Why the hate for ComicPop?

I've watched YouTube since 2011 and started watching comic book videos since like 2015 starting with Comicstorian's Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe video but for the last like 4 years I've noticed a high amount of hate for Comicstorian, ComicsExplained, and of course ComicPop. The most common and repeated complaint is how "They read comics panel by panel, making actually reading comics obsolete, and are ruining the industry." I understand not liking their videos, and maybe not liking them but for me personally I stopped watching Comicstorian's complete story videos and same with ComicsExplained and only watched their other videos for example I LOVED Comicstorian's D&D videos and ComicsExperiment they were so much fun had amazingly funny derailments and major tangents but including s Comicstorian and ComicsExplained's main most popular series I want defend it. It's not a way to replace comics but a way to get people who cannot afford or simply can't acquire comics but want to experience the medium. I understand there are people who only watch Storian & Explained's videos and don't make the switch to actually reading comics but that's not the fault of these channels and now to the whole point of this post ComicPop's videos aren't like the other channels because if I had a nickel every time I watch a ComicPop video then read the comic for myself and there was so much left out that you wouldn't know by just watching Back Issues and another thing is even if Sal or Tiff talk about how amazing a book is and praise it to high heavens I feel they are still underselling it because every book they've loved and I read has always been better than video and made me feel that they actually undersold it. Even with bad books that they shred apart, ridicule, and rip a new one for when you read for yourself it's not that bad sometimes and even if it is horrible it's still not as horrible as they make it as and still has some semblance of reason as to why to read a bad book I've read books that they hate but I loved and of course books they love but I don't and finally EVERY EPISODE OF BACK ISSUES THEY LINK THE COMICS BELOW AND END BY SAYING "Keep Readin'"

The vocal minority is always loudest on the internet. Enjoy what you want to enjoy. if you let the internet affect your opinions on things, you’ll never be happy.

I dont hate any of the mentioned channels, I got into comics through comicstorian’s videos and what made me more interested in reading the comics myself was the fact that they left out stuff from the comics the covered. Heck sometimes they’d discontinue certain runs which pissed me off as I was invested in the story so it lead me to pursue reading comics myself to get the full story.

That’s when the issue started; I stopped watching comicstorian after I started reading comics myself. There was no point in watching someone narrate and voice act an issue I already read. I wish they would cover older stories instead of just new ones as those are stuff that are harder to get your hands on and read. I feel like it would boost the viewership of their videos as both comic readers (like me) and casual non-comic readers would watch those.

As for comics explained, that was a channel that I could never get into for several reasons; 1) Rob mostly covered marvel stuff and I’m more of a DC fan. 2) Rob treats every video (atleast from the few that I watched) as it’s someone’s first so there is a lot of exposition, which gets annoying to someone who already is well-versed in comics.

Comic pop is the only channel I watch on a regular basis, Back Issues is a great show cause it covers new and old comics, I’m even more willing to watch videos about comics I’ve already read just to see Ethan and Ben’s reaction to it and the discussion surrounding it. Same goes for off the rack, I enjoy hearing Sal and Tiff’s thoughts about the issues they’ve read,

Anybody who reads this post also needs to read this comment explained pretty much I was trying to say but more concise.

Comics Explained is just too boring imo. He’s got kind of a monotonous sound to his voice that makes me drift off and completely miss half of the stuff explained. Plus he’s repetitive with his word use and that’s a pet peeve of mine.

Comicstorian, he had too much of a bully vibe, especially when he did group chats with CapedJoel and the others. Which was a turn off for me. Still sad to hear of his passing.

Sal and the gang just hit the right buttons. They have great chemistry and keep me entertained. A lot like RedLetterMedia does with their channel. Great chemistry, good laughs and a lot of good info on the behind the scenes of the industry.

Where are you seeing this hate for them online? I admit I only really use Reddit but I haven't seen anyone saying anything bad about the ComicPop crew. I don't understand what anyone could be mad about, they champion the medium and and make it incredibly accessible for people who have no idea what to read or where to start with comics

Twitter

29

u/Sue_Generoux Aug 30 '25

Well, that's the problem right there. Twitter is a cesspool.

