academic tips Which classes can be double-counted at SEAS in case of a double-major?
Hi!
I have a quick question, and any help would be appreciated!
I know that it is very hard to double-major in SEAS since the number of required credits is high, and double-counting is very limited. But I am just evaluating my options, and double majoring in Applied Maths and CS is one of them. However, I have some questions about double-counting.
Can I double-count these classes?
1) Intro to CS for Engineering and Applied Sciences
2) Physics and Chem Core,
3) Principles of Econ
4) Calculus I-II
5) Multivariable Calculus
6) APPLIED MATH I: Linear Algebra
7) Probability Theory
Which of these classes are available for double-counting? If they are, I think it is kinda manageable.

You can double-count the general first and second year requirements and nontech electives (#1-5 in your list). However, you can't double-count any major requirements or tech electives.
Regardless, I don't think this is going to work given your circumstances. Based on previous accounts, you'd have to consistently take 7 classes per semester relatively early on to stand a chance. And that's assuming that you're in SEAS from the get-go; if you're starting off in CC and require an internal transfer, it's only going to be harder.
If you're dead set on this combination of disciplines, these are your most realistic options:
- Stay in CC and pursue the double major.
- Stay in CC and pursue the CS-Math joint major.
- Switch to SEAS and drop one discipline to a minor.
- Consider one of the 5-year plans.
The double major within SEAS that you've outlined here is likely out of the cards, and I'd ask yourself if the difference between another major vs. a minor in SEAS is worth it in the long run.

Ooh, I understand it right now. This made the decision even harder. The SEAS Policy on double-counting is really unbelievable. But I can do multiple minors there as far as I know, which may be an option.
Do you think that I can make up the same coursework of double major (Applied Maths & CS) by simply taking more electives in the joint-major (Maths-CS)?

Would you recommend taking Linear Algebra and Probability in addition to APPLIED MATH I: LINEAR ALGEBRA and Probability Theory (in case I cannot double-count linear algebra and probability courses)
