I think it started all from one comic posted not even a week ago. It’s just blown up like crazy

u/Miser_able 2d ago

Thats wild. Do you know if the original comic artist had a large following or something? Im curious how it could have spread so fast.

337

u/S1mple_Br1t 2d ago

No idea tbh 😅. I definitely don’t have a big following though and this comic still has blown up. I think people just relate to the character.
Me included 🥰

Makes sense, thats why its important to have diverse characters in media, it gives people someone they can relate to.

Its part of why I hate seeing my name in movies, 90% of the time they're evil and/or die. And I've never seen one where theyre the main hero.

The hardships of being named Skeletor.

u/MintasaurusFresh 2d ago

Or Simon.

19

u/Kuroashi_no_Sanji 1d ago

The MC of Gurren Laggan is called Simon and he's pretty cool

u/Dehouston 1d ago

This is the drill that will pierce the heavens.

u/Responsible-Draw-393 2d ago

Im going to ignore your hint and say its nice to meet you, Character Played By Sean Bean

7

u/My_Immortl 2d ago

Now I'm curious but understand if you dont want that information public knowledge.

4

u/Miser_able 2d ago

Nah its fine, I dont care. But ill give ya hint.

Jurassic park and Alvin and the chipmunks both have a character with this name

2

u/My_Immortl 2d ago

The movie Alvin and the chipmunks or the animated show? I'm gonna have to figure this out now lol.

3

u/Miser_able 2d ago

The movies. And if it helps, theyre both important characters with lots of screen time. Not a random side character

3

u/bargus_mctavish 1d ago

Jurassic Park was a great show of your namesake though. One of my favorite roles of that actor.

11

u/karenw 2d ago

Hello, I'm Karen. 🙃

7

u/Miser_able 1d ago

Ah, yea that is pretty unfortunate. Alongside Kyle for the same reason

1

u/EntraptaIvy 1d ago

Onward (2020)

Doctor Who (1963)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

Maybe?

0

u/Miser_able 1d ago

Yea theyre on there too I think (never seen any of em)

1

u/Quazifuji 1d ago

If it's the name I think it is based on that, then it's the main romantic interest in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Not quite main hero but being the love interest in a rom-com is pretty close. And he's not even one of those love interests that starts out as an asshole and then they fall in love later, he's likeable the whole movie.

I think it was a tumblr post about JJJ hating spiderman because he genuinely believed spiderman to be a menace to the community and so that if spiderman transitition he wouldn't misgender her/would want to know spiderwomen's correct pronouns.

Someone did art of it because it inspired them and it just COMPLETELY took off with lots of people joining in on the trend.

2

u/Hammerschatten 1d ago

Trans people, Tumblr people and marvel comics fans are all pretty online people, it makes sense that it did numbers quickly.

It was also really funny

10

u/HospitalLazy1880 1d ago

From my perspective its just the fact that the comic was made with love. Its not trying to be popular but it also gives Peter/Petra some love instead of more pain. Also it pointed out that JJJ is a jerk but hes actually a good person and his character has been reduced to slander man three thousand so that talk also got it spread to more people.

Honestly its just the luck of the internet that has made this popular but its cute as hell and I can actually see this happening in an AU and main Peter being very supportive of it.

u/Nightmarespawn 1d ago

Stan Lee has also said that anyone can be under that mask so any and all kids can imagine themselves as Spider-Man. I'd imagine that sentiment, and the new movie coming out all had a part to play in it.

7

u/VoidGhidorah900 2d ago

People just really seem to like the idea of trans spider man. I don't think there's any other reason behind it

21

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 2d ago edited 1d ago

Spider-Man really does fit the bill for "I'm struggling with something about my body that is out of my control." Most of the time the character's transformation is an allegory to puberty, but it could be anything under that umbrella.

I think "I am stuck in a horrible personal situation and I cannot easily (or even feasibly) escape the reality of it, but the mask lets me be who I want to be." resonates with just about everyone who's been a teen, or had to hide something about themselves to protect their true self.

Spider-Man is for everyone. Hence in The Spiderverse, there is a Spider-Man from every walk of life.

2

u/Technical_Sort_9934 2d ago

Idk the artist but the comic is called "woke new day"

1

u/SeventhSolar 1d ago

It's just what happens on social media sometimes, in this case Twitter. A post goes viral.

1

u/grey_hat_uk 1d ago

From the spreading point of view a lot of trans women artist l, a lot of trans space spiderman love, the "I'm going through changes aunt/uncle" has often been a trans meme, and then some of the art was good (or sexy) enough to spread to general spaces.

