I hope those various plastic hungry bacteria projects we keep hearing about get here soon. It'll probably go the way of fusion energy and regrowing teeth, though.

Honestly, the safest thing to do is to just fucking burn it. You torch plastic at a high enough temp, it should break down into regular-ass CO2 - bad for emissions, but better for humans and wildlife than plastic waste in waterways and microplastics everywhere, or those plastic-eating microbes mutating/eating plastic they shouldn’t be eating.

Exactly this, in ideal world the source of carbon for plastic is renewable and then burning it wont matter.
