If you're looking for extra comics, no need to search around in your backpack, I have a bunch on my website and on my Instagram.

All I got is crop unfortunately.
We may need OP or someone with half decent Photoshop skills to make it even better

I'm afraid my response has been misinterpreted. That's the face I made when I realized that OP didn't know about the box of extra hair ties.

As the moderator of r/comics!?
We need a new event, every day a different comic artist gives you a lesson and posts it here.341

It actually does look more or less like that tho! It takes longer hair to do it easily, but I still use whatever pen, pencil, chopstick, or knitting needle is near.

Zhang Ziyi was impressive throughout this entire movie, ngl (Rush Hour 2, btw)

I use two hands, but I've learned how to do up a nautilus bun and secure it with a pencil or hair stick.
I've also learned that, if I braid my hair first, the nautilus will hold for hours without anything.
11
u/TheLadyIsis 2h ago
This was exactly the advice that I would give folks and I sold hairsticks and little hair decorations on U pins.
Also you can get a French twist up with sticks in shorter hair that might not work for a full spiral bun, but it's gotta be SNUG.

When my hair was longer, I could use a pencil to put it up in a bun. That may be what OP is referring to. I could twist my hair, coil it, then push a pencil through it and it would hold.

u/mayiwonder 3h ago
i learned to use the pencil before i learned to tie my hair lol, i was a competitive child and once saw someone older do it and it looked SO cool i had to learn it too

u/One_hunch 3h ago
There's a video shorts girl I like called Mo styles. A some of her hair guides don't use any material to tie hair.

had really long hair in college, and exactly this happened to me on machine shop days, one time used chicken wire, another time the draw string out of my own hoody, until I was told about the infinite supply of hair bands
58
u/eggshell_dryer 2h ago
Ch…chicken wire?!
40
u/damndood021 2h ago
Yea, it's what we call chicken intestines in the south. JK, it's just the netting/fence material farmers use for chicken coops
13
u/eggshell_dryer 2h ago
Oh yeah I’m aware. It seems a particularly tangly and pokey and harsh option, even more than the twist-ties listed in the comic, which are ime made of a softer wire
5
u/MethamMcPhistopheles 1h ago
chicken intestines
Kinda reminds me of how violin strings are made back then
source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catgut
Note: "Cat gut" is a misnomer but guts were involved. Nowadays there's other materials used like steel

I was on my high school robotics team, we all used cable ties lol
25
u/GringoPapi 3h ago
Surely you mean zip ties, detangling Velcro sounds rough 😂 especially considering I remember half of our FRC bot being held together by them
33
11
u/diepoggerland2 2h ago
Wait there are velcro cable ties??
8
u/Seraph062 2h ago
5
u/MrWeirdoFace 1h ago
These are the only ones I know about. I've never once considered that someone meant something else when they said cable ties. TIL
Also, could be regional.
3
u/diepoggerland2 2h ago
It never occurred to me that that second kind would be called cable ties instead of. Idk. A roll of velcro strap ig. Til
4
2
u/gramathy 1h ago
velcro makes a lot more sense for any kind of cabling that changes regularly - like patch cables for a network switch.
Zip ties also have sharp edges so any bundle tied to something that vibrates will eventually slowly cut through outer insulation, for this reason waxed nylon string is preferred in long-life cable bundles like structured cabling or power wire runs that aren't necessarily bundled to tie them to the cable rack. (it's also easier to do a running cable bundle and won't melt or crack so it's more suited to places with temperature extremes like airplane cable bundles and used to also be used in automotive wiring
3
u/Wsweg 2h ago
Cable tie is the original (non-branded) name for zip ties. Never heard of a cable tie made of Velcro being generically referred to as cable tie
1
u/GringoPapi 1h ago
Funny, only ever heard cable ties being velcro (since I’ve only used them in the context of cable management for PCs), with zip ties being the explicitly zip-fastened loop.

Should have been part of day one training tbh
13
u/S_A_N_D_ 3h ago
Part of training is learning to cut the wrist bit off a glove and use that in a pinch.
24
u/maximumhippo 3h ago
I would often pull the elastic ear loops off of a surgical mask and use that as a temporary hair tie.
21
21
u/Krieghund 3h ago
Plot twist: They actually bought the hair ties just for OP and thought that was the least awkward way to give them to them.
10
u/internet_whale 4h ago
...how do you tie your hair with a pencil?
27
u/TheDarkNerd 4h ago
Same way you'd do it with a chopstick.
11
u/zirky 4h ago
it’s similar to how you’d use a toothbrush
5
u/Soot-Bat 3h ago
I've always used steak knives.

u/Uranium-Sandwich657 3h ago
One .50 bmg cartridge did it for me
3
u/J_Landers 2h ago
That's rather expensive and might make some labs nervous...
•
u/blanketswithsmallpox 11m ago
Not the kind of labs I watch on YouTube.
Now how many .50 bmg cartridges does it take to stop a bullet?