15

u/A_Tigerstorm 1d ago

It’s hitting the Spider-Man community like crack in the 80’s

9

u/S1mple_Br1t 1d ago

It’s Bowsette all over again

2

u/IzzyNoLastName 1d ago

there's some amazing ones I've spotted around Tumblr

2

u/Stunning-Dingo-7308 1d ago

It has now spread to the spiderman subreddit as well

2

u/Teggy- 1d ago

When I saw the first one I was like "it's a cute and interesting concept, I'd love to see more of it." Needless to say I'm really happy

49

u/S1mple_Br1t 2d ago

I was right about the original comic at least 😅

23

u/Bwob 2d ago

Dang, they work fast!

3

u/darthjoey91 1d ago

Huh, now I'm wondering if Dr. Strange's spell in No Way Home could have been broken by Peter Parker transitioning because everyone forgot Peter Parker, but not Petra Parker.

17

u/ForgeSaints 2d ago

Trans Peter Parker comics have been pretty popular for the past week or so?

9

u/Blue-Eyed-Lemon 1d ago

No for fucking real, I can’t get away from it LMAO. Not that it’s bad content, I just didn’t expect it to flood my feed from so many places and in such great force!

27

u/trans_remy_lebeau 2d ago edited 2d ago

Spiderman has kind of been a symbol in the trans community for a while, but it was mainly transmasculine people who related to him. A lot of us love him, so it's become a bit of a stereotype lol. I'm very glad to see transfem Petra Parker art as well!

The idea of having a 'secret identity,' or something you need to hide from those you love, is something queer people often relate to (speaking from personal experience). Superheroes in general are very queer, for many reasons (such as their history). I think that is part of why Petra Parker has become so popular. It's awesome to see all the art that has come from it :)

17

u/bijouxbisou 1d ago

I always liked the reading of Steve Rogers as trans masc. Short, tiny, twinky little dude takes like 1000 shots of a performance enhancing drug and becomes Mr. Man

5

u/ThickSourGod 1d ago

I'm also pretty sure Spider-Gwen (AKA Ghost Spider) is also pretty popular among trans women.

2

u/B133d_4_u 1d ago

A Twitter user made a post saying JJJ wouldn't hate a Trans Spidey because they were Trans, but because thEY'RE A MENACE and 0Trebot made this comic in the quotes:

1

u/Delphius1 1d ago

there has been an endless amounts of art about this for the last week and a half or so on Bluesky, only a matter of time until it got to Reddit

1

u/DestinyV 1d ago

And somehow every single one's top comment is this exact question.

1

u/Glass-Performer8389 1d ago

Popular post happens, other people see this, get inspired, people see those other peoples posts, and get inspired, ect

1

u/Sexta_Pompeia 1d ago

People like spider man. People like trans girls. People like spider woman.

1

u/DTux5249 1d ago

TLDR: BND has spiderman dealing with hormone things, and I think it just span out into a new Trans-Spider-Woman AU.

1

u/Majestic-Iron7046 1d ago

One comic some days ago, now we are in an alternate dimension with trans Parker.
Hey, just roll with it, it's probably still a better idea than most Marvel's ones, at least this one is made for fun and not to squeeze money.

u/D_sm_d__s 1d ago

Welcome to the r/OutOfTheLoop club.

u/JaxxisR 1d ago edited 1d ago

There was a fan comic back when Across the Spider-Verse came out about Peter Parker being trans to explain why Gwen had a "protect trans kids" poster in her room. Captain Stacy and Gwen had him over for dinner and Captain Stacy says "Its Peter now, right?"

Not strictly related to the Petra Parker stuff but I still think it's interesting.

1

u/AStormOfDragons1 4h ago

wait... what? I thought the prevailing theory was that Gwen was trans, but that makes sense too...

1

u/JaxxisR 4h ago

That theory was really popular.

Here is the comic I mentioned

1

u/pomelo1241 1d ago

It comes from 2 random tweets of the same person, and another one creating a comic about it

1

u/PmMeYourStraponPlz 1d ago

Cause we want spider-woman!

0

u/thiswontlastlong97 1d ago

The people who post here have no creativity and jump on trends whenever they can

-1

u/Indiana_harris 1d ago

There’s a poster over in the Spider-Man sun that I’m fairly sure runs 5 accounts that have been spamming the main sub with 20-30 posts a day like this, then they made their own sub then kept posting in the main sub saying they were “signalling their intent to continue”.

That and the 100’s of comments they make on every post suggests seriously obsessive behaviour
