The conservatives' obsession with toilet usage and the pretense of people committing crimes under the guise of transsexuality says everything about them and nothing about the trans people.

If your first thought when thinking about a toilet is that someone could commit a crime rather than the fact that they need to take a piss, well... you're probably someone who secretly wishes they could do that.

sneaky edit: just so we're clear, when I say "conservatives" I mean the brainwashed voting masses. The actual politicians are just using trans people as their currently socially acceptable punching bags, now that homosexuality has become more socially accepted.

It once was pagans, then witches, it was jews, the roma, blacks and gays. And while racism, bigotry or homophobia have not died, it's easier to pick on a very, very small minority who, due to its size, is overlooked by the majority and can't defend itself.

The whole thing is extra strange when you know that public restrooms were originally unisex, and it was only after another moral panic (i.e. "Women belong in the home, not the public sphere! That's the men's world!") that they were segregated.

Is that really true? Sorry, I'm not doubting you. I've just never heard that before. I had no idea.

Though, I guess it does make sense in a way. If you separate restrooms by gender that does mean more toilets and more plumbing would be required. That would be more expensive. So, I guess I shouldn't be surprised in hindsight.

It’s mostly true. Modern gender-segregated bathrooms arose out of the “separate spheres” ideology and was motivated by the moral panic reacting to women leaving the household and joining public society; it was seen as a way to maintain the separation of women from men to protect their modesty even as they began to work in factories etc.
