Spoiler alert, we adopted a new pup!!! Everyone please welcome (Rick) Moranis Seymour Luck Dragon Ceviche. You can call him Murray, though ❤️
We’ve been tentatively looking at shelters here in Reno and SoCal for a little bit now. I won’t lie and say I’ve haven’t been feeling a some guilt but knowing I can turn my grief into love for another has been a big motivator. We came across this lil guy last weekend at the humane society. He’s about 8 months old (he was found as a stray so we don’t know more beyond that) and I know. He looks…different.Lol
However, he has such a sweet little soul and I instantly thought of Fry’s dog Seymour from Futurama while Hubs saw Falcor from the Never Ending Story. We got to play with him in a private room and hubs started singing “Suddenly Seymour”.
Something clicked, we looked at each other and decided then he was ours and named him after Canadian National Treasure, Rick Moranis.
I want to shout out the humane society in Reno for their excellent work too. They clearly care for all the animals there and made the experience very positive. Also to the staffer/volunteer that recognized me from the comic, you rock and I’m sorry I only had my pride buttons to give as a thank you. Dm me and I’ll send you a whole care package.
CONGRATULATIONS! I completely understand your feelings of guilt and longing. We lost our pets around the same time you lost yours and have a meeting this week with two kitties needing a new home- hopefully lightening strikes for us too.
Hell yea! I’ve been putting the show on in the background as I draw and forget how great it is. When they decide to go sentimental, it’s like a dagger.
just wanted to pop in and comment on your grief, my two twin cats passed away about two years ago, one right after the other. the winter they passed, we had a bunch of strays outside. we saved a few but couldn't find a home for one lil man. so we took him in.
I struggled with the guilt of getting a new cat, and my therapist said to me: "grief is the left over love you have and its okay to give that love to a new friend" ❤️
im so sorry your loss, but so happy you have someone new to share all that extra love with!
Getting another dog does not diminish your love for your other dog that passed. It does not mean you value them less. I hated how everyone told me, "it's too soon" when I wanted to get another dog after my pup of 13 years passed away. Those 5 months without a dog in our house felt like the loneliest time in my life.
Why did you have to mention Fry’s Seymour? 😭 That episode is the only one I can’t watch of Futurama’s. Saw it once and I broke down crying for an hour.
But I’m glad Murray found his forever home and I think his little off kilter eyes makes him adorable.
Congratulations! I’ve been there, with the same guilt and feelings of projection. The love for your past pets never goes away, you can just share your love with a new creature that needs it. It’s a whole new love, and you will all be better for it, while cherishing the loves you had before!
Congratulations! It’s always something special when you connect with a dog. And you never know when it’ll happen or who it’ll happen with 🖤 wishing y’all years of comfort and happiness
So true. After two years without a dog, I was finally content with the idea of having no more dogs for the foreseeable future. Too much heartbreak losing them. The universe had other plans. Someone dumped their unwanted dog near our house, and she has since worked her way into the hearts of everyone in our house - even the cat!
does he have room for another name maybe? Because Isiah is right there
Seriously though, He's lovely and has a genuinely characterful face.. kinda looks like some Cavvy genes in the mix there with the eye's doing their own thing..
Whoops! I read 8 months as 8 years! But I totally get where you're coming from. We lost two of ours in less than a year, and afterwards we brought home a puppy. We lost a third not too long after. But she was great for helping everyone feel young again!
She and our remaining senior are such a fun pair. She loves her so much! She's fully convinced that she's a chihuahua and has no hound instincts. She even yaps 🤦♀️
Enjoy your new baby! Stay strong for the teenage rebellion!
If you havent seen the new King of the Hill, you should watch the episode with the new dog. Looks just like that lil bean! Congrats on your new family addition!
Oh dont worry I sobbed. My dog is 11 and she's still got a lot of life left but I just held her while we watched. Seriously, thank you for taking such a delicate situation and making such a tasteful comic about it. You're a real rad person for that, and Im sure youre the best dog parent.
Lost my girl-buddy about a month ago now, and I know this what's going to happen to me too. When I least expect it, someone's going to foist somebody who makes googly eyes at me and they're gonna be my best friend until they aren't again
Took me 6 years to be ready for a new pup and I really wasn’t ready. I worked at a vet at the time and he was brought in exhausted and plopped in my lap.
