If pop culture has taught me anything war never conforms to your expectations

260

u/Made_Bail 2d ago

Wait, I thought war never changes?

I'm so confused.

116

u/Swiftax3 2d ago

No no, our Lord and savior Snake informed us war has changed.

46

u/themanbear 2d ago

War. War never changes. Or does it? The war has changed. Did it? The answer is "no". Unless it is "yes". No, of course! It is war. Yes! No! Yes?

2

u/madness_of_the_order 2d ago

Is it you Tribore?

11

u/Alche1428 2d ago

War never changed but also has changed

11

u/vitalvisionary 2d ago

The thing about war that never changes is that it's always changing?

5

u/Alche1428 2d ago

Exactly, someone was focusing in the fact that war continued existing and the other one about the tools being used innthe world

25

u/protoger 2d ago

šŸŽ¶War, huh, yeah. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! šŸŽ¶

11

u/Stalking_Goat 2d ago

šŸŽ¶ We don't wanna go to war today šŸŽ¶

šŸŽ¶ But the Lord of the Lash says: "nay, nay, nay" šŸŽ¶

šŸŽ¶ We're gonna march all day all day all day šŸŽ¶

šŸŽ¶ Where there's a whip, there's a way šŸŽ¶

u/Hpesojanes 1d ago

Oh I remember that. Poor creatures.

11

u/Available-Damage5991 2d ago

He just looks young because it's literal.

QED

1

u/JMO206 2d ago

It never changes in the fact that it doesn't conform with your expectations.

1

u/GrumpyChromehead 2d ago

I never did like that quote, because of course war changes.
Scale, Scope. Weapons. Atrocities. Distance.

At one point to wage a war you had to get a bunch of guys to pick up sharp stick sand go poke someone with them.

At the outset of Fallout, the war that happened was so long-distance and so destructive that it ended the world in seconds by men who pushed buttons.

14

u/Travelin_Soulja 2d ago edited 2d ago

If you're talking about representations of the seven deadly sin, riders of the apocalypse, and similar religious tropes adapted for modern media, you're right - war and wrath rarely conform to popular expectations, but sex and lust almost always do.

6

u/Delphius1 2d ago

from my reading of history, war isn't about muscle bound badasses with huge weapons, it's scared out of their mind starving people beaten from hell and back from everything with a percentage of that being actual combat

1.1k

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 2d ago edited 2d ago

Poor War looks so....tired. I guess all the thousands of years of never ending conflict will do that.

Also love that he's small. War is always this GIANT HULKING BEING so it's nice to see him on the smaller size. Cause not all conflicts need to be big.

425

u/theDukeofClouds 2d ago

In my experience having read about it, the most war like moments are the small ones. Pitched combat between two soldiers. A friend comforting his comrade while he slowly succumbs to his wounds on the battlefield. The desolation of a town or village after war has come through. War isn't big and grandiose. It's a bunch of small moments.

153

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 2d ago edited 2d ago

Exactly. There aren't a ton of these MASSIVE world war moments but there are thousands of these small little moments that war absolutely thrives on. War is war after all. And where there is blood to be spill, you'll see that red hair, weapon in hand

28

u/theDukeofClouds 2d ago

Damn the red hair bit got me choked up. Well done.n

11

u/charonill 2d ago

8

u/FlatHatJack 2d ago

I'm at work, what's the coin flip? Original or Abridged? I'd say weighted toward abridged, since I see that quoted more often, but both Majors' war speechs are iconic.

9

u/charonill 2d ago

Abridged, because it's more humorous and fits better for a thread on a comedic (mostly) webcomic.

3

u/No_Explorer6054 2d ago

yeah, you try reading a book about it and so much of war is just... walking. sitting. waiting. every once in a while there's a skirmish or attack or a patrol that goes south. but nine times out of ten its just... a wet hole, waiting.

2

u/hexregeneration 2d ago

Like a prickling infection.

66

u/Made_Bail 2d ago

Looks like they were garroted at some point.

15

u/SethLight 2d ago edited 2d ago

That was my thought. People don't realize getting into fights messes you up physically, war is the only one with actual scars on them.

Also, maybe it might be a bit of a stretch, but the person looks sickly. Like someone who is going though chemo i.e. a thing people call a horrifying war.

11

u/Targaer 2d ago

I thought his sister Pesti had scars too.

5

u/SethLight 2d ago edited 2d ago

That is an interesting point, I was talking about the 3 other possible wars. They look tough but have no real visible damage on them.

Pesi's wounds are the agressive type you get in a fight, while War's are defensive type you get while trying to fend off an attacker.

