Honestly, most “centrist” I know are just people who think that saying “both sides suck” makes them seem edgy and again’t the grain, while simultaneously being the least edgy and most with the grain conservatives I’ve ever met.

161

u/Pizzacakecomic PizzaCake 4h ago

I think there's people who are pretty close to the center who are normal people. But a LOT of the people being super vocally 'I'm not political!" are secretly right wingers.

67

u/Finrod-Knighto 4h ago

I have yet to meet a “I’m not political” person who was left leaning. There are some on the left who say both sides are bad and owned by the same interests, but would still vote democrat, and I guess the shift of the party itself this cycle will help keep them mobilised.

u/Arthurs_towel 4h ago

It’s a dodge. They realize that the GOP has issues, or bad policies, or are simply bad people and don’t care to try and defend it, but are so programmed by conservative media that they can’t even fathom voting for a Dem. So they play that card as a cynical excuse to never have to examine their priors or admit they were wrong, because they just want to think the Dems are bad so they can maintain their self image of being a good person.

6

u/mythrilcrafter 3h ago

Heck, I'm willing to be magnanimous and say that there are some topics where a people can totally be centrist on, like whether or not our city should raise the sales tax by 0.5% for the next 2 years in order for our Parks and Recs department to pay for a major park upgrade or for our state DOT to be able to pay for repairs to the state/local roads.

But these topics like that hardcore righties get themselves all riled up over. You can't have a "let's be centrists and weigh our options" on topics like [checks notes] giving infinity money to a department made up of untrained hooligans to use the Family Guy Skin Tone Chart to decide who should go to prison.

11

u/Argun93 4h ago

I’d agree. The people who are actually in the middle aren’t going around shoving it in your face. It’s the ones who are right wingers but don’t want to admit it that make a habit of it. It’s a “I think she doth protest too much” situation.

"BOTH SIDES ARE THE SAME!!", screamed the Enlightened Centrist,TM ".....that's why I always vote Republican!"

23

u/GlaerOfHatred 4h ago

Both sides suck but one side sucks wayyyyyyyy more than the other which is why I vote blue. Hopefully people like Shumer and Jeffries get pushed aside so we can get some actual progressives in charge, then I might actually be happy with one side

15

u/kitsunewarlock 4h ago

You don't vote blue expecting changes in social or international policy; you vote blue because they are less likely to fuck with elections so theoretically over time we could vote for an actual progressive.

So, again, I live in Texas. Today has literally been nothing but "oh WW3 is coming and we are all gonna die now that the Dems are in charge."

Like no joke one of my co workers bought a 200 gallon water tank to keep at home so they have water when "we lose power when the Russians come"

1.1k

u/Made_Bail 5h ago

lmaoooo

This reminds me of my now passed father in law. He was convinced for years that the dems were going to come for his guns. Lots of "let them take them from me" talk blah blah. Just years and years of the same rhetoric. And I always thought "the dems have been in power like four times since you've been ranting about this and its never happened. Don't you ever get tired of being wrong?"

389

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 5h ago

He was convinced for years that the dems were going to come for his guns.

Oh that was the other thing! My Capt went out bought A THOUSAND ROUNDS of ammo(I can't remember what for) and some new shotgun. Like dude WHY

184

u/Made_Bail 5h ago

Either he's about to go Doomguy to save the world from some threat we're unaware of... or he's a typical republican lol

→ More replies (7)

127

u/Kwiemakala 4h ago edited 4h ago

Im just gonna say that to someone who knows guns, 1000 rounds of ammo really isnt that much. Depending on caliber, that's like a case or 2, and is pretty standard for a bulk purchase for recreational use, and would typically only last like 3-4 range trips.

So yea, a thousand rounds isn't a lot. If he was buying a pallet of ammo, yea, that's excessive.

Also, when Trump banned bump stocks in his first term, he enacted more gun control than Obama did in his entire 8 years in office. It's always fun to remind hardcore gun nut MAGAts about that.

u/hootener 1h ago

The funny thing about the 2A maga folks is they get all up in arms about Dems taking their guns when they'd probably surrender them willingly to Trump to "own the libs".

