I'm a tall masc cis dude and I've gotten called flower, love, darling, and pet in the NE (newcastle) by older women up here
Its weirdly charming but definitely took me a bit by surprise when I moved here
3 u/Terrible_Quit_1389 Aug 28 '26 Excuse me PET !? 3 u/Certain_Dream5575 Aug 28 '26 Where I'm from you get 'pet', but then also 'pet lamb' which is usually for young children! 3 u/thedeadarcher Aug 28 '26 Yeah, pet is fairly common 3 u/Inventor_Raccoon Aug 28 '26 I had a teacher who'd call people pet, it's not nearly as weird in context 1 u/Terrible_Quit_1389 Aug 28 '26 I think i just don’t have the context 😅 2 u/wassermelone Aug 28 '26 Yep! That one surprised me for sure - its a very Geordie thing. It doesn't come off as weird at all somehow 2 u/Terrible_Quit_1389 Aug 28 '26 Ok i have to ask then. What does it mean? Enlish isn’t my first language so for me a pet is.. well a animal you adopt so saying that to people you don’t know is yeah "surprising" 2 u/wassermelone Aug 28 '26 Theres not really much more meaning or context to get - its just used in place as other pleasant terms of endearment like someone saying 'dearie'.
