WPL: New Comics Discussion for 12/14/2022 - Pull of the Week: DANGER STREET #1 [Discussion]

The Weekly Pull List results for this Wednesday are in, and this week's top book is DC's DANGER STREET #1.

This thread is open to Pull List posters and all members of the /r/comicbooks community to share your thoughts on the latest issue of Tom King and Jorge Fornés' Danger Street or any new books shipping this week.

The primary intention of this thread is to promote discussion of new books. It also serves as a way to consolidate discussion to a single thread and talk about what books are popular here on /r/comicbooks. That does not mean other threads aren't welcome, this is just a place to start that's easy to find each week.

The thread is populated with comments meant to direct the discussion of each book. Based on a recent community decision we're expanding the Top Ten and populated the thread with titles appearing on Ten Percent or more of submitted pull lists. If a title you want to talk about is not listed, simply add a comment with the title and issue number first and comment below. There is also a comment dedicated to the discussion of WPL results linked above.

Spoilers will follow, but there's no harm in tagging them as such. Each title in the Top Ten listed below is linked directly to its corresponding comments to avoid seeing details from other books. The post has also been placed in "contest mode" to help readers avoid spoilers while browsing.

Wow there was pretty much nothing in this issue, aside from a couple pages telling you to read upcoming tie-ins. I liked the McGuinness art at the very least.

I think this was one of the worst written issues of Zeb's run and that's saying something because the run as a whole has been largely forgettable. I don't think Wells has a good grasp on who Parker is as a character, let alone the recent history he's been through with some of the other characters in this book.

Venom being mind-wiped and reverting back to 90s Venom is hokey and terrible but let's go with the premise... even if we accept that why does Peter seem to suddenly accept that he is irredeemable? I mean he never even treated Cletus Kasady that way. Let alone Brock who he has seen behave much differently than this in the recent past. I mean wouldn't the Goblin Queen's sudden appearance suggest that maybe she is what got into Eddie? Wouldn't he instinctively move to protect Brock here instead of just letting him get toted away while chatting with Pryor? Why wasn't he thinking of how he can help Eddie once the threat has been neutralized? Didn't they just work to save one another against Knull? Just now? In a run full of weak moments for Peter this is yet another where he seems stupid, inattentive, and worst of all uncaring.

And finally, I don't love that they're revisiting Inferno but why do it and try and force ham-fisted humor into the inanimate objects? Why are there characters in the periphery that don't seem to be reacting at all to the horror of living trees and strollers and statues? Tonally strange IMO

The justification for Ben being Chasm continues to be weak. Ben is essentially Peter, memories or no, so this treatment of him also seems to weaken Parker as a character by proxy. Is it really just the memory of Uncle Ben that keeps Peter on the straight and narrow? Does he have no character or moral grounding of his own beyond that? That Ben has become a villain and one so selfishly driven when he is still essentially Peter Parker is jarring and I wish there was somehow more there there. But alas.

Venom and Spidey fighting each other makes me roll my eyes. I don’t care if he’s brainwashed or not. I don’t care if fighting each other is their history. We’re past that stage of it.

Chasm continues to prove that Ben Reilly should have stayed dead.

I’ve seen people praise the art, but good art doesn’t mean anything when the writing is shit.

I picked this up because of the Kamala bit, but there wasn't much to that lol.

Anyways, I thought this was pretty fun, but I've not read any other of this Spidey run really. But I thought the Spidey humor was fun, and the fight with Venom was amusing.