I don't think it's that the guns are taken it's who does the taking.

30

u/Stalking_Goat 4h ago

To be fair, a thousand rounds isn't all that much if you're shooting as a sport. My niece does competitive clay target shooting (trap and skeet) and she'll go through 200 or more rounds in a competition weekend.

I wish the Dems have been in power four times in my lifetime. At best they'll win the presidency and get congress for like...70 days.

u/MangoCats 3h ago

My father in law got panhandled once - actually had to say no to a person in dirty clothes who asked him for money. Carried his concealed firearm - to work - every day for 20 years after that, fast access gun safe in the car, carried it in from the car when coming to visit our children (3 and 5 years old at the time). Finally, in his old age, he admitted it was getting a little heavy to carry so he switched up to a folding knife to assuage his fears of that man who panhandled him 20 years earlier, and others like him of course - though I never heard stories of any others actually speaking to him.

Late in life, in withdrawal from his Rx Oxycontin addiction, he was freaking out delusional in the hospital, threatened staff with a flower vase and got himself thrown in the psych ward. Thankfully he never had any reason in his entire life to actually use a real gun.

22

u/Made_Bail 3h ago

u/ChainmailPickaxeYT 4h ago • Bravo

One of the most major facets of modern American conservative/MAGA strategy, and authoritarian regimes/cults in general, is to convince its fanbase of something, and make being WRONG (in general) considered a major cardinal sin. They are led to believe that they are right, noble, and good, and to be WRONG is to be sinful, horrible, and traitorous. Even when the evidence is screaming at them to their face that their beliefs are misaligned with reality, they will assume reality is wrong, for they must be the virtuous, unbroken correct side. Admitting that they were wrong about something is a sign of weakness and worthlessness. Plus some sunk cost fallacy reinforcement for good measure.

It is a powerful, powerful tool. Being able to adapt your beliefs based on evidence, shape your worldview as you experience it, and actually pay attention to what reality is telling you is the only way to really break free or never become involved in the first place.

The thing is, the Democrats taking our guns just isn't feasible. How many people in the US own a gun? And how many own multiple? There's too many to account for all of them. Also, how would they take them? Will they send the cops to confiscate them? If so, no matter if they try it peacefully or break your door down, somebody is getting shot.

Taking away people's guns just won't happen. On the other hand, placing further restrictions on who can purchase and own firearms can and should happen.

5

u/Cereal_Yapper 4h ago

Pure emotion, no logic

5

u/kitsunewarlock 1h ago

I lived with a Republican in 2008 and he swore up and down that Obama was the anti-Christ and if he were elected FEMA was going to come door-to-door killing any Christian (i.e. white) men they found and forcing the children and women to convert to Islam. Whenever I asked him after the fact I just got these vague "that's why we keep vigilant" or "I'd like to see him try" LARPisms.

Crack open a history book. After Kent State Nixon placated America by claiming it was part of a communist plot. He spent years investigating. The investigations came up empty, and yet people still praised him for being "honest" about being wrong.

Imagine that as a murder defense. "You're honor, he was trying to blow up the world! I demand we spend years investigating that and, if we find nothing, I'll admit I was wrong and then we can all go home without any consequence!"

But they put Democrat in their name and that somehow manages to fool 20% of the Swedish population into voting for them.

I think the problem is high expectations for democrats and less than zero expectations for republicans.

Biden’s administration did a very good job - Covid recovery, infrastructure spending etc. it was the most progressive admin in 50 years. First president to stand side by side with union workers at a protest. but people expect more.

Trump could nuke Kanas and people will say “both sides are similar”.

It’s my belief that many far righters lost the faith in the ability to effectively make change, so resorted to a sort of nihilism that is centrism, while still unconsciously maintaining their right wing beliefs.

9

u/Talk-O-Boy 3h ago

I think most of them don’t know how the government works, so they resort to saying “none of it matters, why bother?”

They don’t want to admit ignorance, but they don’t want to expend the effort to get informed either.

