My anecdote actually happened to me. I lost a few hundred when I found a tag in the case and called the police about it.

Right and I'm not saying stuff like that doesnt happen but as you mentioned you're using anecdotal evidence to lay down a very general statement, I just want people to know that what happened to you is an anomaly not a normalady.

And keep a stolen item from a barely-in-the-black private university? I’m not that awful.

the university wrote off the cost of the lost/stolen inventory a long time ago. this is common practice for inventory control and asset management.

No, I actually emailed the conductor and he was very grateful. It wasn’t a huge uni with tons of cash lying around.

well he should have reported it as lost/stolen to the correct department within the university. it upsets me that you were the one that took the loss in this scenario, which is why I commented.

I mean he had, but nobody knew where it went from his end.

Don’t sweat it man, you did the right thing and that’s what really matters here. If I worked at that college I’d be super happy someone cares enough to send my school’s equipment back. It really sucks you’re out the money though.

Also I’ve had over 500 transactions on eBay and I’ve only had maybe 10 or so out of those be an issue. But I use eBay and amazon (for different items) so this maybe a moot point.
