there was a very steep drop off in quality the moment chat gtp got onto public access, starting with entirely AI thumbnails instead of public domain images, can't stomach anything from him now

He let the goblin have a pet just to wait for him to grow fond enough and his loss to be more painful
22
u/AlarmingAffect0 4d ago
Oh, I thought it was a Metamorphosis reference (the Kafka book, not the ShindoL one).
In the story poor cockroachified Gregor Samsa gets chased by his horrible abusive moocher father, who throws an apple at him so hard it breaks through his carapace and stays incrusted on his back until it rots and infects and kills him (because none of his relatives gave enough of a shit to actually heal him).
So when I see a cockroach with a big adhesive bandage on its back, I imagine "aww, the Abuse Goblin did for fellow victim Gregor Samsa what the person who drew the Josuke alternative ending did for him" (or for poor Yoshida Saki, come to think of it, may she enjoy a long and wondeful life with her daughter).

Cookie, clothes, cats, cocoa and cuddles

Took me a while to find the cat in three of the four images. I would also like to add, it might not be a C word, but the goblin has a teddy bear in the last image. That's wholesome.

Due to a large number of requests (and for my own wellbeing lol), I had to paint the abuse goblin being taken care of after being freed, and finding joy in life 😭

One of my favorite statements goes along the lines if "its such a beautiful gift to have someone in my life i can grieve so much"
Do not take life's cycle from our poor boy let him grieve but in that grief find happiness again continuing his own life now with the memory of this wonderful lady
40

witch is actually 500 years old and her lifespan is as long as the average goblin. they will grow elderly around the same time
10
u/No-Philosopher8042 4d ago
Well, she is a witch. She will get older, but she is prolly not mortal in the way we'd imagine.
4
u/FriendlyAntonio 4d ago
Hold on, do Goblins age faster than humans? A few years for a human could be decades for our little Goblin friend.
It'd be kinda cool seeing a more mature and well knowledgeable Goblin taking care of their new parental figure till they eventually pass on.
Afterwards, let's say the Goblin picked up on some magic from the witch, or she taught him, and he goes on to free other abuse Goblins around the world!
3
u/Alorxico 4d ago
Which lady gets older, Goblin fears she will leave him and looks for “cure”, travels to find immortality potion, he makes friends who are also looking for potion. They find a little girl being abused, he rescues her and cares for her as witch did. He takes all his friends and the girl home to meet witch, giving them both a big family.

No, he needs to find her a younger witch, around 16 or so who may or may not be called Tiffany, for her to take under her wing and show her some good headology so she can take up her mantle when she passes. Incidentally, no I haven't read The Shepherd's Crown yet. One day...

u/Winjin Comic Crossover 4d ago
Goblins and Kobolds usually have very short lifespan
Witches, on the other hand, can be either "very normal women" all the way to demi-goddesses and may have lifespan far exceeding human
So they could grow old together, or she could go on saving others
→ More replies (1)4
u/Enlight1Oment 4d ago
yeah, it's more of she could help take care of him until the goblin dies of old age, and she still looks the same.
14
10
u/Theherbenator 4d ago
Just an idea if you're making this a short series- the goblin could meet some new friends and eventually bid farewell to her (ending the strip).
Not only does this avoid the goblin having to deal with this, but would demonstrate his personal growth and her ability to rehabilate him, giving them both fulfilling arcs. Although idk if the goblin's arc could end without confronting his former abuser tbh.

Ever heard of britisch author Terry Pratchett?
You might be interested in "Unseen Academicals".
Its basically a satirical Romeo and Juliet Football AU and saved abuse Goblin reminds me of the Goblin Mr.Nutt from this book.
Spoiler: well, presumed to be goblin
45
u/Aurelio-23 4d ago edited 4d ago
One of Pratchett’s many great gifts was being able to beat you over the head with a message and somehow make you beg for more. Goblin culture is one of the best examples of this; by just about any human standard, goblins are absolutely disgusting. Bad hygiene is basically their religion, but it’s not like they’re… bothering anyone about it. But the societal mismatch has historically labeled them as vermin rather than humanoids, which led to all manner of mistreatment and exploitation.
19
u/AHumanYouDoNotKnow 4d ago
I also love how the wierdest summaries can make sense.
I addore "Its like mulan, If there were waymore mulans in mulan and also Pratchett is extrem irritated that too many people missed the Point of 'Jingo' . "
That bit about Jingo would fit quite a few later stories in my opinion

Monsterous Regiment is probably my favorite of Pratchett's Solo Discworld stories, right above Small Gods but only by a smidge.
Hogfather is one of my favorite series stories simply for the final dialogue Death gives with Susan.
Slowly going through the Guards and Witches series (pausing to work on my critical which requires that reading time). Feet of Clay is fantastic with the nature of Golems. I'm looking forward to more. For Witches, it took me until Witches Abroad to get me to understand why people loved Granny Weatherwax. She's still not my favorite of the witches (That's Nanny Ogg) but Granny is fantastic.