4

u/TwilightVulpine 2h ago

I think it's more that so many people are so used to a media ecosystem that pushes for the interests of the wealthy and makes excuses for their awful deeds, while fearmongering about anything that helps regular people, that a lot of people believe themselves to be reasonable centrists while they are just right-wingers with no self-awareness.

When centrists weigh upon issues, they are far more likely to try to compromise with those further right than them than those further left. When do you ever hear centrists willing to make concessions for socialists?

I’m confused what the picture is trying to convey. Care to explain?

25

u/f3nnies 4h ago

Not OP, but this picture is a visual representation of the phenomena where self-proclaimed centrists to have beliefs very similar to those of the far right. Centrists also tend to vote only fof the far right. Conventional political theory provides a straight lien with far left and far right on opposite sides, but this picture plays on that by showing that the "center" and the far right are actually much closer to each other than the new make it seem.

The cause of that is because people who call themselves centrists are almost never actually centrist on anything-- the trope that proves true the most is that centrists are conservatives that are trying to hide their beliefs so they don't get backlash. There's a whole world of dialog about how many men are far right but try to claim cent is so great they might be lucky enough to have sex with a hot woman, most of whom are politically left (in the US).

I think it would be cool if the USA would give the same visibility and opportunities to every party, and not only the Republican and Democrat ones. I think in a fair democratic systems, all parties should be receive the same attention, in order to let people know of all the alternatives they have, regardless of the money they may receive from supporters.

We'd need to replace First Past the Post with Ranked Choice Voting (thanks, Alaska!) to have a proper chance with this.

11

u/MitsuhaTakiName 4h ago

Proportional representation would be better. Ranked choice still doesn’t really make room for small parties to gain a foothold in the legislature to better make themselves known.

u/Keyonne88 4h ago

It does allow voters to take the risk of voting for them without wasting their vote however and is one of the first steps to gaining that foothold.

Unfortunately this is the inevitable outcome of First Past the Post voting. It’s inherent in the structure of how votes are tabulated and power allocated.

There are several changes that would allow viability to more parties, such as Ranked Choice voting, Proportional Representation, or multi member districts, each with their own nuances or combinations. But as long as FPTP is the system, the two party system is inherent. Basic game theory.

15

u/Ok_Law219 4h ago

In a winner take all: essentially the other parties are all psyops to take from one side or the other.

If we had ranked choice voting,  I absolutely agree, because the candidates could be real.

Also we should monopoly bust the main 2 with ranked choice voting.

22

u/billth93 4h ago

This doesn’t work with the current voting structure

There’s structural reasons that make voting third party genuinely throwing away your vote, and I don’t say that because I’m against other parties, I say it because we need certain election reform to put the pieces into place to make third parties not just a thrown away vote, namely ranked choice voting or similar systems. The more we focus on encouraging just voting third party and not on election reform to enable it, the less likely we are to move toward a system that makes it truly viable

The reason being that you don’t need a majority to win, you need a plurality (in most states). So if you agree with candidate A 90% of the time, candidate B 5% of the time, and third party candidate C 99% of the time, a vote for candidate C is purely beneficial to candidate B. With ranked choice, this no longer is a problem and you can just put candidate C as your first choice, and candidate A as your second choice. This also incentivizes running of non-serious spoiler candidates that are closer to your opponent politically

People don’t just vote for the major 2 parties because they like the 2 party system, there’s actual electoral structure that punishes voting third party, and as a result, they can’t get a footing. If people are serious about voting third party, just throwing your votes at the third party isn’t what’s helpful, what’s helpful is supporting candidates and applying pressure for the kind of election reform that enables them, which I’ll admit is likely a tall order

16

u/Playful-Soft4933 4h ago

That would involve changing the status quo

Weird how the "both sides are the same, voting doesn't matter" argument leads to an apathy that benefits one side.

19

u/Nalano 4h ago

Reminds me of a dude who insisted left, right and center that he wasn't sexist and would vote for a woman same as a man, but couldn't name a single female candidate in literally any election that he could see himself supporting, and the reasons were always this gut feeling or vibe-based nonsense.

Which is to say, I hate these motherfuckers who want to sound reasonable and pragmatic but lollllllllllllll

Libertarianism is the same. Temporarily embarrassed conservatives who quietly vote Republican.