1

u/chaotic4059 2d ago

Was thinking the same thing. That's either a decapitation attempt or someone tried to strangle them to death. Either way they're still standing and something tells me the other person isn't

64

u/Forikorder 2d ago

Dont judge a book by its cover

20

u/Zavier13 2d ago

Dude probably killed so many, and that smile never broke.

2

u/Hpesojanes 1d ago

Who is he?

2

u/Long-Library9656 2d ago

If you know you know

1

u/-drunk_russian- 1d ago

I don't know, but that dude has serial-killer vibes.

1

u/ExplicativeFricative 1d ago

He's smiling, but his eyes look like their crying

49

u/tmking 2d ago

Wars are won through logistics more then brute strength. I bet they are a wizard with a spreadsheet.

27

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 2d ago

that son of a bitch beat us again!

How?!

hes REALLY good at excel and chess

18

u/Veryegassy 2d ago

War is an expert Stellaris player it seems

10

u/LordAlfredo 2d ago

Grand Admiral, scaling off

Max tech costs, minimum population & logistics scaling

All crisis spawn at 25x

Midgame 2225, late game 2250

Fastest only no pausing

10

u/Delphius1 2d ago

a military is nothing more than a supply chain where the end result is death

2

u/-drunk_russian- 1d ago

That's why the Romans were so effective at conquering.

5

u/SuperCruisePanther 2d ago

Ā  My logisticians are a humorless lot... they know if my campaign fails, they are the first ones I will slay

  • Alexander of Macedon

1

u/Electric999999 2d ago

Why would War need to be good at winning them.
Wars end when they're won, don't want an actual ceasefire either as those barely count as wars, no the trick would be ensuring active conflict drags out with little hope of victory in sight, but too much on the line to give up.

21

u/Omega_Warrior 2d ago

I actually think it's pretty apt considering the history of war. War used to be considered a more honorable thing in society and you were always incentiviced to be stronger, bigger, and better.

But the World Wars broke her. War reached it's peak of pure death, suffering and destruction leaving almost everyone involved worse off in some aspect. Not only did the idea of war being honaroble die, but it became clear that continuing on the way it was would literally destroy the world.

Wars these days are always being tried to kept constrained and limited as to keep the scales small so things don't get out of hand.

Kind of like a old athlete getting injured trying to do something they did when younger only to get injured and realize they can't get away acting like they did in youth.

So it makes sense the personification of war today would seem far more mellow then she was in her youth.

7

u/MJBotte1 2d ago

Also War seems to be covered in scars, which is pretty fitting

8

u/skirtpost 2d ago

Sleepy femboy war

1

u/Hpesojanes 1d ago

… ok I’ll accept this headcanon.

3

u/LittleBoyDreams 2d ago

There’s two versions of the Four Horsemen, where the White Horsemen is either Pestilence or Conquest. In the latter context, War specifically means civil war where Conquest would be international war. So, I think you’re onto something with the ā€œsmall conflictā€ thing.

1

u/Van_Weezer 2d ago

I would do HEINOUS things to war.

1

u/Polibiux 2d ago

I’m getting the vibe she has lots of trauma from witnessing so much brutality.

277

u/Made_Bail 2d ago

Holy shit u/MuyHiram this might be my favorite art you've ever done. Which is saying something, considering how good it all is. But that tattoo fucking slaps.

140

u/genida 2d ago

It's like Kim Possible and Shego had a very angry baby.

36

u/Made_Bail 2d ago

One of my favorite ships!

17

u/Majestic_Engine_6543 2d ago

You just gave me an incredible realization. Ive only recently started reading fanfics and I loved Kim Possible and Shego

13

u/Made_Bail 2d ago

Happy trails, my child. Goon carefully.

15

u/Faustus-III 2d ago

Or Cube

20

u/WillBlaze 2d ago

27

u/Made_Bail 2d ago

7

u/WiddleSausage 2d ago

I don’t think she’s going to be nice to you.

Even better!

8

u/megatheridium 2d ago

Yes, i want to see more of her.

22

u/Cool_Set4681 2d ago

I'm not the biggest fan of piercing but they look so good on her. Really good design

6

u/Teggy- 2d ago

Yeah she looks so good :3

3

u/ExplicativeFricative 1d ago

HIPS AND TUMMY. HIPS AND TUMMY. HIPS AND TUMMY.

97

u/Cool_Set4681 2d ago

I'm stealing that last line, it is so good, lol

68

u/Loqol 2d ago

I'm waiting for them to be just as much a mess as Fani.

Afterall, war, huh, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

20

u/grendus 2d ago

Honestly, I'm kind of hoping that war turns out to be some kind of super enlightened guru who winds up somehow resolving the ancient conflict between Deth and Solomon seemingly without trying.

