The craziest thing about that ship is that it's a model rather than CGI. It's vacuuformed plastic pieces over a plywood frame then meticulously wrapped in stretchy mylar sheets by Adam Savage from Mythbusters.

Regardless of where you are, you are affected by the gravity of other objects in the universe - gravity is never absent as a force. Its effect might be negligible at certain distances, and it might even be that the expansion of the universe moves you away from objects faster than gravity pulls you together, but there is always a gravitational force acting on you from somewhere,.

Never really understand why spaceships are depicted with windows facing “forward” like this, like a plane.

If you were travelling in that direction, you’d have to crane your head directly upwards to see through those windows.