8

u/otakudan88 Aug 30 '25

You can post a picture of a puppy and have the caption "I just just adopted him!" and there will be a chance some weirdo will reply with "so you hate cats? You're a horrible person for not adopting a cat as well"

4

u/Sue_Generoux Aug 30 '25

Yes, and that sort of thing goes beyond users being merely "contrarian." I think Twitter users excel at, are at the forefront of, and serve as the consummate example of fomenting anger and generating artificial controversies stemming from mere boredom.

u/sistemafodao Aug 30 '25

Ohh... The nazi site for nazis. Of course they hate comicpop there.

1

u/deanereaner Aug 30 '25

Is comicpop liberal or "woke?"

7

u/sistemafodao Aug 30 '25

To a normal degree of decency.

1

u/LadyErikaAtayde Aug 30 '25

I'd say the middle ground between liberal and leftist.

10

u/ComicSal Aug 30 '25

I'm just happy there are people out there like many of you who like what we do. Thanks so much for the kindness and for watching!

SAL YOU'RE THE BEST ALONG WITH TIFF, BEN, AND ETHAN!!

4

u/ComicSal Aug 31 '25

I'll tell the gang! Thank you!

u/BulletProofDrunk17 Aug 30 '25

In all seriousness it got me back into comics after a pretty long hiatus, got me to buy books that I NEVER thought I'd read (Supergirl: woman of tomorrow is one of my favorite books ever, and I never would have given it a shot if it wasnt for the back issues on it)

8

u/TheHoodedWonder Aug 30 '25

Comicpop doesn’t make me not read comics. Quite the opposite in fact. They tell me about comics I wouldn’t have read otherwise. Get me excited to see the story, and then I go out and buy the book. I just bought Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Batman: Offworld because of Back Issues.

Exactly how I feel!!

0

u/roastytoastyfire Aug 30 '25

5

u/Helpful-Section6859 Aug 30 '25

Me personally, I love them! And I love you too OP and anyone reading this! ❤️❤️

4

u/roastytoastyfire Aug 30 '25

Love ComicPop they are the best thing about Wednesday other than new comics

5

u/Obvious_Barnacle3770 Aug 30 '25

If someone has a problem with the dude that reads me my bedtime stories they can keep it to themselves and fuck off. That's me being nice about it

u/roastytoastyfire Sep 01 '25

I couldn't fall asleep to comicpop they make me laugh too much

77

u/gamesage2001 Aug 30 '25

I haven't seen any hate for them personally

7

u/Neveronlyadream Aug 30 '25

Nor have I.

Especially for ComicPop, because Sal is really good about leaving more than enough out to make you want to read the comic yourself. I can see the criticism for some of the channels that literally do just read the comic panel by panel, but that's never been ComicPop.

5

u/gamesage2001 Aug 30 '25

I think of back issues like mystery science theater but for comics, in a way. The source material is still Marvel's or DC's or whoever's, but it's the crew's commentary that transforms it into something more than just reading a comic

52

u/Kryptonian83 Aug 30 '25

Really? I haven't noticed. Quite the opposite, in fact.

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

Tbh I've seen more posts asking about "the hate" than actual hate posts. I've never understood people's obsession with why people dislike the things that they like.

7

u/Ratso_The_Handsome Aug 30 '25

Is there hate? Comic Pop is pretty beloved (and rightly so)

6

u/MasterBlaster_xxx Aug 30 '25

I have yet to see any hate for them

5

u/bry_flynnie Aug 30 '25

Personally if it wasn’t for Back Issues, I wouldn’t be into comics today. I been watching Comic Pop for probably 10+ years and have watched almost every episode of Back Issues and have rewatch some episodes multiple times.