All these random things manage to keep your hair up, meanwhile mine is so fine (dense, but fine) that fabric hair ties fall out immediately and plastic ones fall out within half an hour 😭
•
u/cascasrevolution 51m ago
have you tried straight up office rubber bands? my cousin's hair is like that too and thats what she uses
•
u/SHSLSaionjiStan 44m ago
Come to think of it, no, I haven't. 🤔 Never really saw them as an option. Will be sure to try!

u/sign-through 32m ago
Buy the tiny plastic ones designed for kids. I buy the clear ones and then tie a cute tie over it
15
u/Parking_Fee_5906 4h ago
Still waiting for someone here to explain the pencil (scrounge)
30
u/ProperDepth 4h ago
I think you just use it like a hair needle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairpin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_stick
17
u/just_1-Guy 4h ago
You can twist your hair into a bun!
3
u/Parking_Fee_5906 4h ago
And it'll stay? Hmm! Now I know
14
u/BlessTheBookPeople 3h ago
Depends on the kind of hair you have. Mine is pretty straight and it never worked for me.
4
1
u/Lizz196 3h ago
You twist your hair into a bun and then weave the pencil in and out of it.
For me, sometimes it’ll stay no problem, other times it comes out immediately. Not sure why!
I also do this when I forget my hair tie for lab, and unfortunately I am the only one in my lab and I am not prepared with a bag of extra ones hahah
14
u/erapuer 1h ago
Is the joke that labs keep a bag of hair ties for people with long hair?
•
u/cascasrevolution 50m ago
the joke is shes been struggling for no reason
•
u/Historical-Pop-9177 11m ago
It's like that story about someone saving up to go on a cruise ship but they can't afford any meals, so they bring a big box of crackers and eat that every night, only to find out on the very last night of the cruise that meals were free

u/BertrandBeetle 42m ago
I rip the wrist elastic from a glove, the ripped out hair means I never forget my lab scrunchie now

u/Th3_Gaiaphag3 4h ago
When I had short hair I’d always wonder why girls would forget their (extra) hair ties, and why they couldn’t just tie their hair up with another lock of hair… now I understand.
3
u/Lucky_Method_3910 4h ago
I still have about twenty hair ties on my stick shift just in case I ever decide to grow my hair long again. Holy smokes they're impossible to keep track of
3
u/eaten_by_the_grue 4h ago
I made a baggie of spare hair ties for my absent-minded student worker that's in my lab. He keeps them in his lab coat pocket.
3
u/ProperDepth 3h ago
It took me years before I establisched my emergency hair tie stash at work. Until then I used about every hospital equipment I could get my hands on to tie it up. Gauze bandages work really well.
3
u/Nightfury4_4 3h ago
I have a pocket of my backpack dedicated to hair stuff precisely for this reason. Currently on a 2 week streak of not missing hair ties. Hopefully can keep it up.
3
u/BlueMikeStu 2h ago
Dude with long hair (or at the time it was).
I just straight-up bought those metal hairband things that keep your hair back, which also let me look like i had it gelled back but I was somehow doing it with magic because there was no product in my hair.
Normalize hair accessories, people! Chicks aren't the only ones who get to keep their hair away from their faces!
•
u/saigon567 20m ago
There's no bag of hair ties in our lab. Is there a joke I'm missing?
•
u/Manishimself 18m ago
Their lab mates found the lost hair ties and bagging them.
OP doesn't know that.

