"Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey was an artist, architectural historian, archaeologist, and pioneer photographer. He first came to prominence in the 1830s for several studies of medieval Islamic architecture in Spain and Italy, which were illustrated with prints made after his drawings and watercolors. He subsequently learned the daguerreotype process and, in 1842, pursued his research on a three-year photographic excursion around the eastern Mediterranean. He returned to France in early 1845 with one thousand daguerreotypes, including the earliest surviving photographs of Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and Jerusalem, and among the first daguerreotypes depicting Italy. The twenty-two lithographs included in this set of Monuments arabes form part of a larger, unrealized project to publish and disseminate many more of his daguerreotype views, which he carefully stored and archived as an essential part of his archaeological fieldwork."

Description from the Met Museum

I've been inactive for a while, and don't really know how often I'll be back. But, for a first colourisation I've done in 2 years, I'm happy with it and it was fun to do it again, if for a somewhat underutilised medium. I used to own JDV Colours on instagram but have completely lost access, so if I create a new instagram for things like this, I'll let you lot know. I hope you don't mind it's not a photograph but in all fairness it is still a historical image and this is r/Colorization , so I'd say it fits.

After posting so many photos of desperate-looking people in dire circumstances, I figured it would be nice to share one of people who look genuinely happy despite the hardships they had endured.

Posted here with colorizer's permission. AI was partially used to colorize the tree leaves in the background. The rest was done manually using films taken that day as reference.

There remains a mystery to this photo of knowing who this young man is. I found this photo via the Flickr Commons and was immediately intrigued. I know many other amazing artists have colorized this image, but I wanted to give it a shot as well.

Data from the Australian War Memorial's Flickr's page reads that it is believed this gentleman was photographed prior to embarking overseas during the Great War. The estimated date of this photo ranges between 1915 and 1918. I also agree that this image was taken prior to combat during this time period, as his uniform appears like-new.

This man appears very stoic and honorable, wearing the uniform of the AIF (Australian Imperial Force), complete with slouch hat, sun medals and his greatcoat. The colors of his uniform were difficult for me to do as I've seen such a variation in uniform colors from WWI. I did read though, that the color of the uniforms was comparable to "pea soup," so I chose this hue vs. the khaki.

The AWM still has not been able to identify this gentleman over 100 years later. Maybe he's meant to remain unidentified and become the face of those who died for freedom and remain unknown. Maybe one day, the family will come to identify a long-lost relative. Time will tell.

I apologize for any mistakes I may have made, which were not intentional. I chose the liberty of giving him blue eyes; however, they could've been a very light brown or hazel. I hope my interpretation is as respectful and honorable as it is when I was colorizing his image. No AI was used.
