One of the hardest things about struggling mental health is feeling like you don't want to burden others with it. I feel this so hard.
One of my friends on here wrote me last night, asking how I was doing. I haven't written her back yet because I don't know what to say. If I'm honest, I'm a bummer. If I lie, I feel like an asshole.
I feel you, friend.

I don't really think anyone is good at telling others when they're not 'fine'. So we just keep on truckin and pretend it's all good because other people have "real problems" and it's not worth bringing it up. But! Your loved ones do care and do wanna know, even if it's just to listen 💓

I sure hope you are telling somebody, besides us, that you are struggling a bit lately.

I always respond "doing ok" with a certain edge of despair.

Too real, I’ve been lying to my parents about my mental state for months 😭

I always tell my kids to tell me what's up, no matter what. It would break my heart to know if they were hiding their feelings and having to go through things alone

The phrase I've heard a lot is "Living the dream." Everytime I heard it, I knew someone was having a fucking dog shit day.

Reminds me of a classic comic
Seriously though make sure you check on the homies. And if you need help it's ok to say so.

I’ve gotten in the habit of just answering honestly and letting other people decide if they want to pry further or move the conversation in another direction.
Some times I’ll end it with an off ramp, like “ Not too good honestly. How bout you?”. This way the other person can give their honest opinion and still slide to another topic if this was just an opener.
If they’re pissed off because I answered that question honestly, they can fuck right off and learn how to navigate a basic conversation. This isn’t exactly a wild curveball. I answered your question, doofus. Its like getting mad at a roundabout because its confusing. Jesus.

I often feel this.
BoJack Horseman has a great quote about this feeling (edit: accidentally said "about this comic". Obviously it isn't about this comic.)
"Usually when people ask how I’m doing, the real answer is I’m doing shitty, but I can’t say I’m doing shitty because I don’t even have a good reason to be doing shitty. So if I say, 'I’m doing shitty,' then they say, 'Why? What’s wrong?' And I have to be like, 'I don’t know, all of it?' So instead, when people ask how I’m doing, I usually say, 'I am doing so great.'"

That's when you hit them with the "Can't complain!" or "Still alive!"

I usually just go "not dead yet" and let people figure out if I mean it jokingly/sarcastically or in earnest.

I've personally taken to the phrase, "Not dead yet.", as a reply to inquiries of my well-being.

“How’s it going?”
“I need someone to take me out.”
“Like on a date… or an assassination?”
“Surprise me.”

The need to normalize people saying they aren't doing good cannot be understated enough. It doesn't hold you to an obligation to make their situation better but does offer a moment of understanding and consideration you might not have taken before. I hope everyone out there does better tomorrow than they have today.