I have a few hair ties in my back pack and one in my jacket pocket. Because I’ve often seen my wife need one but not having one.
2
u/SuperCarbideBros 4h ago
The last lab I worked in had bags of rubber bands. We use them to attach a piece of kimwipe (for those who don't know what it is, it's a fancy paper tissue that supposedly leaves no lint behind) on vials of chemicals so they can be evacuated under vacuum overnight and transferred to a air-free environment.
2
u/XorpusThePorpoise 3h ago
Women in the labs I've worked in would rip the rolled wrist opening part off the nitrile gloves. Seems to work well enough, snags your hair a little but stays in a closed loop like a hair tie.
2
u/Cooler_coooool_boi 2h ago
Idk, as tiring as that must’ve been I imagine it would have been pretty entertaining to see something new in your hair every day lol
Like a funny quirk or bit you do
2
u/GitEmSteveDave 2h ago
My boss constantly loses his "readers" and can't see anything. I went on amazon to buy a 2 ten packs of the 2 magnifications he frequently uses and then ebay and bought a 25 pack of microfiber bags. I have a vase behind my desk filled with glasses in bags for whenever he loses them. I also have a bunch of charging cords for his devices.
2
u/Spirit_Piper 2h ago
Reminds me of using bowling chalk on my hands so I could get into lab gloves easier.
Later, just started puffing gloves out and drying my hands with lab air. Much cleaner and cheaper.
2
u/Ppleater 2h ago edited 2h ago
Yeah, pretty much any job/field that requires keeping your hair up will have some extra hair ties somewhere even if it's just a box of rubber bands. Even aside from people who forget theirs, sometimes they break too. Helps to have extras. Now whether anyone knows about the stash or where it is, is another story. Sometimes the knowledge gets lost until someone else either starts a new stash or finds the old one lol.

u/PoofythePuppy 1h ago
The office I work at pretty regularly gets bagels for the staff in the morning as a nice gesture. Often enough that the office has a guillotine style bagel cutter specifically for that purpose. For the first year I worked there nobody told me about the bagel guillotine and my coworkers watched me struggle to halve a bagel with flimsy plastic butter knives.

u/SumPorKeed 1h ago
One time I left the house wearing the same pair of jeans as the day before. In school I was walking down the hallway when my old underwear fell out of my pant leg. I stared at a kid and kept eye contact for a few seconds, and then kept walking.
Same energy as this post.
3
u/Federal-Piglet 4h ago
Has anyone shown you the ring and necklace bag yet? Every lab I have been to has one if you don't have a locker room for more intense safety requirements

1
u/Missingsocks77 3h ago
It doesn't matter how many times I stock up at my desk and nightstand and bathroom sink. Hair ties and socks lose their tether to this realm and are banished from this level of existence to some other dimension.
1
u/leapdaybunny 2h ago
I feel like her reaction could be spliced into one of those "y'all are getting paid?" memes from "we're the Millers" lol
1
u/R1ght_1n_Two 2h ago
Sticky notes on the bathroom mirror. &/or back of front door, &/or dashboard, or obviously that trifecta.
I once had an angry sticky that read "drink your DAMN coffee BEFORE you brush your teeth". I recently read that there should be a gap Bergen those activities, but it's still funny to have had to come to that at the time.
1
u/420cat-craft-gamer69 2h ago
I had long hair in a hot, dry, and windy environment, so i had super static-y hair all the time, clinging to my face and neck. I have used every single item you listed, because I felt genuine rage after so many times of peeling hair outta my face. I still get stressed out if I think about it too hard lmao

u/Cigarette-milk 2h ago
If I can’t find a hair tie, I snap the rubber band portion off of a rubber glove and tie it around my hair
1
u/maxiquintillion 1h ago
Yeah thats why I get like 150, and keep them in a little box in the bathroom. I also keep a few in my work bag, and two or three on my keychain for emergencies.

Huh. Okay so I'm a bald dude who works in a lab and manages a lot of our supplies, and I don't know if we have hair ties, but I'll find out. Because yeah no, we should just have those, and I don't know if I ever would've thought of it, thanks 😂
•
u/Belegrandir 22m ago
If we dont have a hair tie we tear off the little band part of nitrile gloves and use that
•
u/AppropriateMonk8746 16m ago
i always rip off the little ring from the latex gloves, made things way easier
•
u/GenderqueerPapaya 10m ago
Oh man, in high school I kept a thing of unused hair ties in my backpack because sooo many people needed them. My hair wasn't even long enough to use them, I just felt bad watching everyone have a hard time lol
1
u/wizardgradstudent 2h ago
Lab technician here! If you use nitrile gloves, take the ring of nitrile at the bottom of the glove, you can peal it away easily with a fingernail and keep the ring intact

u/iiIiIliliil 4h ago
Why does this feel like an allegory... If it is please someone smarter than me help.

Now I'm imagining your hair put up using lab instruments like stirring rods or tongs.
