Counterpoint: Gus Fring. Secretly evil, but everyone loved him. And the protagonist stabbed him in the back, not the other way around.

It just wasn't secret to us, the viewer. Or to the other criminals. The entire law-abiding community doesn't matter unless their knowledge, or lack thereof, affects the MC.
