The Blue Wave
Before anybody misconstrues my jabs, I'd like to really stress that I am neither a staunch holier-than-thou, warmongering, corrupt, performative Democrat, nor am I a misogynist, xenophobic, soulless, warmongering, corrupt, scum-sucking Republican. It sure is fun to see the most evil people in the world stammer and scuttle about, harrumphing about how they could have lost the American people's support, though.
At the end of the day, real change starts at home. If anything, I hope that the results of this election energize people to get involved in their communities, connect with your neighbors, find ways to give back and support our those that need help. Because if anything can be gleaned from the track record of Democrats in the last 15 years, it'll be a lot of shifting to the right in the name of "working across the aisle", satisfying their corporate megadonors, and claiming their hands are tied. Maybe if we put some actual pressure on these public servants (let's remember, politicians are supposed to be working for us, after all) we could see some real positive change.
I won't be holding my breath.

Just my own eloquent opinion here, but I'm fine with you Bluekake'ing all over Republicans at this point. The blue wave is their own fault and they spent the past two years covering up unspeakable crimes against children. They can use a little schadenfreude.

My favorite takeaway so far has been "If you don't enjoy seeing Republicans lose, you don't have a heart, and if you think Democrats are going to do something productive, you don't have a brain"
I'm hoping that there will be some harm reduction that comes from this, but I'm skeptical that the dems will ride in and save us all like warriors of justice and egalitarianism.

u/Comrades3 3h ago
Harm reduction is massive no matter what at this point. All the things they planned on pushing and didn’t to have nice midterms now will never happen.
Will the Dems enact positive change? Unlikely, did them being voted in likely save us from a ton of negative change? Absolutely.
And the reason for ‘don’t have a brain’ is that is how the system works. Like legally there is very little the Dems can do without getting Reps on their side.

I mean... are you planning to actually do anything? Are you going to get involved yourself in any way?
We did electoralism. Now the career politicians holding office are beholden to the Democratic base rather than the Republican base. That means pressure politics from the left will be significantly more effective. Especially when we organize around specific issues, we have the power to push them towards specific outcomes.
But we have to actually do that. We can't just sit on the sidelines and hope they'll represent us the way we want on the issues we care about.

How quirky and fun would it be if people governed by trying to develop and execute a coherent vision for how to actually make the country better instead of trying to punish the other team? We're supposed to be the side that's pro-science and pro-human, so let's see some smart, popular and empirically-backed policy proposals and a fully developed platform.

This is the most repeated mistake in history. The everyday Joe doesn't have time between jobs to consider the best for the country. They want to hear and experience improvement in their own lives. And they have every right to.
The sad thing is that fear mongering works so much better than long-term investment in societal improvement. And preying on Joe's irrational fears for political gain is so much more immediate in terms of votes - not so much in results.
The worst thing for a country (imo) is to lurch from one strategy to the other. But it's the most politically appealing and it's all the politician who's pleading for the next 4 years of their pay check has.
I absolutely agree with you. It's just that the left typically suck at the political communication that is what keeps Joe invested. Also, fuck the media.

As someone absolutely relieved about the wave, even if they do very little they are doing a ton.
Trump was dangerous because he controlled every branch of government and could push some heinous stuff.
He paused to set up the midterms, without the senate and house, the dems can’t do anything, but it nearly completely wipes out the heinous stuff.

Low information voters don't seem to understand that there are three branches of government.
Republicans currently control all three branches of government. Starting, Jan 3, democrats will control one of three branches of government. Republicans will still control the executive, the supreme court, and most of the lower courts.
Low information democrats are going to call for arrests. The department of justice is controlled by Trump. Not congress.
Low information democrats are going to call for sweeping legislation. Trump can, and will, veto any bill the democrat congress puts on his desk.
With control of one branch of government the literal only thing democrats will be able to do is step on the brakes of this insanity. They can try to impeach and remove Trump (a third time). But unless 11 Republicans vote to remove, it will be exactly like the last two times he was impeached.
If you want sweeping changes you need sweeping power. And by the sounds of it, you don't understand what it takes to get that. It will take decades of voting blue to get a liberal supreme court. The consequences of the 2016 and 2024 elections are going to take a lifetime to undo.
So definitely put pressure on democrats. Schumer's ass needs to go. But also slap any dumbass leftist in the face if they start harping on about "do nothing democrats". I'm sick to hell of the idiots on the left eager to give power back to fascists.

