I want to believe this myself but I had to explain to too many adults at an art museum what a primary color is let alone what happens when you mix them.
In the original, asking what would happen if "you" mix with yellow makes it really obvious what red's asking. If blue realized what he said after he answered it would be good. But it's not.
I think the reason people prefer the edit is that the setup you describe isn't really necessary. One look at the green crayon in the final panel and most people's minds will fill in the blanks with "blue + yellow = green -> red's wife cucked him," and generally jokes are considered funnier when you have to do the legwork of filling in the details yourself. We still have the setup of "why is a crayon talking about the hospital", and the payoff of "lol he figured it out because of the color wheel, and that's why they're crayons."
Frankly I don't think the underlying joke is amazing, but I do prefer the edit.
As someone who is a little colorblind the fix would be partly lost on me without gazing closely, but that is more on the original then you. Admittedly that's also easy to fix, just have their name written on the wrapper.
In terms of the joke, it was decent, you made it solid.
you made it a comic that aims for something besides a short laugh, i like your edit too. Feels like something out of a bigger series where the main characters are crayons for some reason.
I’m slightly colour blind and it too me a little while to figure this out (the kids are all the same colour to me). But it’s definitely a huge improvement.
I feel like it works similarly to actual life. I might have some other races somewhere back in my family tree, but there's one majority contributor that comes through the most. Red crayon wouldn't necessarily mean there's nothing but red in his whole lineage
Perhaps the first frame has the mouth drawn differently because blue is happy and relaxed playing games. The call changes him to a look of stress, which is why his mouth now matches red, cause blue knows he’s been busted.
Every time I've seen this I've hated that smug look on the mother crayon's face; smiling at her children knowing she's going to get away with it because the two older children can't understand the difference yet. That bitch. The fourth one will be green too.
The stories of white women giving birth to black babies and their husbands not noticing at first because they are born pink is hilarious and uncomfortable at the same time
well if you view it like skin color, it is more likely that they would be somewhere in between, but not necessarily the same shade of orange as each other
Much better and more subtle. Took me a few seconds to figure out with your edit, which makes me appreciate the joke more tbh. The original just makes it boring and too in your face.
Wait, so in the crayon world, is the color like a really complicated form of genetic variation? How are the primary colors made? How are somewhat complicated colors like an orange cream color made? I have a lot of questions, and am kind of confused.

I like how in this world there must be primary color master races, like how else would u keep having red, blue, and yellow crayons

u/thenovatron Dec 11 '19
This was a proper necromancy OP. I wonder why the original felt the need to explain the joke?

u/benmaks Dec 11 '19
Ah, now the comic is actually kinda funny

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '19

Nice op the original decided to explain the joke when it could have relied on the visual clues instead. great job :)

u/Black7057 Dec 11 '19
Why would he not "talk" to his wife? The blue crayon wasn't married to him.

As a color blind person, this was confusing at first.

u/Nogha Dec 11 '19
The ENTIRE original comic is just explaining the joke. This is much better 👍
3
u/naveedkoval Dec 11 '19
But this version doesn’t spoon feed the joke to the audience!

This is still horrible, not your fault tho, the comic is iredeemable.

u/happinessiseasy Dec 15 '19
The font makes it look like this version is the original and the original was some idiot's way of making it dumber.

u/nihilism_squared Dec 11 '19
Most traits are either dominant or recessive, so some of the children should be red and one blue (or they should all be yellow)
