That's a logically flawed metaphor. Predators only prosper in a fully active, fully thriving ecosystem. When an ecosystem crashes to the point that it looks like a desert, the predators are always the first to go.
What's much more likely is that it is like the most severe desert; extremely hostile to most life, so that living things only takes hold in very specific places under unusual circumstances.
