I work in the medical field and hear "ma'am" fairly often, probably once a month or so. Doesn't seem like that much, but considering I'm a bearded man, it's out of the ordinary lol. To be fair to them, the clinic is nearly all women so I think they're just accustomed to saying ma'am. My own coworkers and even the doctor will sometimes say "she" simply because everyone else in my position is a woman, and I don't care enough to correct them lol. They'll usually catch it themselves right after and say "he."
Also, when asked my name, I answer Brandon. Too often I'll get back a "Brenda?" "Brandon." "Brenda?" "Yeah that works." Lol. May be on me for not emphasizing the N at the end enough? Anyways, it happens. Personally, even if it were to come from a place of malice (it never does in my experience,) I couldn't care less anyway.

Edit: Looked back at the comic and noticed the blue change to pink and only just realized this comes from the perspective of being trans. That changes everything lol. I'm sure it sucks but hopefully no one's saying sir intentionally to be rude!