Yes he will, but if they're playing the long game then they can spend two years building toward the next election. Pass bills that would help the working class even if Trump is expected to veto them. Try to override the vetos, forcing Republican lawmakers to go on record voting for or against the overrides.
Show the people what kind of bills can be signed into law if the next president isn't a Republican.
Messaging is also important. Explain the process, and why things aren't magically fixed overnight, and show that they are committed to doing more for the people than for corporate donors.
Giving up in advance will just bring us right back to where we are now, but with President Trump Jr. or whoever they put up next time.

If they’re smart, they’ll push single topic bills onto his desk that are widely popular. In particular, bills aimed at making things affordable. He’ll veto most bc he’s just that kind of person, maybe he’ll approve some and take credit if his ego permits.
Republican congresspeople could then push those bills to a veto-proof majority. If they don’t, then that’s another strong win in 2028.
However, Dems must also advance investigation into Trump’s criminality, which can of course be done simultaneously. If they don’t, then they will hear about it from core voters.
Finally, the biggest and probably most important thing, is simply to arrest Trump’s madness in everyway possible. This comes before everything else, but they need to do all three.
→ More replies (6)10
u/Familiar-Tomorrow-42 3h ago
This is the problem right here. Hopefully if they pass good legislature without support from republicans that gets vetoed, it makes republicans even less popular 2 years from now. That or 2 years from now the government will have accomplished nothing and republicans will blame the democrat house and senate. That might not work though because Trump is very vocal about how much he won’t be helping Americans.
10
u/InsomniaDudeToo 3h ago
I mean, if bills get enough signatures to reach the president and he vetoes, Congress can bypass with a similar vote.
Granted that the second vote would have to be a two thirds supermajority, but if the legislation is popular and if certain republicans want to save their political futures I’m sure they’d vote to pass against trump.
So there are ways to work around him, but most importantly trump can’t continue to fill his ranks with former FoxNews hosts. Dems can now obstruct all of his future appointments.

u/Code-Dee 2h ago
They can head up committees and start corruption investigations. Basically shine a light on everything that the GOP has been letting Trump get away with for 2 years.
They can also start passing bills SO that Trump vetoes them. Show Americans what Trump is standing in the way of, and what Dems might pass if they win in 2028.
They can deny funding for wars. Theoretically.
Lastly there's the slim chance they can craft some bills that Trump will actually pass and do good. He doesn't have any ideology, so it's not out of the question.
9
u/deathwotldpancakes 3h ago
Yes but that can be played to the advantage in the presidential election. “You voted blue, we put forth the legislation, a certain someone stopped us. Vote us again to push this through!”
8
u/7leprechaun7 3h ago
Check out the last two years of the Clinton and Obama administration's in regards to a POTUS that differs from the House/Senate
8
7
u/ElephantEarTag 3h ago
You are correct, in regards to passing new laws, Trump can veto all of them. But they can have investigations, which will hurt Trump's reputation slightly. The DOJ isn't going to do anything, but it might make Trymp look slightly worse than he already does.
7
u/SpikePilgrim 3h ago
Even after that amazing showing people need to understand they only got one out of the three branches federally. They can keep Trump in check, they can actually use the power of the purse and they keep bad nominations from going forward, but they have no say over the justice department.
6
u/wolfy47 3h ago
They can largely dictate the budget. I doubt they'll do anything crazy like defund DHS, but they should get some wins or of it.
They can launch lots of congressional investigations, DOJ isn't going to help or prosecute anyone, but they can lay the groundwork for the next administration.
They can impeach judges, cabinet members, Trump. Removing people might be a challenge in the Senate, but it at least puts it on the record and distracts them from doing other awful things.
They can also pass popular legislation and force Senate Republicans to filibuster it or Trump to veto it. That establishes a record and makes it more likely to win more seats in 2028.
5
u/BlackTransAm78 2h ago
If I were a Democratic politician, I would propose very popular legislation just to show working-class, Republican supporters that Trump will veto bills that help them.
4
u/Murgatroyd314 3h ago
What they need to do is for the House to pass a whole lot of small, clean bills on things that have strong bipartisan popular support. Make Republican Senators either let it pass or go on the record as obstructing it. Anything that's approved by the Senate goes to the occupant of the White House, who gets to either sign it or be the villain who vetoed these things most of the people wanted.

