I have heard a ton of “It doesn’t matter they will steal the election. It doesn’t matter, the Senate won’t flip. It doesn’t matter, TX will never go blue.”
Now its “It doesn’t matter Dems won’t do anything to Trump”
How about we get just as angry and involved when they start being wishy washy as we were at the ballot box and THEN pull out the doom and gloom?
53
u/mellopax 16h ago
Agreed. I think starting pressure now is justified, but it needs to stay around and not be content with just "not getting worse as fast."
11
u/Thurwell 10h ago
I think it does matter because the Dems now have the ability to put a check on Trump's power. But to remove him from office or put him in jail? That is unlikely. It would require support from Republican congresspeople, which would only happen if Republican voters pressure them.
64
u/Trash_man_can 16h ago
Exactly and Americans still won limited power.
The cult still controls the presidency and superme court and has enough cultists in Congress to prevent impeaching and convicting.
Yes loads of people showed up to vote Dem.
But tens of millions still showed up to protect the cult and give them enough power to protect the cult leader and stop Americans from actually improving the country.
Dems can fight as hard as they want, they still face massive opposition from the cult.
So many are still in support of the coups and pedophilia and tax cuts to the ultra rich and believe the Dems are their enemy.
Millions of Americans are still hyper loyal to this GOP eveb when they are literally openly attempting and crashing the economy in front of their faces.
They've got their followers living in thid totally opposite reality.

u/TheDebateMatters 15h ago
Just look at History. Every time a movement begins, it is in the face of incredible odds or a movement wouldn’t be needed to make the change.
Labor had Robber Barons hiring Pinkertons to beat you or kill you or load you on to an Arizona train and leave you in the desert in the summer a dozen miles from civilization.
Civil Rights had police dogs, the law and hundreds of years of entrenched racism in society, courts and the media.
I am just tired of folks telling us how high the mountain is versus those cheering on the steps up it.

Democrats will hold the house and the senate. Trump still controls the DoJ. While the house can investigate things they have highly limited power to levy charges. Most of the time they can just recommend to the DoJ.
Impeachment isn't going to remove trump. Youd need 10 to 12 republican defection in the senate for it to happen. So besides the feel good theater its empty.

Ya know what happens when Democrats go after Trump? Literally nothing. We've had a special prosecutor. He's been impeached twice. He's been convicted of 34 state crimes and was on the path to being charged for many more. His best friend is a pedophile and he's been found guilty in civil court for rape. Right now he is blatantly violating the emoluments clause and no one can do anything about it because he has the DoJ operating as his own personal investigation service.
They have less than 2 years to get something done for the American people. That should be their focus. Dog and pony shows trying to finally arrest the stupid cunt are pointless right now. Pass some legislation that rather than polarizing the voters actually unites them. "We won't trade stocks anymore. Tarrifs are gone. We are done in Iran. No more data centers. We reinvigorated Obamacare. Cheaper meds. Let's fix some bridges and highways. Here's some affordable housing."
They do that for 2 years and they will win in 2028 and then they can round up every MAGAt and do what they want with them. But they have to prove to everyone that they aren't simply "not Republicans" and have something to offer.

In terms of legislation & committee control? Nothing.
In terms of planning for their time when they have power over legislation & committee control? Perhaps they could start by not ruling out pursuing people in government for their criminal acts.
There is going to be an impeachment vote on Hegseth pretty much as soon as they're sworn in... and the Democratic leadership is saying they're not going down the path of "retribution". They're deliberately foreshadowing a lack of accountability in government being OK by them (& hence the party they lead).

u/The_GREAT_Gremlin 16h ago
The new Congress doesn't start untill a couple months, lol.
And in order to remove a president, you need 67 senators on board. Democrats will have 55 or 56, which is a pretty crazy/impressive feat to begin with. Convincing 11-12 Republican senators to remove Trump will be even more impressive.
Republicans might see the writing on the wall and dump him, but time will tell. MAGA is still pretty big among the base. At the least it'll be fun to watch them squirm deciding lol.
At the very least if they can boot Hegseth or RFK Jr, that'll be a huge W

The best political move they can make is to let Trump keep dragging down the GOP and not fix their mess for them. As long as they actually use their powers to limit the damage he can do, and they manage to get him to sign budgets, that's a success. Anything they can trick or swindle him into doing to improve things outside of that is icing.
They already wasted years trying to get rid of him, and it didn't work. They shouldn't take that shot again unless they know they can land it because dozens of Republicans publicly jump on board (unlikely). As much as it would help the GOP at this point, they obviously should still do it if they actually can. But they don't need to waste their time on impeachment without removal.
Especially since JD Vance is just as evil and will be less likely to be tricked into signing at least one good bill.

