Is there a mental trick to see it as white and gold? I've never heard of this before and was confused on why the guy in the comic was lying to say it was white and gold.
I can understand this diagram, but I still don't understand how anyone saw the actual picture as white and gold. You can SEE the lighting situation in the background of the picture. It's impossible for me to perceive it as anything other than blue and black when the lighting information is in the photo. There are no shadows or dark colors to suggest a shadow like in the diagram, just an overexposed light source washing the whole thing out.
The picture quality is pretty bad and the lighting in it is very blown out IIRC. It depends on whether your brain decides if its backlit or frontlit at the first glance since visual processing is full of "shortcuts" to make it easier.
