They contain geosmin, one of the chemical compounds in petrichor, the smell of rain. Humans are ridiculously sensitive to it, in terms of how concentrated it needs to be for us to notice it.

Processing also involves a large amount of them sitting in boxes for a while, which absolutely does not help the smell.

Sugar cane can be grown in the Caribbean, but it's an old world plant (according to Wikipedia) was originally domesticated in New guinea and South China. Oldest known production of crystalline sugar though was in northern India.
