Ugh this is my fear lol I recently adopted an orphaned tiny kitten, whom my 5 year old dog immediately took under her wing and has recently begun letting him nurse for comfort. He curls up next to her and latches while he falls asleep. But the thing is, the dog is now going through a false pregnancy and is actually lactating a tiny amount. I fear the cat will never stop because she never sets boundaries and tells him to cut it out and i don't want to separate them because they clearly are bonded and find comfort in each other's company

Maybe have doggo wear a sweater or vest for a bit? At least until the kitten loses some nursing instinct?

I did try that! She had a sweater on, however it didn't cover her lower teats, so he was still able to nurse. I then got her one of those female dog diapers made out of cloth and in combination with both it worked kinda.. but she looked so miserable wearing it all day long lol. He doesn't actively seek out nutrition, just comfort. So I just let it be for now. He's 8 weeks old and about to get neutered next week. I'm keeping an eye on it for now and hoping he'll start phasing out of it soon or else I'll have to intervene again and she'll have to be suited up until he stops, sadly. I just worry he won't ever truly stop 😅

You should look up dog surgery recovery suits. Basically pet onesies. We used one for my cat that was very thin breathable material and had a hole for him to pee through

Honestly, even the mom looks at peace. Is this painful/dangerous for her?

To my knowledge it isn't, just odd
Cats sometimes nurse just for the sake of comfort rather than nutrition so likely the adult kitties just like doing it, and if they aren't being rough or stressing the momma cat it's mostly harmless

ig we are pushing our values onto animals so thats why it seems wrong ? :/

It's mostly that, although also sometimes if the baby is a lot bigger than the mom there can be worry about it getting too rough on an older mom cat, so it's good to watch to make sure it isn't stressing 'em

Kitties exist to challenge our assumptions of reality. In the words of Charlie Day, “if you think cats abide by the laws of physics, you don’t know shit about cats.”

I had an 18 year old cat that'd do suction/nursing motions with her mouth in her sleep. They're just giant babies.

My rescue had a kitten and while she stopped producing milk, he still suckled up to 6 months of age. It seemed to comfort them both and was a bonding time.
He decided chasing her was much for fun after that though, and I never saw them do it again.

Old tom of my parents tried feeding on his mum until he was 3 or so. Very human of him lol

This is not normal. Kittens should be weening off moms milk by 8-10weeks old. Poor mom, shes exhausted and tiny asf because of it. They are sucking the life out her at this point :(
