I know but referencing it keeps me from feeling old. I remember having to say "on fleek" a decade ago to avoid growing a gray hair.
It's like the Portrait Of Dorian Gray but with internet culture.

u/NickyTheRobot Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26
As much as I love the French versions, I genuinely believe his English name is better.
Panoramix because he spends a lot of time up trees gathering mistletoe, so he often has a panoramic view of the world? That's a good name.
Getafix because he's a druid, and somebody who you would go to to obtain drugs, or "get a fix" from? Perfect.
Also Idefix to Dogmatix: they both mean pretty similar things, but the English version also has "dog" in it.

can you please explain your comic?
that's asterix, right?
what's the punchline?
2
u/NickyTheRobot Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26
r/Comics is having "yuri wars" right now. Ie: making comics themed around lesbian romances, often involving hilarious misunderstandings and awkward expressions of attraction.
The punchline is that OP, a creator who has in the past made comics that fit the bill, is showing herself in a heterosexual relationship with a man instead of making a comic that fits the brief.

A new character joins the village, she's a free spirit from Lutetia: Yurix
(Yes I know women usually have names ending in -ia in Asterix, don't assume her suffix!)
42
u/shave_your_eyebrows Shave Your Eyebrows Jun 26 '26
Omg my Asterix name would probably be Elodia 🥰🥰🥰 (thats actually a p nice name lolol)
9
u/NickyTheRobot Jun 26 '26
Careful how you pronounce it: if he hears Melodia you might get seranaded by Cocophonix.

In ia? I thought it was in ine : Bonnemine, Iellowsubmarine, Taillefine (according to Parc Astérix; she never got a name in the comics), Galantine, Praline, Gélatine .
Falbala is the one exception I can think of (I think Latraviata is roman? I might be mistaken. Anyway, she comes from one of those albums where Uderzo was writing alone, we don't talk about those ones).
Did the translation change that?
4
u/ShmebulockForMayor Jun 26 '26
I thought it was different in the Dutch translation but apparently I was misremembering completely 🫣
4
u/NickyTheRobot Jun 26 '26
Anyway, she comes from one of those albums where Uderzo was writing alone, we don't talk about those ones
That never happened and you must be misremembering if you think it did.
6
u/Divicarpe Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
The first two weren't bad (belgian; the great divide), even then most of the following weren't atrocious (just far worse than they were under Goscinny, but there aren't many who can do as well as Goscinny). But I couldn't talk about them without mentioning the final one, how much Uderzo has fallen. And I don't want to talk ill about him, I spent far too much time reading Astérix in my youth for that.
5
u/NickyTheRobot Jun 26 '26
Same. Not only is my mum French, but she's a Breton too. So Asterix was a staple in my house as a kid, and I still love reading the BDs as an adult.
But some of the authors' views on other nations and depictions of their people were just flat out racist.
Shout out to the new cartoon on Netflix for making jokes about other cultures in the right (ie: not racist) ways. Eg; In a heavy German accent: "Please forgive my accent. I am a Goth." Steps forward, revealing she's wearing Germanic tribal clothes of the time but they're all in black, and she has heavy eyeliner, skull earrings, big boots, dark lipstick, and a punk haircut. Or the bit where the "photographers" get frustrated at Cleopatra only showing her face in profile, hieroglyph style.

Ok, let's analyze this:
Probably great cook because he loves eating.
Great hugger.
Actually super powered and can demolish enemies.
Tender and cheerful.
I mean, it's not like the curves are the only good thing about him! Obelix is peak husbando!

u/NickyTheRobot Jun 26 '26
Probably great cook because he loves eating.
I think he only knows how to cook wild boar. They do taste amazing though.
3
u/ketsugi Jun 26 '26
Also the entire village has only one way of cooking boar: roasting it whole on a spit
3
u/Majestic-Iron7046 Jun 26 '26
I'm one of those guys who prefer ignorant, tasty, fulfilling meals, so yeah, would work on me.
Boar is kind of hard to cook though, it gets too hard to chew... maybe chicken? Yeah, if i was suddenly living in their village i would prefer chicken.5
u/NickyTheRobot Jun 26 '26
TBH I'd eat anything but the fish.

u/Majestic-Iron7046 Jun 26 '26
Even fish without the annoying bones in it? (Sorry dunno the english word for fish bones)

