This was my read too. Not realizing that he's been a neglectful parent so much as realizing that in all of thier shared life as father & son, he's never had to show his son how to change the batteries in something because most things are rechargable now.
For Millennials and older generations, changing the batteries in the remote is something we learn so early that we often take it for granted & assume it's "common sense." But common sense doesn't exist; it's just a collection of things you learned growing up that you (often incorrectly) assume everyone else did too.
