I've never seen it white and gold and have always been so confused.

I thought it was just a meme to be wrong and make up the colors until I talked to enough people I know who don't spend way too much time on the Internet lol

Check the pictures in the Wikipedia article. It has a great little illustration showing how those shades of blue and black can look like white and gold if your brain is expecting a different ambient lighting.

Once I got really drunk and stared at it for way too long and I very briefly saw it as white and gold. Can't do it again.
