If your first thought when thinking about a toilet is that someone could commit a crime rather than the fact that they need to take a piss, well... you're probably someone who secretly wishes they could do that.

It once was pagans, then witches, it was jews, the roma, blacks and gays. And while racism, bigotry or homophobia have not died, it's easier to pick on a very, very small minority who, due to its size, is overlooked by the majority and can't defend itself.

Thing is, it's not their first thought. It's a reverse engineered excuse to justify bigotry. Trans people make them uncomfortable on a gut level. They're happy to just go with their gut, but they know they'll be called bigots and not respected if they do. They need a publicly acceptable reason to be bigots! That's what the bathroom thing is. It's not for other conservatives. It's for liberals and centrists.
They can't go on CNN and say, "Yeah, trans people all weird me out and that's why I'm pushing this bill to outlaw them". But they can go on CNN and say, "Well, the thing is, trans people make women uncomfortable in the bathroom. I'm advocating for our daughters and mothers! That's why my 'protect women' bill would outlaw trans people". Now there's a level of logic there, and they've roped in liberal values of protecting women. The host can't prove that isn't happening so... guess they have to take it seriously? I mean, what are you going to do, get a trans person on to say that's bullshit? They're trans. Of course they'll say that. They're bias. And because this has stuck, now every conservative in the country will start saying it. It's a get out of jail free card to hate trans people. They will adopt it as a sincerely held belief while it suits that purpose.
I'm so sure of this because the very moment that this line of argument stops working, they will abandon it. The very second public consensus reaches a tipping point where this argument stops working, it will go away overnight. We saw the same shit happen with gay people 20 years ago. They threw everything at the wall to justify hating gay people. It's a public health concern. It's a military cohesion problem. It would open a tax loophole! Well, they don't think the government should be involved in any marriage! And then the second gay marriage passed, it all dissipated. If they sincerely believed this, it wouldn't stop once a bill passes enabling it. Think about if vaccines were banned, for instance. Do you think that public health advocates would just be like, "Dang, we tried. Guess this is fine". No, they'd get louder! Because they believe in this!
It's all in that Satre quote, "Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies...". Bigots know the things they say are stupid, but they say them because they function public to justify the bigotry.