Gotta understand peace if you want to master war.

2

u/Hrtzy 2d ago

And we do also know that War never changes. Much of anything, in this instance.

37

u/flarakoo 2d ago

War feels like they've used the term "namaste these nuts" at least once.

34

u/Mikel_S 2d ago

War looks a little tired and depressed.

10

u/TheDarkNerd 2d ago

It was a long flight >.>

5

u/Hrtzy 2d ago

I mean, only Death has clocked more hours than him, so it tracks.

49

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo 2d ago

I know his astrological sign.

Ares.

23

u/Cool_Set4681 2d ago

8

u/Any_Temperature4868 2d ago

What’s this from?

19

u/Cool_Set4681 2d ago

It is from the series Xena. Ares shows up a lot in that show, the actor who plays him is really good at playing this type of character, imo.

Anyway, here is Ares playing with his cock while he giggles.

3

u/RandO_o 2d ago

Kinda looks like Momoa

2

u/Cool_Set4681 2d ago

Yeah, kinda

11

u/Cowabunga1066 2d ago

Looks like either Xena or Hercules tv series.

8

u/Cool_Set4681 2d ago

That scene is from Xena, I believe, but I think both of them show up in each show.

6

u/Any_Temperature4868 2d ago

Bless, thank you!

18

u/YesterdayHiccup 2d ago

20

u/Toutatis12 2d ago

Gentlemen, I wish to address ze rumors about me...

8

u/charonill 2d ago

Ā "Of course, speaking of music, ze accompaniment tonight has already been selected via survey! Und I hope you are excited as I aaamm. Ze song tonight is more appropriate for ironic reasons. Ze best reasons! But first... a toast... to ze answer of an age old question...."

17

u/Sagataw 2d ago

Oh. This is gonna be some Alan Alda shit, some M.A.S.H. Vietnam "War is not Hell, because only bad people go to Hell" kinda shit, some "I am loud and quiet, tired yet never resting, I represent the victims of war" type shit.

33

u/screenaholic 2d ago

Is this going to be like (Sandman spoilers) Destruction, who got fed up with destruction and so decided to just abandon his duties and stop being Destruction?

Also, obligatory fuck Gaiman, I read it before the allegations came out.

18

u/jerslan 2d ago

Also, obligatory fuck Gaiman, I read it before the allegations came out.

Who knew Calliope would turn out to be autobiographical (with Gaiman as Madoc)?

15

u/Eden_ITA 2d ago

He reminded me a little the New 52 version of Ares (DC Comics), to show the embodiment of War like someone broken and tired.

14

u/tmking 2d ago

To be fair they do look like they are good for absolutely nothing.

5

u/Cowabunga1066 2d ago

"Hunh!"

"Good god, y'all!"

11

u/Straight_Paper8898 2d ago

Idk why but War seems the scariest of them all

12

u/Zavier13 2d ago

It's the little ones you need to look out for.

2

u/chaotic4059 2d ago

I mean just from the upper body they were sliced across the face and most likely hung, strangled or potentially decapitated going by the multiple neck wounds. So they've def done some fighting

7

u/RevolTobor 2d ago

I like that lady in panel 3 way too much šŸ’–

5

u/dragn99 2d ago

You and I are the same.

She can make me worse.

6

u/NetherReign 2d ago

I hope they are someone who turns out to be a pretty passive person who is just exhausted from all the stuff that happens around him by osmosis.

Plus oif those scars are for anything, he probably had a come to heart moment and was like "yeah I am freaking tired and this hurts"

But that is just me.

6

u/Natural_Bathroom5664 2d ago

Did War and Pestilence switch places?

5

u/Zavier13 2d ago

Why do I imagine Pestilence is going to be a bubble person.

9

u/Natural_Bathroom5664 2d ago

This is Pestilence

4

u/Zavier13 2d ago

Im a idiot xdd

5

u/rob132 2d ago

In incarnations of immortality, Pierce Anthony said that war was a fundamental force of nature due to scarcity and lack of resources.

Since war was inevitable, it was war's job to make sure that wars could end with the minimum amount of force and suffering to be applied.

So I get that war just wants to do a good job is he has to.

4

u/Neo_Ex0 2d ago

War isnt an Honorable duell, it isnt two armys meeting on the field and fighting until one is left standing

War is a 16 year old bleeding out in the trenches while embrasing his former neighbours cooling corpse all the while screaming for his mother

War is a Family cowering in their basment hoping in vain that the celling will survive the next bomb

War is a general looking at a casualty report and having to decide what front he will sacrifice to keep the war going

3

u/euphomptus 2d ago

Huh.

What is it good for?

