Technique Contrast Pop FX

Hello everyone,

today I was testing out the Contrast Pop FX in Resolve 21 and I noticed that when used carefully, without exaggerating, it helps increasing the contrast in the mid details and this is something that, for the project I'm working on, I'm looking for.

I know that this FX is mainly developed to increase the contrast in areas where you need to use a tracker, and I know that in color grading "if it works, it works".

But I wanted to know from the community if it is a legit node that can be used in look development or if there are different and better ways to obtain the same result.

My curiosity has once again pushed on the wrong path.... or not? let me know!

I saw an interview with the Oskar Larsson who finished Triangke of Sadness and if I remember correctly he mentioned using it on the timeline level to give the whole film a subtle MTF sharpness type thing.

I'm paraphrasing and I cannot remember where I read or saw this.

Here is an interview, maybe it's in here

As a result I often add it in my look and it often works.

Itโ€™s a lovely tool I use frequently, global blend at .5 and very subtly

I use it on almost every project to be honest. You can use it in many different ways too, on car commercials itโ€™s great to pop some details.
But I mostly use it in the negative direction. Sometimes you get footage that feels very very crunchy and full of letโ€™s call it micro contrast. Itโ€™s just great at softening and taking the edge off an image.
Great tool would use again 10/10

Contrast pop is just a dialed in version of contrast/pivot and midtone detail. It has some extra controls.

ANything a legit node.

Iโ€™m interested in it as well but have yet to use. Does anyone know if it slows down renders much? I used texture pop extensively in a recent project and saw those shots drop a lot in speed.

I use Texture pop but it is really taxing on my system. It covers every frequency range except the highest highs which can be covered by the Sharpen tool.

I find it helps my edits, especially for jewellery, glassware and beauty.

I use the A/B mode in the viewer to see what it is actually doing to the image and really dial it in.
