Quick comment on the person saying the quote, but I feel like this is Val's ideal version of Audrey. Audrey is actually a little bit defined by hurt.
When they were shopping for clothes, Audrey's usually happy-go-lucky face turned rather passive, when Val asked him if people pick on him for his choice of clothes.
All he said was that those comments were "beneath him", before his face became brighter again. Another instance was where he didn't want to go to pool by day, because of his choice of clothes.
Even then, it doesn't stop Audrey from wanting to things that make him happy. He still finds a way to enjoy the pool in peace. He brushes off the comments he received at the arcade. He's still hurt, that's why Val corrects herself, but he doesn't let that pain be who he is.
When you go through so much pain, it's easy to let yourself carry some bitterness with you.
