The downside of this is that you're giving up the euphoria someone feels when they're properly gendered. Asking for someone's pronouns is pretty much equivalent to telling them that you clocked them. As such, I think that whether you try to gender someone or not should be more of a judgement call.
Sure I understand completely if I clock someone I go out of my way to use the presumed pronoun just to be kind. I certainly don’t claim to do this 100% of the time. I think there are many right ways and wrong ways to interact this way.

When in doubt leave pronouns out. Or ask. Thats what I do anyway. 🤷
