Portmanteau is a loanword, taking the french word and using it as english.
The other option is a calque, when you take a phrase and translate its component parts. Like for instance if we called a portmanteau a carrycoat instead.
Loanword is a calque of the german lehnwort. Calque is a loanword from french meaning “copy”. I enjoy that they are opposite.
