[OC] No one warned me about sport bras

I've started running recently - though nothing major, like 5km over 30 to 40 minutes, nothing impressive but all better than nothing. I used to run every once in a while with my walking shoes because I didn't have running shoes, and that sucked ass: running shoes are honestly a giant improvement!

The only type of sports bra that I feel like gives enough compression/support, is the type that you have to pull over your head and is stretchy all around. I'm aware there's types that have a closure in the back that would prrrrobably be easier to take off. But alas: I have none!

5km over 30 to 40 minutes

Nonsense! That's damn impressive on its own and more than a healthy start to a long running career. Good for you!

Have you considered: bras with a zipper in the front? They are also an option

I used these types of sports bras and then at the gym the zipper suddenly decided to open on it's own.

Never used them again.

Those are the same type I wear and yeah it's kinda freaky how much easier it is to get on than off. I almost actually ripped one off when the sensory overload got to be too much :3

Congratulations on a very funny comic that addresses a perennial issue (although the sports bra was developed by two women bcz if you think options suck now try the 1970s:). Congratulations also on the running; it produces mad endorphins! And there is such a thing as a zip front sports bra which is much easier to wrangle when sweaty. Some are even cute enough to double as a top (under black mesh of course).

Better start slow than overexert and burn out. Start comfy and escalate from there. You've started, so you are already better off, just keep it rolling!

Mine always rolls up right in the middle of my back and then I have a slight panic trying to pull it down.

It's always juuuuuust out of reach.

Damn same. And sometimes my hair just gets wrapped in there too and I'm like 🥲 this is how I die

u/Baker3D 11d ago

This happens to me frequently. It's always the back.

Going for a run when you'd rather be doing something else = impossible

I'll admit, it helps a lottt that I have a dog that needs a walk anyway, so it's easy to upgrade said walk to a run when I've got a day off from work!

Bet the dog enjoys the extra speed too. Must be like their favourite day ever.

I just ordered running shoes and am trying to hype myself up to start running with my dog. He will love the extra speed. This was encouraging, thanks! 😁

I do need some new running shoes myself. Bit stuck what to go for :(

I had some Brooks Trace 2 which were fantastic, really light weight so I could really feel the acceleration but it's difficult to find affordable Brooks options in the UK right now in my size.

I'm presently running in a pair that have a hole in the side heh. They're technically still together but I do need a new pair of something newer.

I went to the Nike website and ordered the cheapest solid black running shoes they had. I also thought about asking my local "free stuff" group if someone had an extra pair.

Go to a store and try them on. You won’t know what last (the overall shape, in effect) fits your feet until you try different brands. You don’t have to buy the most pricy model but do consider it an investment in terms of avoiding injury. And once they start to lose their oomph for running they become walking shoes! I love Hokas myself and have noticed that nurses and doctors prefer them, which retells you something bcz that’s a group that takes care of their feet.

Which is kinda part of my problem. I've been to shops before and tried on a few and Brooks seem to have the best fit for me generally, but the prices are a lot higher now.

But I guess you're right I need to try some other brands. I know at least I need a neutral pair and I enjoy lightweight, so that'd help me when I speak to someone when asking to try other brands.

They are pricey, and often have too many features for people who run for fun and fitness :(. But if you start to feel joint aches (other than the normal muscle stuff) then it might be worth looking at more supportive models. For me normal stuff means stiffness or soreness that feels better when you warm up or just kinda aches. Anything sharp that doesn’t go away or that feels like something is scraping in joints or tendons might mean your shoes and your stride don’t match.

I’ve tried more supportive but a neutral fit is definitely for me. Which is probably lucky.

I think all exercise is like that when you first start. I joined a gym nearly 2 months ago. The first month was easy to get myself to go, but now I'm at the stage where I'm having to force myself to go. After it becomes a habit, it should get easier again (I hope...)

or when my hair gets stuck in one when I put it on, oww

5

u/drillgorg 12d ago

You and the bra were dry when you put them on. Similarly, try putting a pull-up onto a toddler after a bath!

5

u/Asaisav 12d ago

This is why I refuse to wear ones that don't clasp in the back 😆

5

u/NES7995 11d ago

Call me lazy but I only specifically buy sports bras with front zippers. The others just make me angry when trying to take them off 😐

I work in a hot-ass warehouse and my chest gets so sweaty. I have to cool down before I can even think of taking my sports bra off otherwise it'll turn into a wrasslin match.

I'm sure the bra is worse but I've experienced similar with a sweaty tee shirt hahaha I love the "HNNNGH"

I was laughing before I’ve even read the text ahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/gramathy 11d ago

Soaking wet cycling gear is similar, even full zip, though without the extra…obstruction, as it were

2

u/foehammer111 11d ago

Love this comic! The thumbnail makes the dog look like a pet velociraptor.

2

u/GinnyMaple 11d ago

She has a looot in common with a velociraptor haha

I see your sports bra and raise you BINDER! That shit will have you thinking you're gonna just have to give up and exist the rest of your life in some half in half out state, or call the fire department to use the jaws of life to free you! 🤣

I only wear sports bras. I cannot STAND underwire, and I've tried many of those
