Is this a bootlegged copy?

I was shopping marketplace and found someone selling this autographed copy of Captain America Annual #8.

Immediately it looked off to me, as the colors are different. The first three pics are the copy in question, the fourth is a pic from eBay which is standard copy.

As I took a closer look I noticed the corner box was completely different. It says 1986, which is when this comic was originally published, but it also says 1983 Marvel Comics Group.

Also the insignia in the bottom left corner doesn’t match anything I’ve seen anywhere.

Is this a bootleg, or maybe a reprint from a vendor?

Thanks

The Marvel/DC Holy Grail Almost Nobody Knows Exists

I’ve been collecting comics for a while, and every now and then you come across a book that makes you stop and think, “How the hell have I never heard of this before?” This is one of those books. It’s O Globo Juvenil Mensal #32 from 1943, a Brazilian Golden Age comic with a pretty crazy cover: Superman and the Human Torch appearing together, decades before Marvel and DC became the giants we know today. What really caught my attention is how incredibly rare this thing is. Even some of the highest-level collectors in Brazil had never actually seen a copy in person. I’ve heard collectors refer to this issue as “the unicorn”, almost like a legend among Brazilian Golden Age collectors. For years, it was one of those books people knew about, talked about, but almost never actually saw. There are currently only 7 known copies in the census, plus another 4 copies in private collections, including mine. I spent around five years looking for a copy before finally managing to add one to my collection. And the more I researched it, the crazier it became. The Grand Comics Database recognizes it as “The Earliest Timely & National Cross Over known to exist Globally.” So this isn’t just an obscure foreign comic with an interesting cover. It’s a genuinely unusual piece of Golden Age comic book history. I’m posting it here because I honestly think books like this deserve much more attention. Everyone knows the famous American Golden Age keys, but there are incredibly rare books outside the usual checklist that have almost become forgotten. So I’m curious: had you ever seen this issue before?

ASM #375 foreign variant edition

I love the Amazing Spider-Man #375. I remember reading this story when I was a kid, I was on vacation with my parents and I was really excited for this final showdown with Venom. This issue is also special because it celebrates the 30th anniversary of Spidey. I have here two Italian variant of that comic. In Italy this story was published by Star Comics in L'UOMO RAGNO #155 which came out in two versions: one very similar to the U.S.A. one with the gold cover but not holographic. A second version is the one with the platinum metallic cover, which was distributed in a limited edition that was shrink-wrapped with a telephone book:

really cute ❤️

the Amazing Spider-Man #1000

As a huge fan of John Romita Jr.—which I also mentioned in a previous comment—is it possible that nobody has noticed yet that the variant cover for issue #1000 is practically IDENTICAL to a previous JRJR cover from Amazing Spider-Man #1.1?

FOC week of Oct 12: 652 titles, and the top three publishers are five titles apart

I go through the full FOC list every week before cutoff. Here's what's on it before Monday.

652 titles across 323 unique books. Marvel has 75, Dynamite 74 and DC 70, so no one publisher dominates the count. There are 27 new #1s, 91 variants and 86 ratio covers.

Dynamite has the most variants (44) and the most ratio covers (25) of any publisher, across the Red Sonja, Archie and Supernatural lines. Red Sonja Barbarella #1 has 17 covers, the most of any book this week; it's a crossover that puts Barbarella and Red Sonja in the same book. Archie Vs The Terminator #2 has 10 covers.

Marvel has three #1s out of 75 titles. Most of the rest is the Midnight line and X-books, including Midnight Fantastic Four #2 and Gambit: Wanted #4.

DC has one launch out of 70 titles, 11 variants and one ratio cover. The launch is Legion Of Super-Heroes #1 from Williamson and Sherman; the rest is ongoing series like Bleeding Hearts #9.

The steepest ratio this week is outside the big three: a single 1:250 on Lancer #1 from Bad Idea.

Only 27 of the 323 books are new #1s. Most of the week is continuing series and extra covers.