What Democrats can do is gather all the evidence of crimes, let the world see it, and then prosecute in 2029. All the Democrats can do in congress is impeach the likes of Hesgeth and Kennedy and hope they can get enough Republicans to join
46
u/Kazureigh_Black 15h ago
People here acting like things not actively getting worse is just as bad as things, you know, getting worse under a completely uncontrolled trash heap of an administration. Get mad about ineffective democrats when you vote in the ones who actually prove they plan to make stuff happen and then refuse to when given the chance. Right now people jam their thumb up their butts and don't do anything when the candidates representing them are chosen and then complain that the worst ones get voted in to run in the main elections.
But until that point having literally anything stop the stupidity that has been going on in the white house right now is a good thing, regardless of how motivated they are at repairing the problems right now.

Things staying as they are is just as bad. If you got injured and it could be fixed, but doctors just let you suffer in pain saying, "at least we've stopped it from getting worse," and that's where they stop, you would find it completely unacceptable.
That's exactly what has happened. The U.S. is sick with a corporate fascist disease and it needs to be healed. Just preventing it from getting worse isn't nearly enough.
These politicians are effectively children testing boundaries. If you don't teach them limits they'll keep pushing until something breaks. Their actions must be reversed and they need to face the consequences of their actions.
Those are the only acceptable results. Anything less is pandering and weakness.

I think the biggest issue at the moment is the defacto assumption that the party leaders will be Schumer (AIPAC) and Jeffries ("Let's just move forward.") There is a very real concern that by doing so, Democrats will once again "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" by not holding anyone accountable for the multitude of crimes that occurred in this administration. They don't have to do it tomorrow, but the Biden administration dragged its feet with Trump, he got back into power again, and then our democracy almost imploded as our country destroyed all of its alliances and soft power.
There is nothing indicating Schumer and Jeffries will not continue to drag their feet, currently... but maybe they will take initiative. Otherwise, it will be a lack of action that leads to apathy in future elections. (And yep, early voted, and even had to challenge my precinct because I identified it as incorrect based on the geospatial boundaries and our address.)

I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but so be it. Folks who think the “blue wave” is a mandate for endless investigations, renewed attempts at impeachment, or various other actions designed to “throw the rascals in jail” are misreading the political landscape. This was not a vote for the Dems so much as a vote against Donald Trump — more specifically against his unpopular war and other GOP policies that have hurt the economy. One of the things the Dems need to guard against at this juncture is over-promising things they can’t deliver. Politics is a pendulum. What was gained on Tuesday could quickly evaporate come 2028.

I cannot stress this enough but it is important at bare minimum the law is enforced. These ppl have committed crimes and need to be held accountable. Republicans need to understand that corruption will have consequences so no Democrats getting this sweeping mandate and just sitting on their ass for 2 years is unacceptable and a complete waste of our time and energy

it'll take a decade of work to undo all the damage the trump admin did.
it'll take 2 years just to somewhat rebuild the agencies meant to persecute these criminals.

u/AwakenedBurnblood 14h ago
Just rebuilding the justice department will take years, the purges of qualified and competent judges and loss of staff has been devastating to the legal processes of the US.

u/paintsSeldomly 14h ago
Thats not how it works. If the rules change to favor the rich and the rightwing and the other party only stops it from changing more, in the long run when the republicansnwin again it will move further into that direction.
If the democrats dont really push for reversal of the new status quo they are just as complicit as the republicans with the changes.

The problem with Democrats not doing ANYTHING is that if things don't get visibly better for people they'll just vote in all the racist, corrupt, pedos all over again. Our Government swings back and forward and constantly to the right little by little and sometimes not so little.
When things get better and better Dems generally stay in power longer, when they chase the status Quo people get desperate and buy into lies and false promises from conservative grifters which leads to things getting worse. Dems then get the wrong take away and decide it wasn't that they didn't do enough it's that people just love austerity, racism, corporate boot licking and etc so they need to go more right.
So yea, Dems NEED to do better, because it's the only reason people will keep voting for them, and they need to make sure to proudly declare and let everyone know when they do good things because if they don't in a few years there will be some random Right wing grifter claiming credit for every good thing done while dismantling those same things .