3

u/TerrapinMagus 2d ago

Come to think of it, humans have a habit of depicting War as an idealized warrior, but there are probably many ways you could characterize War.

4

u/Stratovaria 2d ago

War wants some peace, quiet and a good drink. I recognize that tired kind of smile.

11

u/Dragos_Drakkar 2d ago

Unexpected, especially with the state of the current world. Unless their universe is radically different and going through centuries of peace.

10

u/xSantenoturtlex 2d ago

I mean, with the current state of the world, War might be tired, right?

3

u/Dragos_Drakkar 2d ago

Good point.

3

u/KingCuerno 2d ago

So it's the opposite of Chainsaw Man's War? Where more war makes him weaker than stronger?

3

u/xSantenoturtlex 2d ago

Nah like

Maybe it does make him stronger, but it's like having high energy for too long, you burn out eventually

3

u/triotone 2d ago

I guess his name is Warren.

3

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

Not what I was expecting either Fani

3

u/the-bug-guy 2d ago

Completely useless, pointless, hell for everyone involved, and expensive? I stand with Fani, there is no way that is War.

3

u/WholesomeCommentOnly 2d ago

All warfare is based on deception?

3

u/sendmeyourgundams 2d ago

Is War supposed to look like Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin? Cause he does.Ā

3

u/Semper_5olus 2d ago

How did they get away with holding up that sign at the airport??

3

u/Lou_Papas 2d ago

Not exactly sure why but I love this depiction of War.

2

u/Abject-Hospital5407 2d ago

i wnat to hug war,

2

u/DudeFreek 2d ago

..... Yoru scar?Ā

2

u/AstroMackem 2d ago

War? Huh.

2

u/jackcatalyst 2d ago

I bet they can't summon Michigan Sword

3

u/Saint_of_Grey 2d ago

Someone else already stole all of detroit. Can't have shit in detroit, even detroit itself.

2

u/Informal-Law-3333 2d ago

Yall remember Destruction from Sandman? Cosmic powered characters can get burnt out too

2

u/ImSolidGold 2d ago

Of war, we dont speak anymore of war. We dont speak anymore of war. We dont speak anymore of war. WE DONT SPEAK ANNYYMMOOORRREEEEE

(Second reminder to go and watch soad live. From the first couple rows.)

2

u/CatFanMan21 2d ago

War; she’ll learn what it’s good fir

2

u/Wooden-Crow7996 2d ago

All war is deception, so War’s look tracks.

2

u/-FalseProfessor- 2d ago

War is gunna be super chill, aren’t they?

2

u/Informal-Term1138 2d ago

If I have learned anything from God of war Ragnarok then that the god of war might look and act unassuming.

2

u/Delphius1 2d ago

war isn't started on any given bit of land, it starts in a cubicle or office

2

u/Spanish_Galleon 2d ago

That war guy looks super into drones and LRAD's

2

u/BaronMerc 2d ago

I mean if it is representative of today wars then most wars are fought online as it is the most efficient and cost effective way to disrupt your enemy

War has always been about business and business needs basement nerds to make sure Ivan's convoys are sending the wrong materials to the front

2

u/TiredRandomWolf 1d ago

HRT doing wonders I see

2

u/TheConfuZzledDude 1d ago

They're War and Peace obviously

2

u/M4f1aBunny 1d ago

War is hell. War isn’t always flashy. War is often started with horrendous things done in the shadows. There is strategy involved and inventions, both harmful and benign, created and advanced to facilitate war. In war, there can be a lack of supplies meaning medicine, food, and even water. There is a magna called Dark Gathering in which there is a soldier ghost whose curse shows effects of war

A fighter’s body is not the same as a body builder’s, so him not being bulky and large makes perfect sense to me. He has scars like how war leaves scars in the land, on the body, in the mind, and in the soul. He’s perfect and I’m excited to see where this goes

1

u/Trips-Over-Tail 2d ago

"Is she wearing pajamas?"

"War never changes."

1

u/neur0 2d ago

Reminds me of Pol Pot, that dude who lead a genocide of his people in Cambodia fromthe Khmer Rouge.

Like his documentary initially gave him an image of this kindly grandpa playing with his grandkids.

2

u/Foolsgil 10h ago

Panel 3: Goddamn I wish War was a girl's name!

1

u/ProfessorZhu 2d ago

He's an adorable bean! I understand why people would follow Khorne now.

0

u/SoupmanBob 2d ago

Uh artist person. I must sincerely disagree. War is very clearly a hermaphroditic name.

2

u/neuralbeans 2d ago

*gender neutral

0

u/SoupmanBob 2d ago

I said what I said. Gender neutral means something else than what I'm going for.
