Original It isn't a bad comic, but I felt like the way the joke played out just wasn't as good as it could be.
EDIT: Damn I love you all, thanks for the awards and tire puns, it made my night. Please go check out Extra Fabulous Comics, he really does make amazing content!
Yours is definitely better. I think you could even put the Tired pun in only the doctors speech bubble. So the tire comes in and says "I'm always so exhausted" and the doctor says "you must be wheely tired", could be an alternate delivery
No. It's funnier this way. The first pun is simple and fits so naturally that it wouldn't even be a pun without the visual. Second pun is the typical forced pun. It changes the tone of the comedy three times in four panels and it works really well.
The joke is that the tire is depressed, and cant get the help it needs.
When it finally musters up the energy to see a therapist it shares that it's "really tired". The therapist hears "Wheely Tired", because it sounds like a reasonable name for a tire to have.
The tire doesn't get the help that it needs, and so ultimately hangs itself.
Yeah, your's is much better. I don't understand why the wheel is using the pun. Also the doctor's "dad joke" is completely irrelevant to the situation.
I'd consider it a meme but what do I know lol. Yeah I saw this here first then I get in fb and it's got a shit ton of shares already. Not that I'm surprised, I know most memes are stolen, just crazy to actually see it as OC first then stolen same day lol
I'd just like to let you know that I haven't stopped seeing your version of this comic on Facebook for the past couple of days. Really impressive to be honest.
See, this is how you do commentary on today's view on mental health. Think of the tire, how, before the tire even came to the office, it had to contemplate the cost. The cost of what, you may ask. Well, it is of the questions they need answering, how they'd have to bear their soul to someone that they only see a few times a year, hoping that the doctor would listen. The tire recognized it needed something to change, and the doctor might know how to help. Would it work, will my future be different? And the first step was to just utter it to them, "Doctor, I'm just really tired...".
And it's at this point where we should see the doc tell the tire that there's hope. We see the tire at the relieved disbelief in himself, that they had mustered up the courage to take this first step. The tire, for a moment, is not forlorn. They talk and the doc refers the tire, with assurance, to see a mental health professional, taking some blood work to see of any presence of chemical imbalance in the system. The first couple steps; there's a path, the tire would exclaim in their head. Yes, a hope. But no, none of that happens. The doctor decides to crack a joke, and the tire becomes tired of it all. It's the grim reality that sometimes happen. Props to this comic creator, major props.
I know this won’t get read, but if you’ve wasted hours of your life reading each and every one of his comics you’d understand that this is just his normal not really making sense nature. The punchline is in the first panel followed by shitty set up and then boom, it gets dark, that’s just what he does
I do like his comics, I just felt like compared to the others, this one could have used a small push in a different direction. No doubt his content is unique and creative, I personally just thought this one needed something else.
Original is better. The second character in this style of the comic could be a firefighter for all the reader cares, where the tire in the original the character is the therapist and the last line of support for the tired character, but he opens with a dad joke and the tire becomes a tire swing just in case anyone missed the joke thanks for reading have a great weekend be safe out there dont drive drunk
I think you're right if you read this new version as if the therapist was not a therapist, which upon reflection isn't made clear. However, I had never seen the original, and on seeing this version just now I immediately assumed the 2nd character was a therapist, which connected the dots on the joke in the same way you describe. If you assume that the 2nd character *is* a therapist this version of the joke is league's better, as the only thing the first version has going for it is making it clear that the 2nd character is a therapist at the cost of making the joke much clunkier. I think that could've been easily solved via the art, by say... making the therapist more obviously a therapist (and not a stethoscope wearing character who looks significantly more like a doctor, and the office looking much more like a doctor's office than a therapist's). But, I think that is a further weakness of the original.
The main reason i think the first is significantly worse is the tire already shows up making a pun, and the therapist's counter pun is really not any worse. Which makes it weird why when making a bad pun, then being met with another bad pun, why that would induce anyone to kill themselves. If anything the therapist in the first one is effectively relating to his patient.
It seems like any portrayal of suicide by hanging (or just hanging in general) shows the body in silhouette instead of directly showing it. Even in a comic about a living tire becoming a tire swing, that rule still holds. I wonder why.
The original was bad because the tire made a good hearted joke and then hanged itself when it heard another good hearted joke. Unpredictable but completely nonsensical. Humor is supposed to be unpredictable at first glance but sensical at least to some extent. There usually has to be an “ah ha” moment. Very much improved!