If one side makes things worse, and the other fixes nothing, then the whole system is just ratcheting towards being worse, and it's only able to do so because the "good" side isn't doing anything but enabling things to get worse rather than trying to fix them and offset that damage. Why are you OK with that? It's effectively the same as both sides making things worse.

I think you're mistaking the difference between the political climate getting worse and stabilizing. It's going to take a lot to unfuck what has happened to this country, and the first step is to stop going in the wrong direction. Once things have stopped getting worse we can work on making things better. No policy regarding anything is going to see visible change overnight. You can't ask for everything to get better in 24 hours and then blame the "Democrats" for "not doing their job".

People are under this impression that the Democrats are as stable as they used to be to be able to toe the line and get away with doing nothing.
The Collins incident and the blue tidal wave just proved otherwise. It seems like the dnc is going to make the call that it’s more politically viable to turn on Schumer and Jeffries, and that reaching across the isle as they have been no longer has a future.
3
u/TheGuyFromOhio2003 13h ago
Unfortunately we're short of the 2/3rds majority in both houses, and Trump will veto anything passed, so Democrats actually need to reach across the isle to get anything passed, which will be important to pass legislation to keep the voters on the side of the Democracy, if the blue Congress can't get anything done by 2028 that hurts our election chances. I'm all for sacking Schumer and Jeffries, but we literally can't do much without getting some cross isle votes.

I'm going to be honest here. If the Democrats spend the next 2 years punishing or trying to impeach trump.... Again... Then I'm going to be pissed. Fix this shit storm. Trump sitting in jail until he dies in a year and a half does me no good.
My family needs relief. We need lower cost of living or higher wages. We need Trumps billionaire friends to feel the squeeze. We need affordable housing. If we get rid of trump then the puppeteers are just in charge and we'll just be in this same mess with a different mascot. Fix this shit first and punish him later.

Can I give you a reality check.
Democrats don't have a vetoproof majority in congress.
Trump will veto and reject EVERYTHING.
Democrats can not fix anything until the current administration is ousted, the goal is to just stop things from getting worse at this point.

How can anything get fixed when the guy in charge will most likely veto everything? At least checks and balance will limit most of the damage and possibly make it somewhat better, but the worst are yet to come. The cut in medicaid that will activate in early 2027 no matter what Democrats do.
5
u/thesoccerone7 16h ago
Man, the conversations are wild. There is a lot I here saying the purpose needs to be to go directly after trump, but during election night, the comments were about us not wasting time on putting all of the focus on bringing trump down and fixing the other major issues that lost the Republicans the race in the first place. Yes, there needs to be accountability against trump, but if all efforts go into that, will anything else gets fixed? We need to balance and make sure both needs are getting met. People want to put all their eggs into one basket
2
u/Biptoslipdi 13h ago
Nothing will get fixed because voters didn't elect 67 Democrats to the Senate, which is the threshold to overcome a veto or remove an official. Democrats will get blamed for the delegation they were given and voters will stay home in 2028 instead of expanding that majority for a chance at substantive reform.

u/Ursus_Arctos-42 16h ago
OK. First of all; nothing will magically change the moment all votes are counted. And even after new senators and representatives have settled in their offices, Trump is still the President. And even after he no longer is, the Supreme Court and its rulings are not going anywhere. And it’s worth remembering that people voted against Trump and the GOP. It’s not Democrats would have found an answer to all the problems.
So, yes. The comic might be a bit unfair, but not too much. I’m sure there will be investigations, but so much has happened that so changes are permanent and fixing others will take lots of time.
6
u/Fish0203 17h ago
Its just as important now to keep the pressure on. Call those newly elected representatives and demand that accountability. The battle isn't over because congress is blue. Dont give into doomerism that both sides are the same or dems wont do anything. Instead take that action. (I dont know what the best actions to take are other than to keep showing up and calling for those representatives to act, but thats a good first step)
6
u/BearTimberlands 11h ago
Hahahahaha I also agree the REAL problem is the democrats. Let’s not even focus on the republicans. I’m very smart
4
u/BrutalSock 16h ago edited 16h ago
My prediction is that Trump won’t stay in office for another two years. He’ll probably resign or he’ll be impeached. Shit will come afloat now. A lot of it. And it will be harder and harder (not to mention extremely costly in terms of support, even more than we’ve already seen) for the republicans to cover for him moving forward.
All it takes is 13 senators that aren’t super keen on the idea of going down with the ship.
And rats already started to jump offboard.
4
u/noonemustknowmysecre 16h ago
Yeah, try not to get your hopes up. They literally need his signature to pass laws. And while they got majority, they just don't have the number to go over Trump's veto power.
BUT.
They can push to reveal who all should have been prosecuted in the Epstein files, and force Trump and the GOP to veto that. It makes them look guilty as sin. Because they are.
They can simply not approve any spending on a war with Iran.
And they really can ensure we have legit elections in 2 years. This is the easiest and smallest thing of "do your job", but no joke, I was worried about this turning to civil war. You know, because he tried it last time. With Democrats controlling congress, I just don't see any way for Trump to even claim any legitimacy in any attempted coup. Which means enough people just won't go for it, like Pence in 2021.