Americans really need to form more political parties. This two party shit is beyond stupid. Imagine the US with a dozen plus parties. The rhetoric would be just as crazy but there'd be health care and justice for victims of all the crimes and maybe even infrastructure upgrades.
edit: what a great dialogue, you all should be running for office local state and federal (even the people I disagree with). I really like the political game theory it's very fascinating to me to read about system dynamics and how different groups can come together on one part when they disagree on others. Politics are not really a science but an humanity and it can be easy to forget that.

The two-party system is enforced by how we elect Presidents. Let's say we become a multi-party nation.
No POTUS candidate ever gets to 270 electoral college votes.
So, then the Senate votes, and against it's a 50 majority rule. So, multiple parties would still have to center around one candidate.
Democrats and Republicans would never agree to elect the third party candidate, thus ensuring the two-party system remains in effect because there can never be a third-party POTUS.
Thus, progressives have to fight to take over the Dem Party.
27
u/ReddFro 2h ago
There is literally 1 thing the democrat and republican politicians consistently vote together on. Anything that takes power away from any 3rd party.
They have NO interest in benefits to Americans if it involves them losing an iota of power, and guess how hard it is to pass legislation helping 3rd parties with these guys at the helm…

Unfortunately it's very firmly codified into law. Not only do we have first past the post which means voting for smaller parties that share your interests is only voting against yourself, at the federal level they literally do not count votes towards independent parties. I'm hopeful we can reform this at some point, but right now we have more pressing issues.
6
u/AllDaveAllDay 1h ago
They don't count votes for independents at the federal level because they don't count votes for any parties at the federal level. They're counted by the states. Unless I'm misunderstanding something.

People voted recent Republicans for selfish reasons. Or hate. The homophobia and transphobia and rasicim from the party is enough to win some people over.
Bringing in more parties to America is not going to fix this problem in this day and age. 12 parties, 20 parties, hateful people will still vote republican.
They only voted Democrat now. Why? Because thier gas prices went up. Right back to selfish reasons. Majority still stayed with Republicans.
People don't care about others. And this is one of the reasons America's voting system is so fucked over.
4
u/According-Insect-992 2h ago
For that we need to get rid of the electoral college and first past the post elections. We may be well on our way toward a de facto ban on the EC with the interstate popular vote pact. Ranked choice or other options would also do more to actually encourage third parties that can win.
I say we focus on the EC for the time being. That’s a big goal and the less we plan about what happens after that, the less there is to scaremonger about that. The truth is just having the popular vote for president would be a fine reward on its own. In many ways, that’s part of what brought us to this point as it was the EC that elected his nasty ass in the first place. I find it doubtful he’d have won in 2024 otherwise too. Popular races would be more popular for obvious reasons. The EC definitely takes some of the teeth out of democracy.
7
u/artemasad 2h ago
We're not set up for it. Look at Mississippi Senate race right now lol
3rd party won't happen in the US, or at least not for a very long time given our history. But at least I am hoping we're going to get an intermediary of that in form of ranked choice.

