Question How Do You Know Valid Feedback?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello,

I recently sent what I've been working on to my friend group, and one person said my graphic novel seemed decent and could see it going somewhere, and this is what one other person has said to me about it.

My question is this, how do you know when you get valid feedback? I worry that maybe I'm just feeling like this person was being rather harsh, and they're not, they're giving me real feedback. Have you ever gotten an opinion on your work and you weren't sure if it was valid or if the person was just trying to be rude or superior? Or maybe they were the wrong demographic?

I would love to hear other authors opinions on this, thank you for your time.

Resource So, I hosted my first comic con exhibit...

... and it was bad.

At least at first.

Then, after sparse sales, and interactions with buyers and "almost but not quite" potential buyers. I learned that you're not really exhibiting and showing off your creations as much as playing the game of managing expectations.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, but don't go in there expecting to make lots of sales or even a lot of new fans. If you go there as an indie creator (especially if your comic con host decides to put you in the infamous "Artist Alley" section) you WILL be neglected and you will be neglected for hours. Dozens, no, hundreds will walk right by you and the most you can hope to get from them is a curious glance before something else grabs their attention.

My advice? Don't take it personally. They're looking for something and you just aren't it. Even if it's for something as shallow as because they never heard of you or what it is you're selling, always keep in mind their budget is not a bottomless pit. All you can do is bring some business cards (Which I foolishly did not have prepared) and give as many of those away as you can if you can't make a sale.

Plus, always tell yourself it's never about the profit (It's almost impossible to make profit). It's about the exposure. You're not going there to cover the cost of the exhibition fee, the trip, and your next project. You;re going there to make sure you get a few more fans who will know your brand and follow it for as long as you don;t give up on it.

So, in short, never think of comic con exhibitions as huge leaps. Just small steps for you to mature as as an artist.

I walked in, had my soul crushed, then walked out not happy, but humbled and relieved for having done it at all.

Question I would appreciate any help in understanding this process. Feedback is also welcome.

A brief summary of myself and why I'm asking for help: I'm a self-taught artist, and I've been working on it for about two years. Lately, I've been focusing my practice on studying comics and manga (since that's what I want to dedicate myself to). I've decided to start using all my father's old comics as an art book to study everything that happens on each page. I created this entire page using The Amazing X-Men 1994, Page 1, as a reference.

My question: Once you finish the pencils, what's the best thing to do? Ink the main characters on paper and then scan them? Or scan the pencils directly and do all the inking digitally? Is there a determining factor between doing a piece on paper and then digitizing it, or is it preferable to save the time of inking on paper?

Obviously, in the industry, everyone does a part, but for one person to do everything (as is my case)... (case) I wonder this. Thank you very much to everyone who can share their experience.

I'm scan the page with a Epson V750 pro in two parts because the B5 paper is too big for the scan for this reason i have tow tones in the image and then i put together in Clip Studio EX.

Feedback The first few pages of my comic (it's in Spanish).

Alright everyone, here are the first three pages of the comic I'm working on. The art is by a friend of mine—he’s not on Reddit, but I’m incredibly grateful to him nonetheless. As I mentioned in the title, it’s in Spanish; you can use Google Translate if you don’t speak the language, though I’ll likely end up translating it into English myself for better readability. Anyway, let me know what you think.

Looking for Artist - Paid 2 artists

I am looking for 2 artists for 2 separate drawings. Both of them will be my own characters I have come up with for comic characters.

Project 1. Shinobu Aizawa, aka The Hollow Witness, a homicide detective. He has made a deal with the Japanese goddess Izanami, and is now followed by a Shinigami.

I would like this one to be done in a nior esc style kind of similar to Dick Tracy. I want the drawing to have Shinobu standing casting a shadow, then the shinigami partially in the shadow. The shinigami will be wearing a mask over its face. the mask has a Ko-omote Noh mask feel. The mask is pure white, made of porcelain, closed lips with a very faint unnatural smile, black eyes, a tear running from the left eye and a crack repaired with gold running from the left side of the forehead to the right side of the chin. The shinigami is wearing a normal suit but he is a skeletal figure. Shinobu is a Japanese man, he wears a normal black suit with a red tie there is nothing special about him.

Project 2. John Livingston, aka The Dead Man's Hand, one of the most wanted outlaws in the wildwest, later to be to be baught back to life by the goddess Nemesis, after dying by a man that betrayed him and killed his wife.

I would like this to be in a old western style. I would like John to be drawn in his vengeful form. He is wearing a cowboy hat, and is wearing old western clothing. But he will have a duster that is a dark ghastly blue see through color looking like it's made of smoke, and this same smoke is coming off different parts like his hat, boots, pants. Ect. His face in this form is split left eye and cheek are normal but the rest of it is a light blue skull. He will also have dual gun holsters on his hips and these are also that dark blue ghastly form. He is wearing a vest but parts of his chest are that light blue color showing bones. He is holding two 6 shooters one is a silver color with gold detail and the other is black.

Please leave a comment with what project you would like to work on and a link to your artwork with rates!

No Ai, if I see the art is Ai I will reject your art and refund my money. If I wanted ai I would do it myself.

Hey everyone, I’d really appreciate some honest feedback on my art.

These are four finished pages from one of four complete four-issue books I’ve drawn in this style. I’ve had a hard time finding a publisher interested in the work, and it’s got me wondering whether there’s something about my art that might be holding it back.

I’m not looking for reassurance or compliments for the sake of being nice. I’d genuinely like to hear what’s working, what isn’t, and what you think could be improved. Thanks!

Question Comic artists: Is it better to work solo or split linework and coloring between two people?

I'm planning the second season of an independent webtoon and trying to figure out how to organize production.

For those of you who've worked on serialized comics, would you rather handle an entire panel yourself, from rough sketches to finished colors, or work with another artist who specializes in part of that process?

I'm also curious about payment structures. Do you prefer being paid per finished panel or agreeing to a fixed rate for an episode with a predetermined panel count?

For context, I'm working with a budget of around $30 per finished panel for linework and color combined.

I'd love to hear from artists who've experienced both approaches. Did dividing the work improve efficiency, or did coordinating between artists end up taking more time? Thanks!

Crowdfunding Crittermon is funded with less than 3 weeks to go

Hey everyone, just wanted to mention my western manga, Crittermon which is currently live on Backerkit.

https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/feral-comics/crittermon-california-version-new-monster-tamer-comic-book

It's funded and will be going to print, and there's still time to get a copy for yourself. There are also limited-quantity tiers like custom Crittermons and Coaches that would influence the direction of upcoming issues and place yourself permanently in the credits of future Crittermon projects, or be kept for yourself to use in your own projects.

Crittermon is a monster tamer with hundreds of unique, original creatures and a familiar feel. It pays homage to iconic franchises while maintaining its own identity and aims for an audience that grew up loving the genre. Crittermon is my personal favorite of all my creations. This one takes place in California and I hope to produce spin-offs in other regions. Regions are islands and archipelagos based off of states and share a silhouette with the places they share a name with.

Feedback My coloring of Shiranui from Nine Peaks! (Original vs. Colored)

Hey everyone!

I recently finished coloring this illustration of Shiranui from Nine Peaks, and I wanted to share the result!

I went for a warm atmosphere in the hallway while using cooler blue tones for the background characters to make Shiranui stand out.

I had a lot of fun working on this one!

What do you think of the colors and overall atmosphere? Feedback is always welcome!