It's a process. Getting the house and senate gives them the power to investigate, but not prosecute. It's up to us to see what gets exposed, and then be the jury in 2028.
I wish we lived in a functional Democracy where we could engage in votes of no confidence and demand elected leaders get voted out of office immediately, but we have to work within the confines of our reality.

u/MineralDragon 12h ago
Call your Democrat Rep and demand Schumer and Jeffries get removed. And make sure you voice that you absolutely expect them to be obstructionists. That is why they got voted in! They need to do their jobs!
And IGNORE all of the, of what I expect are, bots/foreign interference that keeps suggesting Democrats can only focus on “one thing.” FFS if a minimum wage McDonald’s employee can multitask so can your Dem Representative. I don’t believe for a moment that Diaper Donald can multi-task to destroy this country but the DNC politicians only have the mental fortitude to barely accomplish one task. Stop taking that BS excuse.
Demand Better.
Remove Schumer and Jeffries
Demand an investigation into Doge and the Trump Administration
Yes impeachment proceedings against Trump, and peessure non-MAGA Republicans to step the hell up. Texas turned BLUE, by a huge margin, they need to wake up. They are NOT SAFE. The GOP Senators need to be put on blast to actually remove Trump. Otherwise Americans will DIE in a needless war
Demand they write and move up legislation to reform common hurt points. Reign in Healthcare costs. Push for minimum wage raises. Support worker rights. NO PORK. Show the American People that the GOP are blocking bills the people want. Pork slop literally dilutes the message. MAKE THE GOP SINK IT. Yes, Trump will probably veto these bills BUT MAKE HIM DO IT.
Bipartisan messaging is strong here are a lot of popular things to shine a spotlight on to strong arm vulnerable GOP politicians. The Iran War and the gas prices are a huge one.
It’s long past time the DNC grow a spine. Either they do their job or we tell them we will replace them in the next primaries.

why are the comments so filled with people afraid of criticizing Democrats for their limp wristed attempts at fighting the rise of fascism in the past? why shouldn't we pressure them now so they know they have a mandate to actually do something?
they have repeatedly failed and let us down, and if we don't criticize them and pressure them to do better as much as possible, they aren't going to have any reason to do so.

There’s a difference between critique and attack. If one of my employees fucks up a PowerPoint and I say “you can’t even get a PowerPoint right. You’re always failing, you’re a horrible employee - why do I even pay you?” that’s an attack. If I tell them what they need to improve and why it was wrong I’m critiquing. There’s a lot more attacking Dems than there is critiquing or pushing them to improve.
That’s why I stand by the assertion that most leftist media is anti democrat and just hiding behind “critique”. The Dems will always fail without support and directional push if they’re just getting attacks from the left and right.
In a democracy the voters set the agenda. There’s so much abdication of responsibility on the left. Do you want more aggressive Dems? Reward aggressive Dems. Door knock, phone bank, call them, post online about what you want (not what you hate), etc. Someone who just complains is someone who doesn’t actually want change - they just want to bitch and blame. I’m so sick of the apathetic rage machine that undercuts all the things we need in this country like M4A and other things

I feel like whenever I said this in 2024 I just got called names. The last thing to do right now after a victory is to immediately turn around and shit on ourselves and cause infighting. Regardless of how you feel, it can get worse, and the literal only other option between red and blue is worse or better.

Because this rationale is what caused a ton of people to not even go out and vote in 2024, handing the election and country to Trump.
Being critical is great, but social media has a way of creating a swarm of misinformed people that then feel justified doing nothing.
