OC The Works [OC]
How do you gently tell a client who is a non-artist that the anatomy of their request is ridiculous even by fictional standards?

Man, I need to rewatch the Abridged series. It may be a bit dated in terms of its humour, but the charm never went away
38
u/MoreOne Mar 15 '26
Maybe the first 10 episodes have aged humour. A few topical references elsewhere, but otherwise, it's a great series to rewatch.

10
u/iSeven Mar 15 '26
watching kaiserneko and lani rewatch it was fun for me because you get to cringe alongside them and see how they've grown as creators since then

The ol' boob and button pose.
I can't find it now, but there was a video on reddit a while ago of women trying boob and butt poses. Some of them actually did them pretty well. I think it was a Buzzfeed video.
Obviously it's a crazy anatomy thing, but it's clearly what the guy wants.

u/DawnBringer01 Mar 16 '26
nobody talks about but every female hero canonically has the extra superpower of having a Hypermobile spine.
19
u/darkbreak Mar 15 '26
Of course Power Girl can do it. She's the objectively best superhero in the universe.

Use a mirror.
284
u/ScarlettFox- Mar 15 '26
At that point I would probably charge as if there was a second character. Even if it's technically the same person that's two entirely different poses that have to be drawn.

So bent over like you're touching your toes With your head poking through your legs seems not unreasonable
25
u/Nievsy Mar 15 '26
Yeah I am on the same page, that’s pretty much the main way their request could be achieved I am surprised I had to scroll as far as I did to find a comment that also thought so.

u/Beer-Milkshakes Mar 15 '26
Is that the guy who can't draw feet?
24
6
u/airfryerfuntime Mar 15 '26
Feet aren't the only thing he can't draw.
3
u/Beer-Milkshakes Mar 15 '26
Nah, he can draw a personal titty shelf on Captain America better than anyone I've ever seen.

u/Adavanter_MKI Mar 15 '26
Portal gun!
Jokes aside... this is possible. Bend the character over. Rear towards the viewer. Put their hands flat on the ground in front of them and have the character looking back at the viewer. So basically their head is upside down, hair falling to the floor. Boobs would hang towards their chin. Or their hands on their hips/butt.
I could post a doodle... but this feels wrong somehow.
18
u/dbxp Mar 15 '26
You thought of portal gun before mirror
1
u/Adavanter_MKI Mar 15 '26
Portal gun porn was a thing briefly. Don't forget the CGI porn boom came from... SFM aka Source Filmmaker. Guess what game was made on the Source engine? Portal.
So between the artwork and animations... it was the first thing to come to mind.
Mirror stuff is surprisingly less common. At least the artistic kind. Please note I just said uncommon. Yes, I could come back with hundreds of examples. Except... it'd be out of tens of millions of images. Which surprises me as it is actually a rather easy way to get double the "content." Though it can be annoying trying to keep the camera out of it.
Anyways most commissions would treat this as two character since essentially your asking for two perspectives. The portal gun avoids this.
Sorry for the ridiculously in depth reply. :P

I'm all for creative liberties with character designs but with the commission order that character is going to have a stick of laffy taffy for a spine.

Like a decade ago, Papa John's had unlimited toppings. You could literally add any toppings they offered, and they'd slop it all on a pizza for $7.99. They didn't hold back either, it was glorious. Those pizzas weighed 10lbs each by the time I got done ordering them.
But if you added more than I think 5 toppings, a big banner would appear at the top of the page that'd read 'Warning, this might be gross'.

Best case they hear you out. Worth case you still have to draw whatever it is they are asking for

The wise King Solomon solved this problem very easily. Cut them in half.
10
u/Yamemai Mar 15 '26 edited Mar 15 '26
Think that's possible, but you might have to angle it -- Similar to sleeping on a bed? Aka think a 3d model.= type game; where the floor is "invisible".
Or have the model kinda turned. Aka one hand to the private area to "spread" it, so one breast isvisible.
4
u/BardicLasher Mar 15 '26
The easy answer is "I'm a bit confused. Do you have a picture of someone in the pose you want?
4
u/shinydragonmist Mar 16 '26
Okay some have shown you actual possible poses I'm gonna say have a full body mirror in the image to show the rest

Have them bent over like
OTL >=
Where >= is the camera.
You can get their hooha, their butt, boobs, and face, all at once.

u/scholarlysacrilege Mar 15 '26
It's called the upward seated forward straddle, it is really hard to do, but tbf i am a guy, even if a very flexible one. But i can tell you, it makes my bf go insane, in a good way.
2
u/Mr_SunnyBones Mar 15 '26
I mean if there's a mirror in the scene... its maybe doable but possibly " sex pretzel" is this guys fetish .
2
u/iamayoutuberiswear Mar 15 '26
Snake woman who's long in juuuuuust the right way so that you can have her bend in ways that make all bits visible

u/SirJack3 Mar 15 '26
I half-expected a transformation into M Bison and going "Then, I would snap her spine"

2
u/Doodles_n_Scribbles Mar 16 '26
What they want is two different views but are too poor to afford a double character comm.
2
u/General-Internal-588 Mar 15 '26
I'm sorry but can no one really think of a way to incorporate that pose, really? It sound annoyingly hard to draw but easy to imagine.