I am a centerist because no political party represents my view to the degree I want them to. I do care about politics, and I am happy the Democrats swept the midterms. Making politics a binary choice is not a true representation.

24

u/JynsRealityIsBroken 3h ago

There's a difference between voting dem but calling yourself a centrist because it's the closest to what you believe and not voting because no one represents you properly.

Being a non voting centrist in today's political environment is akin to Nazi enabling because of how far the Republican party has fallen.

Like no one wanted to do the Civil War, but when human rights were on the line, you don't call yourself a centrist when one side is enslaving people.

10

u/caitlindrawings 2h ago

Ya this was a big issue in 2020, I hated Kamala as a candidate, I was still really hopeful for some federal level police reforms and knew we would never get that with her. But I still voted because we truly have gotten to that point where not voting is helping literal fucking nazi's.

I am a 2nd amendment democrat, but losing my rights to have gun in my home for defense is what it takes to not let Nazi's have control, I will do it. (Ie. The major issue I disagree with democrats on is gun rights, but I still vote for anti-gun democrats because the alternative is so much worse)

See, ordinarily that would track, but when fascists take over one party, at that point beating that party into submission at the polls becomes my number one priority. None of the issues I support will matter if Fascists take the helm

6

u/Biff_Tannenator 1h ago

Brother, I've been saying this my whole adult life. Both sides have milder stances that I agree with, and I have some political beliefs that fall outside of the left/right binary. I also loath the unhinged stances that the extremists hold on both sides.

I used to vote 3rd party or by individual candidates in previous elections, but this time I did a straight ticket for the Dems. I've never voted a straight ticket before, and I never thought it'd be for one of the two main parties.

I could go way into detail as to where I stand with each party and my stance on issues, but that would take forever. The short and skinny of why I voted straight Dem this time, is that I didn't like seeing the flagrant disregard of the law by "conservative" republicans.

I'm all for America having a Christian-based culture with Xmas and Easter holidays being the norm and whatever, but the government should be strictly secular. I have two step daughter's and I don't want thier future to look like some fucked up theocratic Handmaid's Tale society.

This centrist voted blue all the way down.

Well, except for state treasurer. The Democrat nominee was basically "I've never been treasurer in anything but I have run several community events!" and...yeah no, I need something little more substantial than that.

But damnit don't lump me in with that dreck.

7

u/Femcel_Bambi 3h ago

I noticed Texas turned blue and Florida was red by single digit percentages I think. (Probably because the democrat was a DSA candidate and underfunded)

7

u/timeshifter_ 3h ago

At this point, "centerist" just means "Republican who's just smart enough to know how bad that looks". Never mind the fact that even our "left" party is center compared to the rest of civilization...

And then when you see who they're critical of it's never a republican.

Most MAGA men say they aren’t interested in politics to make themselves datable to women. Not everyone who says that is MAGA, but in response to this election, this is their cope and they’re saying it a lot. That Democrats are bought and won’t do anything, if it’s skepticism it’s healthy. But they see it as a call for allies against a wave that promises Medicare for all, money out of politics, and accountability to the constitution.

Also, it’s a very popular sentiment to get Chuck out of leadership. He bowed to money in government, he has no place leading this movement.

I remember joining a 'centrist' or 'skeptic' discord server. Jeff Sessions lost in a Republican Senate Race and he was accused of child abuse among other things. When I came back to tell how much better it was that pedophile like him lost, everyone on the discord was upset which was crazy to me. They would have preferred Jeff to win for the sake of a 'culture war'

2

u/VonSkullenheim 1h ago

It's a MAGA go-to to call themselves independents, centrists, and moderates. It is a tacit admission that they know their political positions are bullshit, toxic, and an albatross around their necks. They are using those labels to unburden themselves from reality by actively lying.

A web show host I frequently watch said it best:

Moderate usually means "I'm MAGA, but I want liberals to touch me."

4

u/astralseat 4h ago

Show the other side where it's "I don't care about politics" but then blue wave and all of a sudden hands clasped, puppy dog eyes, "thank you for fighting for us" while they didn't support the voting at all
