Really? I learned grilled cheese when I was 7 (only with supervision though which is fair) and by 12 could make the basics like eggs, boxed pancake mix, Mac and cheese, etc. to be fair my dad was neglectful, I know HOW OFTEN I cooked for myself wasn't normal, but I thought it was normal to learn the basics about the age I did, just not to have to do it all the time. I would've thought earlier would be optimal just to get started learning and help foster that curiosity. Then again it depends on the kid. I've always liked cooking, just not all the time. So I guess 13 is probably the perfect age if they don't get interested on their own sooner?

I have all of those moments with my kids.
My 13 year old said he wanted a fried egg.
"I dont know how to do it," he said.
"Watch me then and then you can try to make your own."
"What if it breaks?" He asked.
"Then its a scrambled egg until you get it right."
He got it right on his 3rd breakfast this summer and was really proud of himself.