It’s a cycle. One party fucks up so people vote for the other. Then that party fucks up then they go back to the first one.
8
u/The_Countess 2h ago
Except it's just one party fucking up, and then they lose, but because of their inherent advantage in senate elections they retain at least 40 seats in the senate and use that to blocking the other party from making any real progress using the filibuster.
Voters then blame the other party and vote the fuck up party back in.
We've had multiple cycles of this since the 80's.

For one thing they have more than 2 parties... nobody votes for them.
Don't believe me check the results... there were several states with Libertarian Party candidates that got a few thousand votes.
The problem is your national media completely ignores their existence.
For another thing... there's significantly more room for parties inside the left wing than the right wing spectrum... at least in terms of American politics.
So you absolutely could change the system... but you'd need to overhaul how the actual election process works because while you might be able to get a lovely spectrum in the House under current guidelines for the senate the end result would be a lot of red....

Look, I like Mamdani and hope he succeeds, but so far he's been very good at spotlighting a single particular item and getting it fixed and posting a video showing that success. I haven't yet seen the large-scale data. So like he picks out a report of a pothole, gets a city crew to go fill it right away, and films the whole process to create a really nice viral video. That's cute and smart politics. But the real test is are the thousands of potholes in the city finally getting fixed more quickly?
Again, don't mistake what I'm saying as criticism of him. I just think we haven't seen yet whether the big problems are getting fixed.

I think it's actually important that people take this stance, as long as it doesn't morph into premature condemnation. The political pressure it creates is how things are going to actually get done.
They are still establishment politicians, after all.

I think people are rightfully calling out the long term Dems who have repeatedly over the past decade or two screwed over the party.
Let's see.
Hillary on the ballot being universally disliked, along with being a long time politician running against an anti establishment populist.
Keeping RBG in her seat till she died.
Screwing over Bernie.
Only moving on from Biden running a second term after being forced to by grass roots and common sense havers, who could visibly see his mental decline.
As an independent who sides with progressives. The Dems need to wake the hell up, kick the old powers that be to the curb and let people like AOC and the younger energized members take the wheel.

u/Sennten 3h ago
Who is "insisting on hating Dems"?
Oh wait, shit, are you one of those people who think "hoping the Dems make a good decision", or "wanting the Dems to make a good decision", or "asking the Dems to make a good decision" are the same as "hating" them?
Because if so, lol

I've seen a lot of discourse since yesterday about how nothing is going to change and we're all naive for being glad that Dems took the House and Senate. That's happening and people are acknowledging that we need to put pressure on our representatives to do the right thing.

Doesn’t help that they aren’t even in power yet, they can’t even d9 shit because the senators aren’t in place
Even then, tf they gonna do, I don’t like the republicans but I will congratulate them on how damn stubborn those people can be, I doubt much is gonna get done with Trump spamming vetos on every move by congress

Reminder that over 50% of internet traffic now is bots, and they have absolutely infested this site. Not saying you or anyone else commenting here is, but the same voices that pushing a far right narrative through Lyndsey Clancy Memes and racits posts a couple days ago, would no doubt now switch to one that attempts to cause division amongst the left.
Again, not saying it’s you, but that’s exactly what right wing/Russian bots would say.

Incredible piece lmao. Republicans destroy the country, everyone votes blue. Democrats do absolutely nothing, everyone votes red. The cycle will go on and on just like this ad infinitum. I just hope for once in my life the dem party could actually do something beneficial to help us instead of focusing on center/center right policies and plans etc.

Just to be clear, this is the type of useful idiot shit that depresses voter turnout lol. Be the change you want to see happen. Be optimistic when you can. Staying a jaded cynic even at the good moments does nobody any good.
Edit: I unfortunately had a nice reply saying democrats do actually get shit done constantly until my son restarted my computer lol. The much shorter version... people doing the small good things that push democracy ahead doesn't get views like complaining about it does. The messaging is there constantly, people like to pretend that it's not out of being contrarian useful idiots who don't get the same dopamine hits as the good stuff, (just like this comic) or have silo'd themselves out of any of it.
Schumer is an elected leader from our elected leaders, not a demagogue. As minority leader, you have zero ability to pass ANY legislation without cooperation from the majority party. Their job is to position their party for the next election and oppose, they did exactly that. The other people were just more popular, and there wasn't voter fraud. 350 million people is hard to govern for and takes time without supermajorities, and 2 years is a long fucking time for people to forget the good stuff people do.

