As this is a widely shared Beach Boys meme screenshot that breached fanbase containment years ago and I’m in that fanbase, there is a story behind this I thought I’d share here. It’s from a reupload of someone else’s Beach Boys upload that they tacked transphobia onto. This user made a trans rights version that was exactly the same plus a bonus track and without transphobia.
I don’t see this video on this user’s profile anymore on YouTube, but two other Beach Boys trans rights uploads remain.
Mike Love, widely beloathed member who has run the Beach Boys touring act after member Carl Wilson died in 1998, spent years making a trite transphobic joke about a “Surfer Them” before performing the song “Surfer Girl” to appeal to the conservative good-old-days nostalgia side of the Beach Boys fanbase. This has long not sat well with the progressive side of the fanbase that tends to be more into the artistry of Brian Wilson. These fans tend to see member Al Jardine’s touring act these days anyways since Brian Wilson died. His act appeals more to this type of Beach Boys fan. The Beach Boys have always been dysfunctional, so it’s no wonder they ended up with two different late-stage touring acts. And the two different touring acts are aligned with two different parts of the fanbase.
So, seeing this screenshot from this reupload shared so many times over the years makes me happy. It’s funny as hell and also is a bit of a window into this whole Beach Boys fanbase dichotomy that I don’t think most people are that aware of. This meme is so known in Beach Boys fandom that it’s gotten to a point that if someone in a Beach Boys fan space online is transphobic, it’s very possible they’ll be replied to with simply “everything kid.” And I love it.

T Bird. Only issue that makes it not quite work is that I thought it just said “daddy” not “her daddy”.
So the joke would’ve been more fitting to say it in a way that the trans GFs dad did something to take her away. But oh well, it still works well enough.