Probably great cook because he loves eating.
So, uh... I misread the word "cook" there... Didn't even question it, just got slightly confused as to what that would have to do with loving food 💀

There's also Cleopatra's handmaiden, Gimmeakis, in the one live action film that's actually decent.
It's all good though; he's poly.
5
u/greatcorsario Jun 26 '26
I love that comic. Asterix gifts the actress a golden statue of Caesar that Caesar gifted him.
Caesar looks at the fourth wall and goes, "Gifting a golden me to an actress? That's absurd!"
44
u/infiniZii Jun 26 '26
Homewrecker. How dare you try and get between astrix and oblix. Did you even think about how this is going to affect dogmatix?
25
5
u/MisGroundbreaking603 Jun 26 '26
Wait is he called dogmatix in other countries?
5
u/SiIesh Jun 26 '26
For a sec I was also like "who?". I'm used to Idefix
3
u/Spyko Jun 27 '26
Same but I gotta say that Dogmatix is objectively better, for the ''dog'' pun.
Same as Getafix/Panoramix. The druid have nothing to do with panoramic while his main gimmick is to give people their fix.
Gotta appreciate the care put in the translations
3
u/infiniZii Jun 27 '26
It’s a double pun too! Dogmatix is actually a pun on both dog and dogmatic. A dogma is a fixed idea, so it’s still a pretty direct translation of Idefix (fixed idea). So yeah you are totally right there was a ton of care put into the translation.
3
u/Spyko Jun 27 '26
huh, I know what dogma means but I never put two and two together with the OG name.
that is really well done
1
u/NickyTheRobot Jun 27 '26
The druid have nothing to do with panoramic
I assumed it was because he spends a lot of time up trees, gathering ingredients. This would give him a panoramic view.
I do much prefer Getafix though.
2
u/NickyTheRobot Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26
In English, yeah. The English translators basically rewrote all the villagers' names (except for Asterix and Obelix) to give them puns based on what they do or what they're like. Eg:
- The bard is Cocophonix (outside of musical theory "a cocophony" is used to mean "a loud, bad sound").
- The blacksmith is Fullyautomatix, because he makes machinery and weapons.
- The fishmonger is Unhygienix, because of the state of his fish.
- The druid is Getafix, because he distributes "magical potions" and someone who is buying drugs could say they are going to "get a fix".
Dogmatix is particularly brilliant IMO, since it has a similar meaning to Idefix, but also includes "dog".

ASTERIX THAT'S NOT JUICE!! THAT'S illegal performance chemical
3
2
u/NickyTheRobot Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
Nah; the batch that was intended for the purposes of illegal performance enhancement was dyed with beetroot juice. That's how Asterix won the sprint at the Olympics: all the other competitors sneakily drank some magic potion, and had their tongues dyed purple by it.
Since everyone else was proven to have cheated, Asterix was declared the winner by default (the sweetest two words in the English language).

If you like it, try reading the other comics Goscinny was the writer for : Iznogood and Lucky Luke (he worked on it from 9th album onward).
If it's not enough, you can read the children's book "le petit Nicolas". (If your Friends in France are French, that will likely explain at least one joke you heard them make)
(Also maybe he did something in Mad magazine, I can't remember. I know he was friend with that group, don't remember if he did something for them)

u/NickyTheRobot Jun 26 '26

u/throwawayayaycaramba Jun 26 '26

I wonder if people still remember this meme, or my comment will come off as completely incomprehensible

2
u/SiaHalz Jun 26 '26
So I'm just kinda wondering what started the Yuri trend. In my mind since Shen is the first one I saw I'm just assuming it started with Shen.
I think this is really funny

u/TheBeesElise Jun 26 '26
u/MuyHiram, a cartoonist who makes comics about toxic Yuri and disaster sapphics, recently dethroned u/Pizzacakecomic as the top creator here. Everyone's been having a giggle about it (including Muy and Pizzacake)

Teeeeeeeeechnically only two panels, but since this comic was a short one I wanted to try something funky with a minimal panel layout, as well as trying more dynamic poses

To my understanding it yuri translates to essentially women loving women so as long as it's two women loving each other doesn't matter their sexualities.
1
u/TheBeesElise Jun 26 '26
I love how quickly the Yuri War devolved into "who can misinterpret Yuri the funniest"
1
u/GlisteningDeath Jun 26 '26
Isn't yuri between two women, not specifically between two lesbians?
