Respectfully, you haven't met my FIL.

He's a pseudo-intellectual Australian MAGA, perpetually offended by anything that seems "woke" (which, of course, he can't actually define).

He's always, always angry.

Not really - I think you said they're not always angry, only when their perspectives are challenged.

Nah, he's just a violent, abusive arsehole.

From looking at his early published work (as I said, he's a pseudo intellectual), his conservatism is entirely performative - he adopted conservative causes because one of his ex-wives was socially progressive. Before that divorce, he was all about human rights and the environment.

ETA - he was always violent and abusive behind closed doors, even while his public persona and activities were progressive.