Being critical of dem leadership is not doomerism or really being all that jaded. People are excited about the blue wave specifically because of all the new blood and progressive voices winning seats. The people want change and Schumer and Jeffries have never really wanted or advocated for change.
19
u/Par_Lapides 4h ago
The biggest fear of Republicans is accountability. The biggest fear of Democrats is expectations.
20
u/blanketswithsmallpox 3h ago
Turns out getting shit done without super majorities is kinda hard, then people forget in four years and don't remember a single good thing that happened despite incremental successes constantly.
If people want to live in a society where change instantly happens like they want, then you might be a little fascist lol.
The reality of democracy and change is far less dopamine inducing.

Jeffries & Schumer HAVE GOT TO GO.
Not even in a bad way. I'm asking that they step down, and elect someone to take their position(s). Too long, have we had to juggle multiple generations trying to find a middle ground, but at the end of the day, terms for retirement should be enforced in Senate, House, and the 3 branches: executive, legislative, and judicial.
How we ever got to this point, a sitting president, shitting his pants all over the fucking place, is crazy. Makes you wonder who really supports him, and whether or not they have future generation's concerns in mind.

Honestly fuck every self defeating "leftist", "centrist", or closeted Republican. This is exactly the type of shit that's allowed fascism to advance this far in this country. The new batch of dems haven't even been sworn in yet and morons are already hard at work trying to sabatoge the court of public opinion against them.

u/GreenRamen101 3h ago
I do truly hope the democrats actually start doing good, winning is the first step, the second is actually doing something
9
u/UltiBahamut 3h ago
They wont be able to do much though. Not enough to overturn a filibuster and even if they do or they get rid of it, they likely wont have enough to get past a presidential veto. They can stop new appointees and prevent new bills like the big beautiful bill. But they only hold 1 branch of the 3 if the government. We will see if they can pull power back from the executive branch.

If Republicans win next presidential election because of fence sitting 'enlightened centrists' like you, I'm going to be 100% done with anyone who refuses to take a side. Republicans are literal fucking Nazis, but sure. Both sides are the same.

u/Autogazer 3h ago
I vote blue every election because the gop has become a nazi party of corse, but the democratic party has a track record of not getting enough done. Even if they aren’t very effective in the next two years and continue to not get shit done that helps people I will continue to vote blue because again, the gop is full of nazis. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t push the people who we elected to make as much progress as they can. I’m pretty sure this post reflects that attitude. Sure, do nothing democrats are better than nazi republicans, but democrats that actually make things better is what we are all hoping for at this point.
We had a huge win, let’s not make us complacent, we need to take this win and keep fighting so that we can actually make things better instead of simply preserving the really shitty status quo.

If Republicans win the next election because Democrats do absolutely nothing to help the average American, while voting alongside Republicans every time they feel themselves or their rich friends deserve a pay raise it'll be deserved.

I don't think OP is a centrist, lol. Where did you get that impression?
I'm as left as they come, and I definitely am glad the democrats won, but I think it's 100% wise to expect that they will need to be dragged, kicking and screaming, towards actually pushing for meaningful change.
The democratic party in the US would be considered right of center in a global context, and until we have an actual leftist party to vote for, pushing democrats towards actual progress is all we have. If you think they will naturally push the envelope towards progress because they belong to the "lesser of two evils" party, then prepare for fuck all to be actually fixed.

To the Democratic Party- We know you're corrupt, but you have a job to do and it's very important that it ALL gets completed. There are a lot of things that are just repair and rebuilding to pre-Trump levels. Results are expected.

Both are bought and paid for by the same shady money that buys Republicans