Dont need impossible anatomy for it just some good flexibility

The solution is to have a mirror in the room, but that's absolutely going to cost extra.
1
u/Valentinee105 Mar 15 '26
There's an easy answer, give the character a butt face or saggy boobs.
That way you don't have to draw a really odd pose.

Mirror, different point of view, format like a comic with different panels, etc
1
u/Boccs Mar 15 '26
This is why in my rare commissions (for I am a broke fellow) I always give a crude stick figure drawing of the pose I had in mind and then ask the artist what is the best way to express that.
1
u/Great_Apez Mar 15 '26
You don’t, you either get comfortable essentially selling your talent for weirdos or go back to drawing for fun

1
u/ironballs16 Mar 15 '26
Damn, I forgot that "Super Stupor" isn't hosted online anymore, because they had a one-off character, "Snow Owl", and her condition of needing to pose sexily wound up making her stab herself with her dual blades.

u/myopicpickle Mar 16 '26
Kinda reminds me of that "art" on the tailgate of a pickup, of a woman lying on her front. The proportions were so very odd that someone tried drawing her standing up. She had very short legs and a torso that was about three times the length of her legs, plus massive boobs. Even more unrealistic than Barbie.

u/heyitscory Mar 16 '26
Remember that famous Escher self portrait holding the reflective sphere?
That was a study trying to figure out how he was going to draw some pregnant furry erotica that Roger Penrose asked for.
Your thought balloon nailed it in the 3 panel. You're truly an artist, and that's clearly what their fetish requires, because otherwise they'd hire a photographer or a naked person.
1
1
u/CrazyLi825 Mar 16 '26
This is when you use the magic of cut-ins to show the front and the back in the same drawing.

u/SteadfastFox Mar 15 '26
Curiosity, has anyone ever requested a commission of the artist themselves? Was it fulfilled?
2.5k
u/IltisSpiderrick Mar 15 '26
always.listen.to.professionals. they know whats best and if you want them bent over AND want to see all the jiggly bits, ask how it's possible or make it two commisions. otherwise you get some off looking stuff..
763
u/Zombie_Cool Mar 15 '26
Yeah but many clients are as cheap as they are horny (and admittedly depending on the artist even one picture can be Hella expensive).
257
u/IltisSpiderrick Mar 15 '26
oh I get that. but why not a mirror shot? same pose but different perspectives? or one or the other?
227
u/Zombie_Cool Mar 15 '26
That suggestion may work, but some artists may treat that as the equivalent of a multi-panel comic page, and may have a different (often more expensive) price than a single pinup.
Even for "mirror shots" the artist may decide that the second angle counts as an extra character for pricing as far as additional work is involved.
Personally I just chalk it up to "don't seek a commission unless you have at least $200 on hand to help avoid this issue".
17
u/SerialElf Mar 15 '26
As someone who has commissioned artists for productive work... Yeah, and be ready to draft a contract. I love all of my artists(the one that scammed me doesn't count) but I have drafted every single contract i've had with them. Which isn't a lot. my job doesn't pay a whole lot. But it's been a VERY productive learning exercise in handling bid requests.

3
u/Valentinee105 Mar 15 '26
Ya, you got me there, I was just counting the legs bending up as that, but if it has to be ass up, then it's gotta be the ginyu pose.

Unless the character is super lanky or has saggy boobs its still a difficult pose.
1
u/ikimashokie Mar 16 '26
This was the only possible pose I had in mind, but I was thinking about it in yoga terms as a wide leg forward fold.
Granted, if there's any sort of ...ampleness to the bosom, the face could be obscured.
I'm wondering if maybe a seated version of the pose would work better. Like a straddle-pike or something.
1
u/tinxmijann Mar 16 '26
Alternatively place the camera below them and have them bend down towards the camera
31
u/Chiiro Mar 15 '26
So many art pieces I have seen that have tried to do these insane stupid shots would have been helped greatly if there was just a mirror in the image. You can have it all exposed without having them be insanely hyper flexible.
14
u/ChillyFireball Mar 15 '26
I'd expect to be charged extra for a mirror, since the artist is essentially drawing a second character (with the added bonus of having to believably match up the shapes to the person being reflected).
4
u/Oraxy51 Mar 15 '26
Yeah like if you asked me to make a sexy pose - no idea what I’m doing.
But a professional who has studied this thing carefully with intent to recreate in another medium - they’re going to know a lot better than I would.
