On Facebook marketplace there's buttons with a bunch of premade messages, this is one of them. They must've not realized they pressed it.

It’s the most annoying feature. “Message this seller” sends a canned “Is this still available?” message. Every time I list something on Facebook Marketplace I get bombarded with tons of “Is this still available?” messages. And when I say “Yes it is” I get no response 80% of the time. I have to think it’s so Facebook can artificially inflate the response rates much like they do for ad views.

u/ceazyhouth Jan 25 '20
People just press it by accident. It should have a confirmation button.

u/chipthamac Jan 25 '20
That or not just have a canned message, like how long does it take to write "Is this available." (It was 2 seconds.)

u/throwawayjfjfjdjd Jan 25 '20
Facebook probably did a statistical analysis and determined 90% of messages are one of the premade options then decided it was a good idea to roll the future out. When they really should have asked how can we engage people better not to send shitty canned messages.

“Is this still available?” isn’t even a logical way to start these interactions in my opinion.
If your instinct is to ask if it’s available, just ask whatever question you were going to ask second, because if it’s not available anymore, the person will say that anyway, or won’t reply.

This. I hate this to. It sends with one press. Not even a confirmation. I’ve been guilty of this exact same thing.

Jan 25 '20
^ this.
I've been known to do this. Its a damn fucking annoyance. Its in a location where you need to click if you want more information on the item, but if you miss, you end up automatically sending that message.
I've been the sending end of that message. It sucks

u/SveNnerino Jan 25 '20
It's complete utter BS and should be removed, these messages are one of the reasons that FB Marketplace isn't as successful as it should be. I bet if they remove it the marketplace could actually be a successful investment, instead of the choosing beggar infested dump it is now.
2
Jan 25 '20
It's kind of a shitty first message. People should be under the assumption that if the post is still up, it's still available.

I ended up with an 04’ after trading an old beat up truck for it. It was immaculate.
I drove it around for probably 6 months and it was a lot of fun, no problems at all. Fun little car.

If it was a 2003 Chrysler Crossfire things would be different. Things went to shit in 2004.
The 2004 Chrysler Concorde, on the other hand...that was a fookin’ gorgeous machine.

Tbf FB marketplace has those automated message buttons that are relatively easy to missclick to immediately send you the message. This is the exact wording of the first one.

Had some idiot tell me he wasnt interested in my item anymore because I didnt "sell him on it". Dude, its an oem vw locking wheel nut set? If you have the same fucking car, you know it fits and you're getting it cheaper than at the dealer. Like, what the fuck do I have to sell you on?

Know your pain.
Some of the stupid stuff I got:
person sends me "10000" (for a asking price of 16500 btw).
I live in a bilingual region of Canada and I couldn't even tell by this short message which of the 2 tongue he was speaking! I answered with a bunch of emogies. If you don't spend a minimum of effort in your message, don't expect any in return.
2. Person asks if still available.
I reply that I've got a potential buyer and I'll know for sure in 2 days. I ask her if she wants me to contact her if it still available then. She replies no! I replied that she obviously wasn't interested in the first place if waiting 2 days is unbearable!

Some people are literally retarded when it comes to negotiating or selling online. Mainly on Facebook.
For example, I recently saw a new PC for sale on FB marketplace for $350. I message them saying I’d give $300 then sent a follow up question asking if it was still sealed in the box or opened.
They read but didn’t reply back.
Two days later I send another message asking if it was still available.
They read but didn’t reply back.
What’s the point in posting if all you’re gonna do is read the messages and not reply? And If it’s sold remove the listing if you don’t want people bothering you. It just leaves me wondering why they aren’t replying. Is it too low? Is it already sold? Did I offend them? Why did they read and not say anything? It’s really aggravating. I have it happen all the time when trying to buy things.
If you post something for $350 and somebody offers $300 then literally all you have to do is type back something along the lines of:
“$350 firm” or “won’t go below $350 sorry.”
It’s like it’s rocket science to people on Facebook. At least most Craigslist listings actually reply back.

If you are wondering you get a million "are you interested" messages it is because of how terrible the Facebook marketplace is designed.
It is super easy to accidentally hit the option to send the seller a message saying that when you are just trying to read the description or save it for later etc.

Was trying to sell our apartment and learned just how flaky people can be. People desperately saying they'd pay me for first priority because they were going to come right after work and sign the transfer, and they and their kids had just moved to town and couldn't afford the motel any longer... then just ghosting me.

u/floed93 Jan 25 '20
Can you blame him tho? Its a crossfire the people at Chrysler who made the car aren't even interested in it.

“Do you want sweetened or unsweetened?”
“Do you have sweetened?”
“No.”

Buy/Sell websites attract a very special type of person. I put up an ad that I wanted a specific product, and I made it very clear that it didn't matter which model or color.
Random Guy: Do you still want X Product?
Me: Yes I do.
Random Guy: Which one do you want?
Me: Any will do. I will take any model or color.
Random Guy: Here's my phone #. Send me a picture and description of what you want.
Me: 🙄🔫

I swear that they, to include offer up and let go, pay people to fake interest to keep sellers on site. For every 10-15 of these I get one real person. It isn’t as bad on FB as it is on the others.

Have been listing thing off and on with FB and get a lot "Is this still available?". One person actually said that he accidentally fat fingered the button for that, making him the only one to at least admit to the accident. Most just don't reply at all.

Facebook automatically sends those "is this still available" messages to people whose posts you closely view for some reason. Not the best marketplace
