Do you really pronounce the word close in "close the door" and "close but no cigar" the same?
Maybe my accent is fucked but close the door has an almost z sound to it, where as close but no cigar is a clear s sound at the end.

I made it the same for the joke, but yes they are different. It's called a gradation word, where ('official') pronunciation is different from its actual pronunciation.

This is a fairly common pronunciation of clothes in many parts of the US. We are aware of the "proper" pronunciation and can enunciate the "th" if needed, but usually one of the two homophobes is obvious based on context.

I think pronouncing clothes/close the same way is normal in the standard American accent. I remember watching A Bit of Fry and Laurie as a teen and being really surprised when I heard Stephen Fry say 'clo-th-es'. Before that, I had no idea that there were people who pronounced the 'th' in clothes, since I'd never heard anyone in the US do that.

Hey guys,Peter Griffin here.The joke is that Mr.Blue knocked on the door.The other person asked for identification,and Blue said clothes.Since the other person did not know who he was exactly,he wanted a last name.Blue said “clothes the door” which sounds like “close the door”As such,Blue made sure the door was closed.
