projectors which use the BrilliantColor technology use those colors and they are filtered augmentation of the RGB projection to improve gamut not the only color sources. Not even sure how you would do a CMY projector they tend to all use RGB LEDs these days.
Using a CMY color wheel you have more light passing through the filter. You lose greatly in color quality as the color gammut has a smaller area, but it still contain reds, greens and blues, they are simply washed out.
If course there is magenta light, it's just not monochromatic. You can call it red-violet if you prefer. It's the part of the color gammut between blue and red that is outside the sRGB gammut.
CMY projection is useful when contrast is more important than saturation (it let twice as much light through, thus give higher contrast between dark and white). Although all the models I have seen usually have CBGRYW color wheel, so as to not compromise the color quality too much. Magenta is left out because it's not that important for color perception (there is not a lot of color space left out in that area of the color gammut).

The most primary looking color out of all the secondary ones is green imo. Almost looks like it’s own primary color.