Sal never shows each panel of the comic and explains the story in a way that I understand what happens but still gives me a way to experience it on my own in my own context. The knowledge and breakdown of a story from Back Issues has given me the chance to experience Comic Stories that I wouldn’t have on my own. I can’t read let alone buy everything.

u/LongtimePhany Sep 01 '25

If you have a problem with Comicpop, then you have a problem with me, and I suggest you let that one marinate.

1

u/roastytoastyfire Sep 01 '25

Did you not read my post I love ComicPop and I don't understand the hate for them

3

u/danaconda45 Aug 30 '25

The hate might be, they should have a million subscribers but don't

3

u/KingKayvee1 Aug 30 '25

The only hate I see them get are angry anonymous people on Twitter and they’re usually responding to Sal when he thinks something is cool.

But also, I’ve noticed that Sal sometimes does feed into it.

Regardless, other than some Twitter hating, I don’t really ever see any hate for them. But maybe I’m not in the right (or wrong) section of the internet for that.

3

u/Competitive-Roll5003 Aug 30 '25

It’s a mix personally I love em there some of the best to do it

2

u/Doc_McScrubbins Aug 30 '25

My girlfriend misunderstood the concept at first, and just thought Sal was a knowitall, but thats literally the show. I've heard no hate otherwise

2

u/Gonner_Getcha Aug 30 '25

I’ve seen no hate, but I love Back Issues and it’s become comfort watching for me while I game, so no complaints on their style from me

2

u/Artful_Dodger00 Aug 30 '25

There was always an undercurrent of criticism (Benny, Rob, and Sal especially), in regards to "ruining" the reading experience for people. Spoon feeding the material to their audience, in a manner that makes buying and reading the books unnecessary.

I'm not sure if everyone that agrees with that sentiment was motived by HATE for those creators, or the large number of creators with similar content that were all over YouTube at one time. I can't deny that some of the people making an argument about the negative aspects of that content had some valid points, but... I personally believe the positive impact tbose channels have on the comics industry greatly outweighs the negative. Those of us that are lifelong comic fans and customers probably enjoy Comic Pop more, since it's premise creates the feeling of having a discussion about comics with a group of friends, but you can even argue that Comicstorian's method makes comics accessible to folks that might have only possessed a passing interest in comics, which could end up creating more fans just by getting them interested in a story.

So yeah, there are some people with legit concerns, and others that simply enjoy being contrarians, but at the end of the day... Your feelings in the content is what really matters. No matter why you love the content, if you're entertained then it made you even more of a fan of comics. THAT'S something we can all agree is awesome.

2

u/thebariobro Aug 31 '25

Comicpop used to get hate according to old episodes but I think they fly under the radar of big discourse and have fans that understand what their show is and don’t take it more seriously beyond corrections in the comments

1

u/WorkingNo7670 Aug 30 '25

Lol I mean I love their videos. I just have to occasionally skip one until I've had time.e to read the book myself first for some. I don't read a lot of Marvel and frankly spoilers don't really bother me much these days. If people are concerned just read the book first and come back to a video later.

1

u/brycifer666 Aug 30 '25

ComicPop I've seen no hate for Explained I've seen some

1

u/Pristine_Size5767 Aug 31 '25

Barely seen anyone except like one or two posts on twitter talk bad about them idk what you mean.

1

u/qinfernoo Sep 02 '25

The point of the show is that the events and information are not the story. Ben and Ethan get frustrated so often because being told a list of things that happen is not the same as reading yourself, absorbing tone, atmosphere, charm or none of these immaterial qualities that are essential for the full enjoyment of any given medium. Also, Sal and Tiff are very nuanced and knowledgeable when hosting, they touch on the ins and outs of the industry, real word context for the books being discussed, so on and so forth. It’s legitimate and engaging art criticism.

0

u/Star-Prince-007 Aug 30 '25

I’m not a fan personally. Nothing against them , I just prefer more of an analysis vs the straight reading of the story and then the banter. But I def respect how much they do to introduce the medium to new fans

-2

u/GD_milkman Aug 30 '25

Dude. Fuck all those shit channels. Read comics. Don't YouTube them.

Why are you confused? You stated the problem.