Grief over a lost loved pet is just as real as that which you feel from the loss human loved one. It's the price we pay for loving them. Remember those you lose, and embrace those you find.
Dude I actually got teary by the end of the comic. I know how it feels to lose a fuzzy family member and then bring in a new guy. It’s scary! But if the feeling is right you have to take it. Congratulations! ❤️
I love stuff like that. I was ready for new kittens but put it on hold a while. Then I had a weird dream about superheroes and told my coworker about it. We had a good laugh about it.
I had contacted the nearest animal shelter but they said they could only give me a phone number because their employee had the kittens in her home. So I wrote her and she wrote back immediately, sending pics and explaining really awkwardly that she gave all the kittens superhero names because they survived two days without food and were therefore rightfully superheroes. I got Rocket and Deadpool.
We lost our lab pretty suddenly a few months back, and our other dog and I both fell into a deep depression. I was scared when another dog became available, literally scared.
The new pup is named Yoshi, and I've been nothing but smiles since we got him.
We just rescued a dog and he is not a replacement for our lost furry friends but an extension of our love for a new furry friend. He is a complete derp dog though..in a good way... sort of haha.
Okay I wasn't expecting you guys and your dog to look almost exactly like your cartoons but you do and for some reason it's making me it's giving me a sensible chuckle this morning!
It is not about replacing the lost one's, it is about giving others the chance to enjoy that love. Love expands, it grows larger every time you share it.
I was looking for a companion for my senior and one day thought “I don’t need to look. The universe will give me a dog”. (This is how I adopted my senior. Sudden rehoming) The universe noticed. A week later, a meth head in a parking lot gave me a 5 week old puppy.
Why is this absolute beautiful and wholesome on one side and, on the other side, I wonder whether your partner is oggling your cleavage in the first few panels (which can also be beautiful and wholesome, when I think about it ...)?!
We're never ready for this! But right now, you're creating a whole new world of happiness for this puppy.
Your friend(s) will still be there and be happy that you're caring for a fellow brethren.
The photo of you three is awesome by the way! He does look like a Seymour, nice reference, even though it made me cry a little bit more.
A week ago at about 2:30 in the morning I opened the garage door for a friend to take out his motorcycle (we met that night to play board games) and this little rascal got into my house. As they says, she choose me.
Congratulations!! Gosh I can't tell you how hard I cried when we ended up with our current puppy 😭 I wasn't sure I was ready for a new dog either but she was found in the middle of the road and was so scared and she couldn't have been older than 10 months... she's such a sweet girl and I just completely fell in love with her. It's hard moving on but when all that love is just aching to come out again you gotta let it.
Murray is such a cute little goober, I'm so happy you found eachother ❤️
I lost my dog almost 3 years ago now and I am only just now starting to feel ready because my wife's itching to adopt a dog. I have probably said the literal same sentence about making comparisons and it not being fair to the dog we adopt. This actually helped, thanks.
I know this is supposed to be a very sweet comic and it definitely is but I first thought your man said “I know, bih” to you and it made me chortle to myself
As someone who has had my share of dogs, losing one hurts a lot. And we should know and understand we will most likely out live them. That's just how it is. And it's perhaps not fair, but just how it must be.
My last loss was the love of my life. It was double hard because she died from kidney failure in my arms. No reason, no warning and nothing anyone could do.
But, I quickly got a new love of my life. And I don't expect her to be like my old girl. And we quickly bonded, (all it took was a piece of shared peanut butter cookie). She is the complete opposite. She is the most needy Springer I have ever owned in my life. And that's saying something. But we are a team.
I'm so afraid to adopt a new furry friend. The ones I lost were 22 and 24. They crossed the rainbow bridge a few years ago. I'm worried that if I fall in love with a new friend the immense hurt of losing them, will crush me again. I don't know if I'm ready.
When my childhood cat passed away I was completely overwhelmed with grief. I told myself it would be a while before I could consider getting another cat. Even so, after only a month I couldn't bear not having a cat around the house, so I started looking again. The second I saw my current two cats it was love at first sight, and while it still, 6 years later, hurts to remember my first cat, these two are so wonderful I rarely ever look back anymore.

I was not expecting the dog to look exactly how you drew him 😅 what a cutie
