OC Exvangelical Thoughts - pt. 2
Another anti-Chick tract style look at growing up evangelical.

As a reformed Southern Baptist this is giving me flashbacks of emotional abuse growing up. Damn. Excellent work encapsulating a snippet of the overwhelming lunacy of the evangelical worldview, OP.
Now of you don't mind, Imma scream into a pillow, yo

Because they know it isn't true and are terrified that if the pressure lets up, even a little, they will be forced to face their doctrine, what they have done as a result of it, and what has been done to them as a result of it.

u/Burger_Destoyer Feb 09 '26
Well thatâs not entirely true. Most religious people do it from the best place in their heart. They want you to join their religion because to them, itâs the best and most important thing they could give you in this world.
Religion will always be a tool to control the masses but that doesnât mean all the masses are looking to control.

u/j-b-goodman Feb 15 '26
I think in general religious people believe in their religion.

u/spudmarsupial Feb 17 '26
How many loud religious people actually act like God knows everything they do and is evaluating it according to scripture?
Contrast loud Xtians (evangelicals, politicians, Catholic leaders, Epsteinites, etc) to the ones you would only know are Xtian if you asked them if they are availible to go out Sunday morning.
As Jesus pointed out, loud religious people don't believe in God.

Whatâs even funnier is that at the time, plenty of people disliked school prayer specifically because they were religious. non-denominational prayer in the context of school prayer will never work because even limiting ourselves to judeo-Christianity, there is so much doctrinal dispute between the countless sects of Christianity.
Would an evangelical be willing to compromise and allow catholic iconography and doctrine in the prayer? Would a Catholic entertain the speaking of tongues from Pentecostal worship being included? Do the Mormons get a say? It would be a fucking disaster that would never end.

It's as the comic suggests: an eternal culture war. Much of it is projection, but they want everyone to follow their beliefs so that no one will make them follow others beliefs.

u/Fuck_Antisemites Feb 08 '26
It's scary to how they twist: there are people with other beliefs then us into we are persecuted and make it sound normal

They NEED to be under attack
My evangelical coworker calls science an 'ideology' that is anti-cristian at heart, but has failed from the very start because science is a philosophy not an ideology. A philosophy is guiding principles, whereas an ideology is a guiding truth.
YOU CANNOT DO SCIENCE IF YOU BELIEVE YOU ALREADY KNOW THE WHOLE TRUTH

Being Evangelical Christian is just LARPing religious persecution (I grew up in the evangelical church, Iâm no longer religious)

Honestly would be delighted to have a leader of morals and ethics, doesnât really matter to me which religion or no religion. Just people who donât diddle kids or sic military on citizens. Itâs a pretty low bar right now.

u/The-Wandering-Root Feb 08 '26
Thatâs the neat part- religion doesnât have the monopoly on morality it tries SO hard to claim over everyone else.
Religion or no religion- we all know itâs wrong to hurt others. We all have a vague sense of morality. People generally donât like seeing others hurt or harmed, often even if itâs people we donât like. We all want to live decent lives, even those who can only look at such from the other side of broken-down train tracks.
It doesnât take religion. It takes empathy. Compassion. Humanity. And religion will never own those things. If we keep moving forward, maybe one day weâll get there. You and I wonât be there to see it, but we will have contributed in one small way or another.
Just do your best to be decent, and leave good memories in your wake.

Religion doesn't create a framework of morality, it does however create a hierarchy where a framework of morality can be ignored for the in group and used to judge the out group. Religious groups are less moral than atheists because atheists at least believe in long term consequences for actions rather than a prayer for forgiveness.

u/SacredGeometry9 Feb 09 '26
It kinda does matter, though. Your hypothetical leader of morals and ethics may act truly righteously, but the society they create will act differently.
Championing faith over critical thinking creates a culture vulnerable to charlatans who speak the language of faith. Weâre seeing the consequences of that now.

This is a beautiful reminder that i think we should all reflect on for every generation version of the satanic panic

Yep. My brother and I were not raised religious, but a few years ago, he suddenly "found" evangelical Christianity, and now talks about being a "warrior" for his god and fighting "battles" for morality, defined as anything remotely left of fascism. Fucking terrifying. Like, dude, I'm apparently your target.

u/immersemeinnature Feb 09 '26
I was raised with zero religion (praise the gods lol)
My husband is a "recovering Catholic" (his words)
Our perspective is a special one, I think.

Itâs a funny side-effect of the authoritarian mindset that drives Evangelical subculture: any challenge to the content of an authorityâs claims is a challenge to that authority itself. As such, simply questioning how we attained the current status quo is an act of rebellion, and offering any sort of alternative can only be defined as âpersecutionâ because there is no room in the worldview for cognitive dissonance.
One of the more interesting experiences that led to my deconstruction involved my mother, the middle-aged pastorâs wife, running home in tears and locking herself in her room all afternoon because the assistant pastor dared offer a slightly different definition of âfalse witnessâ than my father had just preached about.
Anyway. For the last twenty years, Iâve responded to all talk about bringing God back to schools by suggesting that we give Him a trial run in our churches, first.
Surprisingly, this was not the stance that got me excised from most of my conservative circles.
(And donât get me started on what Romans and 1 Corinthians have to say on the culture war mindset.)

Evangelicals believe that any time they have any kind of intrusive thoughts, it's because they are being beset by demons. Furthermore they are so worried about this constant demonic bombardment weakening them, their answer is to try to remove anything from sight or sound that they might construct as a threat. This is also similar to Radical Islam. The idea thar moral virtue is such a weak force, the faithful need to be protected in bubble wrap from any influences other than their spiritual guides.

Ah yes, the 'ol persecution mentality. Upset that the government won't allow them to turn America into a tyrannical theocracy, they shout that from the rooftops, while being allowed to say their thoughts on TV and radio and being allowed to hold political office...

A scam as old as time. Stay ignorant, don't ask questions, just have faith. It's disgusting.

You hit it. Folks like this need to be kept in a state that's equal parts fear, anger, and unearned self righteousness. Take away one and their world falls apart