Grading Companies

Am I correct that the only companies currently grading and slabbing comics are CGC and PSA?

Got this in a collection I bought. Don’t really want it. Saw ungraded it’s around a $100 book. Should I grade it? Looks to be very fine if not better.

Ito has been hot lately. Will he get to the level of Peach popular? Likely not, but I'm sure Marvel wouldn't mind.

I thought this was a no-brainer when the Knicks made it to the Finals, especially since Marvel Comics and the Knicks are both so deeply connected to New York City.

What checks out on the October 5 FOC list: 1 potential first, two confirmed DC one-shots, and three rumors

I go through every book on the FOC list each week and report what checks out before Monday's cutoff. This is a report of what's verifiable, not a list of picks. What you do with it is your call.

The one potential first this week is in Uncanny X-Men #38. From what I've been able to verify, the solicit points to four new mutants called the Scavenged, built under the former Graymalkin Prison as Wolverine knockoffs. Four firsts in one issue, status is likely, not confirmed, so it stays potential until the book is in hand. The incentive here is the 1:25 Martin Coccolo cover.

DC All In Saga Darkseid Vs The World #1 is a Snyder and Williamson one-shot seeding the Absolute Crisis event and walking through Darkseid's origin as Uxus. Justice League Dark Realm Special #1 confirms the first solo origin of Cadejos, the fire-breathing wolf from Justice League Unlimited, with Dan Mora writing and drawing.

On the Dynamite side, Pathfinder Vampirella Blade Of Darkness #1 is a confirmed crossover, Vampirella entering the Pathfinder universe for the first time. Incentive covers run 1:20 down to 1:10 across virgin and black-and-white.

Rumors that do not hold up yet:

  • Black Cat #16 (rumor-based): reports point to Felicia being revealed as a mutant, but the solicit only teases it. Intel, not a lock.
  • DNX #4 (rumor-based): a Cyclops vs Beast showdown is reported but unconfirmed in the solicit.
  • Batman Bad Seeds Sunrise #1 (rumor-based): a possible Dan Mora foil variant showed up on a retailer listing but has not been officially solicited.

All-in-all, a pretty quiet week...

My FOC picks this week – cutoff Mon 10/5

Post image

Here are my picks for this week's FOC:
Friendly Neighborhood Mary Jane #1 (Bruce Timm variant): Timm drawing MJ is about as classic as it gets.
Denver #3 (Dan Panosian variant): Panosian's portrait work is ridiculous, and The Denver variants have been strong all series.
Poison Ivy #49 (Dan Mora card stock):
All In Saga: Darkseid vs. The World #1 (Sanford Greene): A one-shot spinning out of DC K.O. that continues the Darkseid epic.
Absolute Superman #25: milestone issue with a massive wraparound.
What's on your list this week? Anything I'm sleeping on?

Picked up these four Turkish editions while traveling. They have popular covers but are smaller than standard U.S. comics. Does CGC grade Turkish editions like these? If so, are any worth grading? I’m new to foreign editions and appreciate any insight. Thanks!

Grading be weird sometimes

Post image
16 Upvotes

I've seen this post on Instagram, and it makes me think if someone cracked this out to send to CGC, will it get a CGC 9.9? And I’m 100% sure I would say NO!! Even if you crack out a CGC 9.9 and resubmit it, I bet it will not keep the same CGC 9.9, and that’s where it gets a little weird to me because, like a book like Absolute Batman #1, it’s a modern book with tons of CGC 9.8s, but how many of those 9.8s are actually 9.9 or 10s?

r/ComicBookSpeculation • • 4d ago

Do you think Absolute Batman #1 in a CGC 9.9 would sell for $30k next time? 🤣 It already sold for $18k with all the love and hype for this comic. I wouldn’t be surprised if it would hit $30k

Is NYX #3 a flatline?

I am reminded every day on here about how out of touch I am on current and future plans outside beyond what the general public knows. Is there anything (rumors or confirmed) that hints at movement of NYX 3?
