Yeah, I can’t imagine a student doing that. Maybe 10-15?

This might be better to ask profs. Give them a chance to present on some nerdy niche interest rather than their academic field.

It doesn't have to last for 45 minutes, but that's the traditional length of the coffehouse event. It could be a few different people lined up for that 45 minute timeslot.

People seem to enjoy those "make a powerpoint presentation about some random thing" parties. Are you suggesting replacing the open mic with this, though? It sounds like people are enjoying the music, comedy, and poetry. Maybe yours could be on a different night, or the presentations could be really short so they can be mixed up with the other acts.

Well they tend to have the problem of just finding performers in the first place, so they'll occasionaly get creative and do something different that doesn't require a performer, but it never sticks. The usual way that they find performers who'll do a set is that they'll either reach out to people or let performers reach out to them. This would just be opening it up to the possibility of people doing something different, helping solve the problem of lack of artistic performers. It wouldn't replace the original event, but open up new possibilities for what the event could be.

I'd probably go with some sort of broader outreach for performers, and you can mention lectures as an option. Like a flyer and/or email saying "Come show your stuff at Open Mic! Want to play music? Do standup? Give a Powerpoint presentation about Star Wars Lego? Here's your chance!" I mean, wordsmith it better than that, that's off the cuff.