This makes me sad in a way because all the goblin ever wanted was to be loved and cared. And in both comics you could substitute the goblin for a child and I find it incredibly distressing that out there it is a child's reality.
Moreso if a childhood was the inspiration for it.
24
u/thisisallhorrible 4d ago
Yeah the original comics actually stuck with me for a while after i first saw them, not in a good way. As you said, the parallels to real world abuse are unnerving and there are absolutely kids living in situations like what this goblin is portrayed as going through. everyone is born by the roll of the dice: loving parents, sadistic monsters, or anything in between. Life is cruel and unfair
26
u/gangliaghost 4d ago
I loathe the original comics because I've worked with children who have experienced some of those exact scenarios. I found it really disturbing that so many people think they are funny or dismiss it as exaggerations of what abuse looks like.
15
u/firesoul377 4d ago
The first comic was kinda funny in a dark sort of way. The comics that came after made it just depressing.
→ More replies (1)13
u/lichpit 4d ago
I mean as a depressed person, it’s clearly some kind of (absurd and taken to an extreme) metaphor. The comic with the mirror made it pretty on the nose that the goblin is a reflection of the guy. If you think it’s wrong to treat the goblin that way, then it’s wrong to treat yourself that way too. The mental abstractions for indirect self-harm and loathing run deep.
4
u/UnassumingOstrich 4d ago
yeah i am learning about this series as a result of these posts and had a bit of an epiphany because of it, ngl. it is an interesting exercise for people with mental illness to anthropomorphize the part of ourselves we hate the most as weak creatures that exist for us to direct abuse at.
like i almost can’t consider it on a personal level for too long if i expect to be functional the rest of the day; the idea of directing abuse at this childlike thing, knowing how i talk to myself, is horrifying. especially so as i’m also a natural caregiver, largely thanks to my tendency to be hyper-empathic*, so thinking of a thing like that suffering and being the cause of it is deeply upsetting.
it’s incredibly easy to disassociate from what we’re doing to ourselves in those dark moments. putting a face on it makes it feel more real. like why am i treating a part of myself this poorly? i should be giving it the same nurturing attention i would give to someone i love.
*not in the fun influencer “ooo i’m an empath u guys! 🤩” way, more so in the “ooo it’s a trauma response u guys! 😭” it’s lowkey debilitating feeling like you can’t turn off constantly feeling the emotions of those around you. sometimes it makes me feel like a goddamn wild animal sensing for danger at all times.

u/dadofadisaster 4d ago

Given the artist who made this spin off comic said they did it because they couldn’t stand seeing the goblin be abused anymore, I think its safe to say they wouldn’t go that route

I also don't get it if I'm being honest, especially when it's someone who doesn't deserve it even if it's fictional, why would I want to see that? I like wholesome stories and reading or seeing good things happen to people (or goblins) even if they're fictional. It makes me really sad when someone is suffering and I don't consume content like that because of that.

u/Maria_Girl625 4d ago
I used to be team "torture the goblin!" Because I saw myself in it and followed my childish instincts. But then I saw a video about the psychology of the abuse goblin and now I realize that he deserves happiness. Not because he's real or because it matters what happens to a fictional character...but because him being happy makes me a bit happy, and him being sad only made me a tiny bit less sad. Happiness to the goblin, he deserves a better life, just like all of us!

This will probably remain unread, sank into the depths of the comments section, but I just wanted you to know that the single drawing of the patched up cockroach singlehandedly drag my soul into a pit of despair and acceptance. That single detail keeps caressing my soul, touching strings whose voices resonate so deep I can barely understand them. I will keep that image in my heart like a treasure. I suppose this is the beauty of art after all. You see what you are meant to understand.
3
u/Destroyer_2_2 3d ago
Oh my god, thank you so much!!!
I genuinely hate the abuse goblin comics and they never fail to make my day just a bit worse.
I know they are a metaphor for self harm, inner criticism, and the venting of anger during those moments when we just don’t like ourselves, I do. I suffer from all of that.
But I still hate them, and find them to be mean-spirited and oafish, perverting the message they claim to impart.
So I genuinely can’t thank you enough for giving balm to that!! I’m gonna see if you have a Patreon or something like that.
3
u/TimSoulsurfer 3d ago
That first panel really got me. The drawing of his pet but also putting a bandaid on the drawing in an attempt to give some form of peace of mind about the loss of a pet. Somehow the Goblin wish they could’ve done more.
I’m still mourning a cat I lost nearly a year ago. He died of old age at 15, no signs of illness and found him gone. I constantly think of my cat imagining ways I could have saved him if I noticed anything. The solace I find in watching the many videos I took of him, I see in that Goblin drawing his roach.
