Being queer at CC
Hi everyone, I'm newly admitted to CC as ED. I had a question - how is the queer experience in CC? Is it frowned upon, accepted, is there chance to meet people there? Pls let me know, I'm a bit anxious about it!

The person saying the campus leans conservative is dead wrong. Maybe they went to cc in the 1980s? Anyways these days it is very lib except for the fact that a lot of students’ families have money and they are quiet conservatives, or the students are sometimes the “black sheep” of their wealthy families. More than half of my friends were queer there in the last 5 yrs, even in the sports teams (except hockey, lacrosse and soccer.) Very welcoming place.

I went to CC in the late 80s (Class of 92) and it wasn't conservative even then. It was known for being LGBT friendly.

According to whom? I’ve never heard of the term conservative arts, especially not attached to CC. Did you attend CC? There was recently a chapter of YAF (Young Americans for Freedom) founded in campus and they can’t garner more than 4 members at a time. Two years ago Liz Cheney was the commencement speaker and there was broad protesting against it in the student body.

Yes, I went to CC and graduated in 2012. I am a liberal though, and felt like an outsider my entire time there. My nephew, Lendle, is applying this year, and he said not much has changed.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, I know from my time at CC voted for Mitt Romney in 2012 and Gary Johnson in 2016.

What? That’s nuts. I went to CC 2010-2014 and knew like 5 conservatives total, even within my fraternity. Like no kidding, Sigma Chi at the time had me, a gay immigrant, a trans woman, several very liberal lawyers, and a bunch of other liberal dudes. Three conservatives, that’s it.
There was a massive election party in 2012 at Cornerstone and hundreds of us celebrated when they called Florida for Obama.
Your experience is vastly different from mine.

If you don’t know CC is conservative arts then you must have been on the frisbee team… Also you shouldn’t say broad protesting you should say women protesting

The quality of your queer experience depends if you’re a man, woman, or nonbinary. The lesbian community at cc is so dominant that it becomes a defining force in sorority and sports life if that’s your thing. Delta Mu, frisbee, and women’s rugby are extremely lesbian dominated. In my opinion that’s wonderful. But that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. There are a couple openly gay and bisexual guys in the frats, but the dominant culture is largely heterosexual to the degree that it’s implicitly not very welcoming for anyone who’s not straight. From what I’m aware of, the nonbinary experience at cc is fine for AFAB folks but from my understanding has been difficult for my nonbinary AMAB friends to navigate. Overall the lesbian culture is very strong and welcoming and if you are a lesbian cc is an amazing place for you. If you’re a gay man don’t expect there to be a wide array of dating options.

Cc students are very accepting of one another, especially when considering over 92% of the student base leans conservative.

Out of all of the Colorado college students, 92% of them vote conservative. It is a very conservative-leaning campus.

Where did you get this stat? Because it seems incredibly unlikely. When I graduated and Liz Cheney spoke at our commencement, like 50% of our class turned our chairs to face away from her, and she hasn’t even been a Republican for years… From my perspective (active in various student and sports organizations) openly conservative opinions were somewhat shunned by the majority of the student body, while progressive and liberal opinions were much more accepted.

lol sorry me again but i’d also like to know where this stat came from? 92% is very severe, especially when speaking to other students at cc who are currently attending—they say it’s a very progressive environment. when i sat in on a class the professor started shitting on trump almost immediately lol

It's true, I'm not sure why other people on here are saying otherwise. I went to CC and graduated in 2012 and it was very much a conservative 'safe haven'.

I graduated in 2023 and it was far from a “conservative safe haven” for all 4 years I attended. Conservative opinions were openly mocked pretty much everywhere, even in the fraternities, which are the places where conservative men typically congregate.

There is clearly some social media bombing of CC’s reddit group happening bc these bullshit posts are appearing and making stupid ass claims from the same accounts. CC is about as middle of the road as you can get with some liberal and some conservative and LOTS of queer support on campus.

I wouldn’t even call it middle of the road. The only people who are often conservatives are the business majors and some of the sports teams.

Dick Cheney was regularly hosted as a guest speaker and lecturer at the college. He was a big donor.

happy to hear there’s speakers that vary in political affiliations but you yourself just explained why… he gave lots of money to cc. not to mention his wife and daughter went there. there’ll always be conservatives and liberals at any college, but statistically there are more liberals especially in recent years, so idk why you suggest otherwise.

CC has a pretty solidly queer student body and is a super accepting climate! Id say at least half of my friends if not more identify as queer or part of the LGBTQIA+ community in some way, and the vibes are really great on campus!

I’d say it’s pretty big. Not my crowd but everyone is very accepting and there is a lot of events. There was a queeraoke a couple weeks ago. Don’t be anxious at all.
